Epic Kit - How many small base ships should I plan for

By Ken at Sunrise, in X-Wing

Quick question for all you how play Epic.

What is the average number to slightly more small ships you'll see in a 400 point Epic game per side?

I'm guessing if you have 1 to 2 Huge ships on each side you'll seldom see more than 10 small ships per side or is that just too few?

2 each of A, B, and K with 4 of X-Wings without any options at all is 208 points. So if you added 2 more naked A and B that is 14 total bring you to 286 and that really doesn't leave much left for 2 Epic ships. Maybe a transport but not a transport/carrier and corvette.

I played an epic game last weekend, Raider and Assault Carrier vs CR-90, but the standard Epic game is 300 points...

The Imperial side (which I was playing) had 6 fighters. 4 with the Gonz and 2 bombers. The Reb's had 2 X-Wings, 2 Y-Wings, 2 A-Wings and a Z-95.

I'd guess that a typical Raider/CR-90 would eat up 120-140 points depending on how well it was kitted out. A GR-75 40-50 points and a Gonz 50-60 points.

I think it can vary quite a bit. When I played with the CR-90 in a 300 point game I was just barely able to fit 4Ys and 6Zs. If you play with the Transport instead, then you could easily fit several more ships in. In a 400 point game with only the Transport, I wouldn't be surprised to see 20 or more small ships; maybe even more for an Imperial who flies a Gozanti and lots of TFs.

How many ships do you normally field at 100 points?

Expect a Corvette to be around 125 points, a Transport to be around 40-50 points, and work from there.

Depending on what ships you take and how you outfit them, you could end up fielding anything from 6 to 16. Personally I prefer to take maybe one or two aces, then generics.

I think if you wanna do team Epic each player should field one Huge ship. The corvette players will have around 75 points to spend on escorts and the transport players will have closer to 150 points for fighters.

I suggest the corvette player field 4-6 cheaper ships and the transport player field a similar number more expensive ships. That way neither player is setting a dozen maneuver dials.

Try to build squads with same pilot skill but don't have all your ships at same pilot skill. Mid-PS generics have a solid place in Epic where you can PS kill ships pretty regularly.

I heard that Aces and extra upgrades really slows down the game. A few battle reports talk about only getting through one or two turns due to going over all the actions available though upgrades. But even so Aces would reduce my total count.

Multiples of identical ships, same Pilot Skill (as above), same options etc really helps Epic a lot. Even if I had 4 each B, A and X Wings that's 12 ships, then just a few Pilot Skills above the base adds points quickly.

I'm trying to assemble my kit to have enough stuff for 90% of the games. Clearly someone can always want more but...

I was thinking if I carried 25 small bases for a total of 25 small ships or about 12 on each side that should handle it.

If you are going to fly 2 huge ships per side, 25 total small ship bases should work. Personally, I don't like flying large base ships in Epic because it the scale difference is pretty jarring. X-wings next to the GR-75 look a little odd. Decimator or Falcon just looks wrong.

Not many people could do this, because OMG it would be expensive, but just for scope... and since you are already in Custom land with 400 Points, I am going to ignore the unique ship rule limit. With a 148 Point Raider, you could field 21 Academy Pilots. That would at least be your top number... so... you should be safe with 12-15 per side. If you are following Epic Tourney guidelines, you can only have 12 of any one basic ship (read: TIE Fighter).

So let's see how many following Epic rules and 400 points:

Raider (148 / 3)

12 TIE Fighter (144)

6 TIE Bombers (72)

This still leaves 12 points for modifying, but is the most I could field... though you could certainly reduce the Raider some for a couple more ships.

The mind boggles at more than 20 TIE Fighters on a single side... the time... the plinking dice... the bumps...

Thanks,

I'm going to keep 25 small bases total. That should be plenty. I rarely get to play but I'd like the kit ready so I can grab it and go.

This will help.

P.S. I'm expecting that if they are using my stuff a maximum of 8 TIEs in 2 groups of 4 by different players. Arge.... even 12 would be too many for me.

That's really the limiting factor... you really have to plan ahead if you want to field a lot of the same model in Epic games.
