Ship name rule applied to dials

By Rawling, in X-Wing Rules Questions

If I have my history down right, the ship-name rule was introduced so that Vader could equip the Advanced Targeting Computer.

Now, by email ruling, it has been generalized to apply to card effects as well as restrictions.

By this precedent, can we apply it to dials too? Can I fly my TIE F/O Fighter with a dial that is labelled TIE Fighter?

And if not... what dial do I use for this ship?

That's the problem with the rule.

I think most of us understand that you match the dial to the ship name, and it has to be an exact match. So TIE/fo Fighter != TIE Fighter when it comes to dials, even though it does when it comes to upgrades and other situations.

But as you point out, then the Tie Advanced x1 doesn't actually have a dial that works for it.

I'm starting to think the best thing they could of done is just FAQ it so the TAP can't take the x1 title instead of this mess of a rule they have now.

Saddly, this is another case of 'it works this way because we say so'.

Bonus question from another forum. (I don't want to start a second "Ship name rule applied to x" thread...)

In an Epic game, can I take 12 TIE Fighters and 12 TIE F/O Fighters? Or does the ship name rule stop this, because that means I have 24 TIE Fighters?

12 of each ship type

You can take 12 of each. The ship-name rule is only for the purposes of upgrades and such, not treating two different ships as the same ship for general rules purposes.

Can I take 12x TIE Advanced, plus Vader in his TIE Advanced x1?

Sigh... no, unless you want to be the annoying type of rules lawyer. Basically, Vader should never have been printed with "x1" in his ship title. For all intents and purposes, he should be treated as if his pilot card just says "TIE Advanced". Yes, I know there's nothing in the RAW that says so. I don't care. It's obvious what the intent is.

What they should do is officially errata vader's ship to not have the x1 and the corvettes to have the full name, then they can create a rule that will actually work.

Hmmm... creating a rule that works... there's a concept. ;)

Is TIE a ship type?

Is Twin Ion Engine Mk. II a ship-type only upgrade?

Because TIE Bomber, TIE Interceptor, TIE Advanced and TIE/fo Fighter all share the same TIE ship-type for docking clamps purposes, right?

No.

Docking Clamps can carry one of those 4 types, in up to a quantity of 4.

New player, just got the Tie Advanced. What does the x1 mean on Vader's card?

What does the x1 mean on Vader's card?

Semi-Serious answer... It means that when they first made the game, they didn't have things like titles and the rest in mind. So they added a bit of lore to the card. The ship Vader flew at the battle of Yavin was the x1 because it was a prototype.

More serious answer... It means nothing.

Ok. I'm gonna say anything I do with Vader piloting I get to do x1. Action x1, Number of dice x1, Number of Shields x1 etc... The gamut. I won't need any other ships then.

:D

So what ship do I use there isn't one listed (on any alt art pilot card) Go ahead rules lawyer tell me I can put a title on him.

Sorry Boba no Slave I title for you don't have a ship listed.

Sorry Boba no Slave I title for you don't have a ship listed.

You can give him the TIE/D title instead.

If you take all the letters in Boba Fett's pilot ability and unscramble them, you can spell out TIE Defender.

Using the same logic as that Frank guy's rulings about ship-type specific upgrade rule being applied in other circumstances. So feel free to throw an Ion cannon on him.

The alt art cards are just that: alternate art. The basic version of the card is the one you look to for rules interactions.

Please, everybody, I understand the rush you get from breaking something, and how it makes you feel smarter than "that Frank guy" (seriously?), but just, please, just give it a rest.

I get why people being precise with the rules helps us/them build a better ruleset that doesn't need constant specific and arbitrary clarifications, but some people just get so obnoxious when they think they've "outsmarted" the game designers.

It's too bad they didn't use the ship icons from the pilot cards and tiles on the dials and upgrades as well. Then, instead of worrying about which part of what name you have to match, you just match the silhouette.

No.

That's not how rules work.

Some people think that is how the rules work, and then they make crazy arguments for precedent!
