Female pilot cards - List, request and talk

By Blail Blerg, in X-Wing

I still say a Leia Organa pilot card for a Y-Wing (her ship of choice in the old Marvel comics) would be nice to see in a Rebel Veterans expansion.

Give her a useful ability, but not a particularly high pilot skill... She is, first and foremost, a politician after all.

Regardless, it would be great to get her in the mix alongside Luke, Han, Lando, Chewie, Wedge, etc.

We should call the TIE swarms with crack-shot the Patriarchy!

Nevermind that Howlrunner has been the boss of the TIE swarm since wave 1.

I don't give two figs about the pilots gender I go on pilot skill, ability and dial.

Forcing in more of anything be it aliens or genders won't alter that.

My goodness, it's such a good anological fit, and every post of yours brings the analogy closer and closer. Putting it briefly: Don't be so certain that your perspective is the sole source of validity - for you own sake, if not for that of others.

Except it really isn't. People need money to live. They need it to eat, stay warm, and a host of other things both absolutely and basically necessary for dignified life.

Media representation would give someone none of those things. In fact, complaining about such things is already a measure of decent means, because the truly destitute give no ***** about who appears in media. They are far too focused on figuring out how they are going to live.

On the other end, comparing lack of representation with things like starvation and living on the streets is in my mind a gross injustice to understanding what those things are like. Not seeing the kinds of people you would like in particular media is a far cry from suffering hunger and lack of shelter.

Now I do think FFG messed up by not putting pilot portraits on the named pilots. It would I think get across the real diversity of Star Wars a lot better. There are quite a few female pilots and a lot of interesting looking aliens. True half the Imperial faction would be the same helmet, maybe that's why they didn't, but still a waste.

Who cares about meatbags? I want more droids as pilots!

Yeah Darkark, those features you list are all disanalogies alright, but that's to be expected, right?. Without them it would be a claim of identity, not analogy. That would make it a tautology and thus as boring as mud (eg. "Batchelors are unmarried").

None of what you say changes the original criticism - that the rigid and self-congratulating perspective of a rich man who cannot see his privilege, and thus weighs himself the moral better of the poor man, is analogically similar to that of a white man who cannot see his culture reflecting himself back at him, and thus mocks those who feel alienated as in fact complaining about nothing.

And people constantly taught they are oppressed will see through that prism of duality, and fail to see when they have transformed to the oppressors.

What about the media reflects back upon the Serbian that fled the ethnic cleansing of his homeland?

He settles in the Jersey burroughs and must face the prospect of having his "advantages" checked by the American female, one of the most privileged classes to ever exist on the planet of the Earth, along with the self-misandrist jack booted thugs that believe these disingenuous assertions of white-male privilege.

When someone tells me that building a wall on the Mexican-American border is racist, when I ask what race is it racist against, they say Mexicans. That tells me a lot of how their mind works.

It's a bit of a tangent, but I've observed that children love playing "Chewie" and doing the C-3PO guessing game. Maybe we do need some Ewok gliders after all.

So, we need Kettch? Yub yub commander.

Clearly what we need is an A-wing Aces box that comes with two A-wings.

That'd allow adding:

Sila Kott - Battle of Endor

Shara Bey - Battle of Endor

Ahsoka Tano - Rebels, briefly seen flying an A-wing

If you don't mind delving into legends (and I don't):

Linna (last name unknown) - Part of Pash Crackens Ace Squadron. I do have a custom card for her but haven't managed to draw a very good A-wing yet to replace the current filler art.

To round that out add Edor Crespin (leader of the Sreaming Wookies Squadron) and Pash Cracken (leader of Ace Squadron) to get a solid line up of A-wing pilots. Plus other A-wing titles, modifications and upgrades, I may have gone off on a tangent here.

The only TIE Interceptor pilot I can think of is Erisi Dlarit from the Rogue Squadron books, but there isn't much to go on as to what pilot ability you'd give her.

Howzabout a crew card for Malla, and Lumpy and Itchy as T-70 X-wing pilots?

"This is a hell of a thread, what do you call it?"

"The Aristocrats!"

BECAUSE YOU'RE ACCUSTOMED TO YOUR IDENTITY BEING THE DEFAULT. Can you not fathom how that might be different if you were a member of a gender/race/sexuality that wasn't quite so spoiled for choice in terms of role models in films/comics/TV/whatever that looked like them?

That's the metaphor. Representation is money. You've been swimming in it so long you not only can't fathom how it might be scarce and precious to someone else, you've actually got the nerve to lecture that person about how it shouldn't ****ing matter to them.

Sorry everyone. That's me done for the thread.

Actually, I can't fathom the concept of being so dependent on an imaginary character as a "role model," based solely on their race or sex, particularly to the point that you would avoid a game or movie which lacks such a character. I don't feel catered to in most forms of media, nor do I feel any need to be catered to - that's what I meant when I said "grow up." The characters of Star Wars are great because of what they did, not because of their skin color or their sex. I don't feel any need to "identify" with them - I just sit back and enjoy the fantasy for what it is. My point is that I don't need someone to look like me to identify with them - why do you? I've played many games with female leads, and I didn't sit there thinking "Wow! This game needs more males!"

If you feel "represented" by tiny plastic TIE fighters or X-Wings, then I will leave you to that - whatever floats your boat.

Jibberish.

Half the fun of this game is that it is set in a fantasy setting; the lore, the fluff, the fun of it is as important as the little plastic ships we push around - whether we are children or adults. And for many people a feeling of empathy and association is as natural a part of that enjoyment as rolling the dice or opening the box on a new shiny. Natural, normal and fun!

If then a key demographic tells you they would enjoy the game more if they had more characters that they identified with, why not listen?

Strikes me as natural; nobody here is talking about quotas or Vader getting in touch with his inner interior designer. Just a few more female pilots to spread the joy to some new players - that simple!

More players means more fun for all of us surely.

Jibberish? Right back at'cha! The key question remains unanswered: Do you avoid movies or games because you feel you can't identify with the characters solely on the basis of sex? If so, that is not a normal, natural or fun mindset - it's a sign of over-politicizing everything with a rather sexist bent. It's the same thing as a guy saying "I can't identify with women, so I'm not going to see the new Ghostbusters movie - maybe if it had more men in it." That doesn't strike you as somewhat bizarre and ridiculous?

I have no problem if FFG decided to add more female pilots to curry favor with a rising "key demographic" (which doesn't actually exist as anything other than a small minority, and I suspect that the percentage of current female pilots far exceeds the percentage of female X-Wing players), but to claim that there need to be more female pilots because "representation" or "equality" is just silly and obnoxious PC garbage.

Or Tycho!

This thread is 100% gold

Tell the ladies Kath likes it in the rear arc. ;)

My custom painted Kath is off the chain. Favorite ship in the game and maybe pilot in the game. Very Very fun and deadly.

Yeah, remember how that movie came out with a black lead actor? It was called Space Battles, The Farce Wakes Up, or something. It totally bombed because the 680 million men in China had no interest seeing a film with a lead they couldn't identify with.

The fact remains there are 680 million men in china that aren't having their privileges checked!

When someone tells me that building a wall on the Mexican-American border is racist, when I ask what race is it racist against, they say Mexicans. That tells me a lot of how their mind works.

Really? All the arguments I've seen against that wall are based on the incredible cost of building it and the low odds it will actually be all that effective.

Everyone knows it does not make economic sense.

A lot of the reaction against it is emotional though.

And people constantly taught they are oppressed will see through that prism of duality, and fail to see when they have transformed to the oppressors.

Depends on country.

Western problems aren't as widespread outside.

If you don't support the theatrical-level hype on 'oppression" "offence" and all the self-inducing nerfcrap

People won't see the problem where it does not exist at all.

And people will be happy to see the world without the prism.

It's a bit of a tangent, but I've observed that children love playing "Chewie" and doing the C-3PO guessing game. And my littlest one always looks for the astromech cards I have equipped and says, "oh, that's R2-D2's friend!" The cute factor makes a great introductory point to catch them when they're young. Maybe we do need some Ewok gliders after all.

So, we need Kettch? Yub yub commander.

New Wedge Antilles alternative art card! I wonder how closely those are watched by Disney, that would be among the most amazing things in the game. Too bad it is legends now - we need a new book to pick that up!

Back to the OPs topic. My friend has a list for each faction he calls' "Girls Night Out". Though not competitive at World's level are still playable for casual combat. Maybe even for store tourney.

Care to elaborate on that list? Curious what's in there.

SW novels tend to be "not even mediocre"

to say it softly.

The whole plot revolves around mary sues, mostly from two soap opera-interwined family names

about refreshing the legends and bringing back things that are retconned now with the mouse trashing EU basically.

and in no world will we see a good SW novel without mary sues in it v_v

new books...

You know, I'm sure Mary Sues used to be a different thing - purely an attempt of a fan fic author to put themselves into their favourite fantasy.

If Twilight's sins aren't enough, it seems to have ruined that term as well... :(
