Using only the Force

By Necrovoker, in Star Wars: Force and Destiny RPG

Hey all!

I have a character concept for an upcoming Edge of the Empire game set in a post RotJ era, a character with no weapons, using only the Force, and more specifically Move, to fend off enemies. Now, for the year I GM'd Edge, none of my players invested in the Move force power, or any direct force powers in general, so I have no clue of its actual potential. Do you think it is possible for a character to use only the Force, with no lightsaber, no blaster, no nothing? Has anyone tried it?

P.S. I want to specify I don't plan on using the Force only in combat encounters, but all the time. I want to show that the character is one with the Force (or at the very least wants to be), and that he doesn't need (or want) anything more than that.

(A quick, friendly warning: if you build a character that's good at one thing only, you may get bored quickly.)

The Force is powerful but not particularly reliable (unless you're looking to go dark side) so you'd probably need to look at the specs that get your Force Rating up, quickly.

Start as Consular: Sage, then jump to Seer (from Mystic), perhaps.

Shroud would be useful (from Shadow in the Sentinel career) to keep your Force-use hidden.

Pretty much true with any one-trick pony build, no matter what system you're playing.

I am playing something similar for a PbP. She's a Togruta Seer who uses Bind in combat. I was able to hit the FR 3 mark using Knight-level XP. Of course, it was at the cost of extra skill ranks. But, that suited my character very well. She was naturally gifted, but never trained or had much in the way of worldly experience.

I've also learned that Bind is a great power. It doesn't have the damage the Move has, but it's very "controlly", and you can shut down minions completely (since they cannot willingly suffer strain).

It's a lot of fun, but as a Force power adept, be prepared to be tempted by the Dark Side on a regular basis. Far more than any other character.

A very valid point. The character I have in mind has other specialties (mainly survival expert and tracker), and the Force is there to support his main focus, and to be used as a weapon in combat. With that in mind I think things should be fine. After all, the Force is more fun and versatile than any blaster weapon!

Kaosoe, I'm glad to hear you had a good experience with a similar concept. I won't be starting at knight level but xp comes pretty fast in this game so I'm not worried. I did notice in my test runs that I had to use the Dark Side in a few occasions (especially with a Force Rating of 1), which weighted on my Strain Threshold, but that's the nature of the Force!

The Enhance Force Power with the Middle column of Control upgrades would be a fantastic way for your character to use the Force in combat, especially the Brawl upgrade. It really evokes the essence of a classic Monk type character using the force to enhance their body to overcome opponents. It would also be super helpful for the Survival part of your build.

The Seek Force Power would also be great, particularly when you have a FR of 3 so you can commit to gain enormous amounts of Pierce (I'm assuming a tracking character will have high Cunning and Perception).

Then of course there is the Sense Force Power, which represents using the Force to predict your opponents moves. With all the control upgrades you can commit 1 Force Die to upgrade your attack twice every round, combined with the Enhance Force Power it can make Brawl a monster.

And if you take the Warden Spec from Keeping the peace. Lots of cool brawn type stuff in there.

I had a similar concept back in Saga edition, and the we changed to EotE. It was a little tricky making the transition.

All the above warnings apply. But here's how you do it.

Get to FR 3 ASAP via Consular - Sage (135 XP) or Mystic - Seer (140 XP).

FR 3 is the bare minimum to begin using Move reliably, without resorting to flipping black pips.

Buy Move, Control Hurl and at least 1 rank of Strength and Range (35 XP total).

The more Strength and Range upgrades you buy, the more cost effective your pips will be. If you get extra pips to use, you can always activate the upgrades multiple times.

Eventually you'll want all the Control upgrades, and some Magnitude upgrades.

Don't forget to buy up your Will and Discipline for the attack roll.

Seer is awesome. It adds other little tricks to your force powers. Push as a move one per session? Awesome!

I love Seer too, some very cool talents in there.

Sage is okay, and it's the same career as Niman, which is likely to be your lightsaber form of choice, if you're ever going to get one with this build.

Yeah, Sage is a bit of a more balanced tree for smart scholar characters. If your rocking a decent int it might be more desirable to take out that to round out talking and academic skills. Not quite as explosive as Seer in terms of force tricks, but to project a irresistible presence and provide a link between Intellect and presence? None do it better then Sage in comparison, and I can't think of many classes that actually link presence and intel in the same way.

Advocate. but thats not a Force tree

Thanks for all the input guys. I was actually gonna start as a Seer, like you all suggested. Not only does it offer 2 Force Rating upgrades, but it also gives some very interesting Force talents like The Force is my ally or Natural Mystic, but also things like uncanny reactions, sense danger, forager and expert tracker that all fit my character concept really well. With my starting xp, after investing in my attributes, I was able to get the basic move power, one range upgrade and the Hurl Control upgrade, so now I can throw glorious 5 Dam pebbles at minions. It's gonna take a minute but eventually I'll be pretty decent I think.

Is he a Pyke? ;)

Ahah! Still have to choose between a Pyke and a Kyuzo! I would prefer the Pyke but since the upcoming campaign is gonna focus on primeval worlds and the occasional backwater outpost, I don't know how the more urban inclined Pyke would fare.

Kyuzo's are cool. Check this out: starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Kyuzo. I wrote it myself, so I know it to be accurate.
