Shadows of the Empire?

By Darkcloak, in X-Wing

Can it be done?

Would there be a market for a SOTE film? How would they get around the obvious age gap? Perhaps this is how we are able to have young recasts of classic roles like Luke and Leia?

I personally would love to see a movie about Dash Rendar. I think he is a classic character and too good to be left behind in the non canon legends. How cool would it be to see Xizors Starviper? The Outrider? Very cool.

Perhaps with the coming of Rogue One, we will have a suitable Young Han? All we need now is a charismatic young black man (I could think of a few) to play Lando, a couple goofy white kids for the Skywalkers. If we got on the ball right away James Earl Jones might even be persuaded to do Vader. That old fart from the prequels is probably the exact right amount of old to reprise his role as Palpatine as well. Who would play Xizor though? Oh he'd have to be evil, and very very handsome. I almost want to say Nathan Fillion for Xizor. I bet he would eat that role right up.

Anyways, that's my thoughts! Shadows of the Empire was too good to let die when Lucas first had the idea, it was too good in the 00s when they finally did it, and it's still too good now!

All hail Shadows of the Empire!

EDIT: Oh yeah, also we'll get toys. Maybe they could even shoe-horn Talon Karrde in there too? Then we could have his rusty ass scow to fly around, how cool would that be?

There were toys for Shadows of the Empire back in the day; I've still got my Dash Rendar action figure somewhere. The SoTE movie boat sailed long ago though. If I'm not mistaken they were thinking about doing one at the time. There are too many problems with trying to do it now, even aside from recasting. The fact it is no longer canon for one. Of course they could always bring it back and make it canon if they wanted to, but I doubt they will.

Shadow of the Empire was a working title for ep7 for a bit.

Yeah, Dash was the only one in that era of toys who actually was a big buff dude. Kinda funny. Did they ever make an Outrider toy?

Can it be canon again? This is why the Legends/Canon split is a good thing because now we can go back and revisit these old stories and bring them back up to date, bring them back into the Star Wars saga.

I would be okay with a re-write of that plot, if it meant SOTE was canon again.

I don't know. Kids (and even 20-somethings) have no idea what Shadows of the Empire is, as they were too young or not even born at the time. X-Wing uses the ships because X-Wing needs lots of ships, but other than that I kind of doubt they'll bring back SOTE any more than they will bring back X-Wing versus TIE Fighter or Rebel Assault II, or make a movie out of Yoda Stories.

I think there is too much freedom ahead for Disney to want to revive SoTE, like most of the EU stuff

See I think it's that exact sort of freedom that will allow Disney to remake stories like SOTE. Most kids don't remember Dash, but us old timers (the same ones who complain about new ships not being OT ships) will remember, and we'll be the ones taking our kids to see that story. There is a huge trend in retro gaming that has been going on for years, kids are just now digging out their parents N64s and soon they'll be plugging in stuff like Pod Racer, Rogue Squadron and Shadows. I wouldn't be surprised if Disney already had something in the works.

Now I'm not gonna pretend the rose colour is anything but the glasses, but I'm really optimistic in the mornings! I think at the very least SOTE will make a return as a comic series. I know for a fact I'm not the only SOTE fan out there.

To assert that in an entire field of SOTE fans, only one had grown up to be a scriptwriter...

It seems unlikely - there would lots of story credit they may not be willing to pass around to all the creators the various media tie ins from the original days.

The thing to watch will be books and comics. There are multiple comics (and 1 book) going now that occur post-ANH. Keep an eye on Vader and Star Wars - once they get to Hoth you'll have a better idea of the plans

As long as they leave out the parts that give Mr. Non-consensual his nickname...

I think the new star wars films have copped enough flak as it is for being derivative without bringing back the most derivative character ever conceived in the EU.

Solo's dead for a reason - and it isn't so we can resurrect Solo-Lite

Could potentially see it as an animated series like Rebels, I'd imagine.

Both the Clone Wars and Rebels have been happy to draw from the EU.

I'd like to see a live action or comic of the original Han Solo trilogy.

(The trilogy that introduced outlaw techs, Z-95s, The Corporate Sector Authority etc).

It'd be a wicked space western.

The Outrider is in the revised version of EP 4, so if you want to pretend Dash is in there, he is canon.

Z0053755.jpg And yes, there were toys ;)

Shadows was okay as it was, when it was original. I can still enjoy the original Shadows. The story hasn't gone anywhere, canonicity having no say in whether we can enjoy a story or not. While elements of the story (most obviously Black Sun) may reappear in the new canon, I think the actual story of Shadows of the Empire will remain in the Legends continuity with the Thrawn trilogy, Force Unleashed, and such abominations as the Yuuzhan Vong.

As long as they leave out the parts that give Mr. Non-consensual his nickname...

Let's not get into that here okay?

Edit: Actually no. That's totally wrong too. I think it would be very wrong to leave out that disgusting bit about Xizor, just like it's wrong not to talk about that particular crime. When I got into Shadows I thought Xizor was a cool bad guy, then I learned about that part of him and it filled me with utter contempt. He really is a disgusting character based on that alone. If we were to get a re-do of SOTE it would be a real injustice to women and to that cause to leave that part of the story out for the sake of discretion. We're adults now, we don't hide the ugly bits or make excuses. We deal with it. Xizor was a rapist. Kinda makes the Starviper less fun now though...

Wow that toy looks ugly as hell!

Pretty cool to see the Outrider in e4 though!

So what?

I wasn't born for almost a ful decade after ANH was released and that never hampered my enjoyment of the first film.

That. Is. Awesome.

Thanks for sharing, I had no idea.

Why does Dash wear those big shoulder things? Does he just wear them to look like a ****** or what?

Mid 90s was a different time...

While the entire story may not be canon, parts of it were canonized. Specifically, the YT-2400, which appeared in ANH and is also in the new Disney Infinity 3.0. This was one of the highest canon for books before the Legends thing, and is very likely to end up finding a place if and when Disney decides to start pulling more heavily from legends to the prime universe.

Likely sources in addition to Shadows of the Empire would be:

Dark Forces/Jedi Knight games : Specifically Kyle Katarn

Force Unleashed games : Juno and Starkiller (Starkiller would be WAY toned down for any cinematic universe)

Zahn's Trilogy : Mara Jade may end up in Episode 8 or at least namedropped. Who knows!

Get back here, Jesssiiicccaaaaa!

I'm just waiting for Xizor to show up in the Vader comic.

The problem with Shadows of the Empire was that as much as people might have thought he was cool, Dash is really just Han 2.0 and there is very little interesting happening in that story that would make a decent movie. The most interesting thing about it comes from the novels where Xizor is flushed out a bit as the 3rd most powerful person in the universe wanting to be the 2nd.
