Vader, Admonition, etc.

Hi, everyone. This came up in a game I played in yesterday. My opponent was running Darth Vader as his commander. At one point he used Vader multiple times during an attack, using more than one token to reroll some dice more than once.

My assumption is that Vader can only be used once per attack. His was that he could be used multiple times, as the trigger is simply "while attacking", which would continue occurring until it was resolved. Now, Vader explicitly states "1 defense token". Admonition, on the other hand, has a similar wording but says "a defense token". I'm thinking that would be interpreted in the same way. If either of those can be used more than once during the same attack/defense, then what is to stop you from re-rolling over and over with Ordnance Experts, as it contains the same trigger of "while attacking" as does Vader.

To me all of this points to a single use per attack. Is this correct? I could not find any strong guidelines on triggers and card use in the rulebooks or FAQ. Thanks for any help!

RRG, Page 5:

  • A “when” effect occurs at the moment that the specified event occurs and cannot occur again for that instance of the event.
  • A “while” effect can be resolved during the specified event and cannot occur again during that instance of the event.
  • A “before” effect occurs immediately before the specified event and cannot occur again for that instance of the event.
  • An “after” effect occurs immediately after the specified event and cannot occur again for that instance of the event.

Long story short, upgrades can be triggered once per opportunity - Vader can only spend a defense token in order to reroll any number of dice once during an attack. Admonition can only discard a token (not spend) to cancel an attack die once during a defense (this still allows the ship to "spend" another evade defense token to cancel another die at long range, per the normal effects of defense tokens).

I thought I looked all through that book, I'm not sure how I missed that section. But thanks, that's exactly what I was looking for!

It is the Effects and Timing section.
