X wing repainting. Colour establishing.

By tsuruki, in X-Wing Off-Topic

I am working on Repainting some of my new models and before I start the process of figuring out the paint blend to achieve the same colouring as that of the base X wing and T-70 (The grey-brown hull) and the red on classic X wing, I had the genius though of asking here.

Has anyone already figured out the best mix of paints to use? I usually use Citadel paints but I have access to plenty others.

Cheers to anyone who has the answer.

I find the Vallejo color 'deck tan' is a match for the x wing hull color right out the bottle.

Foundry paints for me.

I cant remember the exact shade match for xwings but there is one.

They do about 130 colours with a 'light' and 'shade' version of each for easy highlights.

I tend to then mix foundry black with water about 50/50 for a wash that you then quickly wipe off with a kitchen towell

foundry paints here:

at a guess 8c or 9c would be about right

Thanks guys, ill check out the vallejo since its sold locally.

I'll warn you that vallejo is in my experinence very very 'dry' matt when applied and can rub off easily of you havtn primed the model really well. I always had to seal vallejo with matt varnish and its why i stopped using it.

It gave a lovely 'warm and soft' look to painting WWII woolen uniforms but i found it constantly wore off figures even through light play handling.

Im not a massive fan of vallejo personally

I haven't noticed the issue you describe( I don't doubt you have the issue, I just haven't noticed it yet)

But I will second the mention of using a dull cote type spray as a protective layer. I use it regardless to protect all my paintwork.
