Fantasy Flight rules on unreleased products

By Ken at Sunrise, in X-Wing

I was told by someone that Fantasy Flight never makes rule decisions on unreleased products.

But in MJ's redding notes there are at least two rulings on the TIE Adv. Prototype

Did Fantasy Flight change their unwritten policy or have they often made rulings on products that are not released and I just missed it.

[Edit] to include the word 'Prototype' which was originally left out in error.

The tie advanced has existed since wave 1. The tie adv.(anced) prototype is a ship coming in wave 8 which has no official rulings yet.

Probably they got such a large amount of mails that they decided to aswer some of them

Sorry I should have said the post is about the TIE Adv. Prototype. Two rulings about that.

Fixed the original post.

We don't know. I know they've said in the past that they don't answer emails about unreleased products. But they answered questions about the Tie Adv. Prototype.

Without Frank saying why, we can only speculate...

One reason could be he was in the zone for answering rules questions, we got like 6 or so emails posted from him yesterday. So he didn't realize he was discussing an unreleased product.

Another reason could be that they don't discuss unreleased products because they're subject to change. But in the case of the TAP and x1 title, there was never anyway the answer would change so they decided to put it to rest.

I imagine that they've gotten a lot of emails about it, and seen all our debates about it here.

What rulings are these?

Cool, ta. An interesting subtlety with Omega Leader and HLC there.

Yeah, it sounds like Frank just got into the groove and answering a bunch of e-mails. They've even said that they have a few issues remembering what is released or not.

so should i ask him for a ruling on boba fett crew card to maybe get some fresh leaks out of him? that sounded weird... some... idea of what he does?

WOAH, the official ruling on R2-D6 is that if he gets discarded with Integrated Astromech, you still keep your Elite Pilot Talent upgrade! I was confident it'd go the other way, but I'm pretty ecstatic to see that I was wrong. Considering I've been looking to use Hobbie and "Blue Ace" with R2-D6, it's nice to know that once they're on the field he just exists to take a hit for them. Makes my "Blue Ace" w/R2-D6, Integrated Astromech, and Predator a little more potent.

However, shocked (and disappointed) that the Inq TIE cannot be docked on the Gozanti. Just... why? Why not? :(

So that you don't have two different rulings for the X1 title.

As for R2-D6, it was about an even split on which way it could go.

Quick someone email him about the tractor beam asteroid damage thing. Before he stops emailing about soon to release things.

I was in the camp that in Epic if you lost the slot you lost the upgrade so this would apply to R2-D6 as well.

Similar rules - opposite rulings.

Just... why? Why not? :(

Because it's not a Tie Advanced. Although why they don't errata it so you can put the Tie Advanced Prototype on it... That's another question.

I never got involved in that debate, but considering IG-2000 I would've thought you'd lose the elite talent. But I can see the distinction made between adding an icon to the card even if only virtually, vs allowing a ship to use your ability.

Oh yeah, Epic ships and IG both follow the same logic.

I can't remember the specific time, but I seem to recall that this happened once before, we got a ruling on unreleased stuff along with a big email dump about a bunch of different topics.

I think the reason the Advanced Prototype got a specific ruling early was because it came in the context of, "I have these questions about names." The original email was asking whether things that affect TIE Fighters (Youngster, Docking Clamps) would also affect the TIE/fo Fighter. Asking whether the TIE Adv. Prototype counts as a TIE Advanced for Docking Clamps and the x1 title was a natural follow-up.

Note that answers given before a product's release are subject to change.

Before Most Wanted came out there were questions about how using dials with a different appearance would work for a given ship. The early answer stated one thing the ACTUAL was the complete opposite (it was a yes/no question). This upset a lot of people because of that early answer but the only real reason to support that early answer is because it was what was given while there were far stronger reasons for the way the ruling actually came down.

Hopefully the TAP will get the ability to dock with the Gozanti after it's available to buy. And if they don't? The only place it will be enforced is at epic tournaments anyway. Casual play? Not so much.

IG is a different situation though, you don't actually lose any upgrade slots. The wording on the title says you havethe pilot ability of other friendly pilots with the title. Once the other ship dies, there's now no friendly ship with the title for you to share the ability with. Epic is a another story, where there are specific rules for how to handle crippled sections of multi-section ships (though at least is a precedent people coul dhave looked to for R2-D6)

Yeah, I 100% understand the TAP ruling. It's totally consistent with what they've previously said about names.

In my mind, the question is: why didn't they write the Docking Clamp card so as to allow the TAP to dock?

As I understand it, had the Docking Clamp been written:

You may attach 4 up to TIE fighters, TIE interceptors, TIE bombers, or TIE Adv to this ship. All attached ships must have the same ship type.

You would have been able to attach both the TAP and TIE Advanced. In my mind, that's the _better_ way to play. I'd love to know their reasoning for not allowing it.

True but in the Epic example you do actually loose the slots and at least thematically it makes sense to loose the upgrade as well.

Yeah, I'm thinking this will be one of those things where casual players will hopefully let it slide, especially since the Gozanti and the TAP are both from the same show and I'm pretty sure they've docked.

At least this way, we don't have to worry about seeing 6 TAPs with Accuracy Correctors across the table.

In my mind, the question is: why didn't they write the Docking Clamp card so as to allow the TAP to dock?

I don't get that either. The TAP is no better than any other ship for the points, so I don't see how it could be unbalanced.

The only thing I can think of... Is for some unknown reason they couldn't/didn't include it because it's not released yet. Makes little sense to me, but perhaps they have a policy or even some sort of contract thing that none of us know about. But that could mean then that Docking Clamps could be errata'ed to include the TAP after it's released.
