New to Armada...what add-ons would help?

By Kealios, in Star Wars: Armada

I missed the awesome sales at Cool Stuff, etc...but I went all in this past week any way.

Other than what comes from FFG, what add ons should I consider out there? Anything from Shapeways or Ebay that might considerably enhance my play experience?

I've got storage, and I've got my CorSec space mats. I like add ons, player aids, etc...anything you can recommend?

Here are the links to the models:

Ship Trees

Just make sure to get them in ultra or extreme detail or else they will be a bit grainy like my nebulon b's turned out. The corvettes turned out great though. Mel Miniatures (nebulon b link) has some awsome shapeways both for realistic and armada scale.

Also, these asteroids were fun to make: asteroids and here is the video (video not by me)

Never seen these. Those are gorgeous.

They are, but I think they look downright stupid when you the have an X-wing the size of a CR90.

They work if you take the models off squadrons and just use them as tokens, but IMO you are cutting your nose off to spite your face. I prefer just to swallow the scale issues with 'armada scale' and carry on.

I could see that, but I like to think of me as the commander looking down at a war room table watching the battle unfold. Therefore, the squadrons are unit representations like in the game "Empire at War" (otherwise each starfighter would be shorter than 1 mm each).

By the way Kealios, there are some great alternate armada cards throughout the forum, and this one comes to mind: custom cards

Ok, I love the to-scale CR90 as a squad of 3. I kinda wish FFG had done that in the first place.

Yeah, if there was an easier way to handle squadrons that only required them as a single good looking token it would have been sweet to have everything to scale.

I saw my first actual ship models in the FLGS yesterday. Holy crap, some of the capital ships are HUGE! As a veteran of models from Ground Zero Games for games like Full Thrust and Colonial Battlefleet, I was really saddened to see these in the silly giant scale of Spartan Games and their idiotic rulesets like Firestorm Armada.

Thanks for the links, all!

Star Wars ships are at a predetermined scale, FFG can't really do anything to select a smaller scale for everything that is consistent and looks good.

I love ship trays I have from Dragon's Lair Accessories, and there are other firms putting out similar products as well. If you've got a thing for keeping your stuff organized during play, trays with slots for all the cards and tokens can be worth the investment, particularly so if you attend events where you're required to move your fleet between tables.

I can recommend these as alternative fighters: They look great with enough detail considering the size, are tiny enough to sort of look realistic, and are large enough so that you can still paint them. http://www.shapeways.com/designer/j_roncho

If you're looking for moving in between tables. You should see the transport trays. Not just the ship docks.

A line laser. That makes it much easier to tell if something is in arc, or crosses a line.
