The only ship I think should have a system slot that dosen't is the firespray.

Don't care, still dumb.The Tech Slot exists to allow them to add systems upgrades they don't want to add to the older ships (Comm Relay on a TIE phantom? No thanks) while also not giving Fire Control System, Advanced Sensors .etc to the new ones.
If those upgrades are broken on old ships, then change what they do.

In fact, how it SHOULD work is that TFA ships should simply have an "Advanced" Modification icon on them. Which allows them to take "Advanced" Modification upgrades in their Modification slot. They can still take regulard Mods, but they also have the option of taking "Advanced" Mods instead.
But giving new ships an entirely new slot type that is, thematically, the same as two already existing slot types, ON TOP of those other slots, is dumb.
If Poe had access to FCS or advanced sensors that would just be stupid.
G-1A's with Comm Relay would be dumb. Super Corran with Comm Relay would get dumb too, albeit about as equally dumb as FCS.
The Tech slot is there so that they could create a handful of upgrades balanced specifically with FO's and T-70's in mind.
Having the Tech upgrades just be systems/giving tech upgrade ships systems slots instead would be stupid. Aggressors do not need Comm Relay.
I understand your question, however. The slots are only there to differentiate the ships and their abilities. I assume originally they might have been something else, but right now they are just there to keep ships in different groups and give people reasons to take them that make them different then the other ships in the same cost and groups.
To this day, I think that torps should gain a free Crit on big ships, and missiles a free crit on small ships. It makes sense.
Who knows FFG used my defender suggested fix, so maybe they will adopt this too
Thematically, I don't really enjoy that systems and Tech are separate. Within the game itself though, I believe it is necessary to differentiate and expand the roles of different fighters. There is little to no expansion beyond "Hey I have this hoo-dingey I put on my ship!" for new upgrade slots at this point. While on that note though, my thoughts are only surface level. For example- Illicit was very inventive, and a great way to distinguish the scum faction. But what came along with the illicit upgrade? The Salvaged Astromech, which are to Rebel Astromechs what the Tech slot is to the systems slot. Repetitive, yes, but allows more differentiation in ships and ship builds.
And hey, who knows? perhaps one day we will see a ship with a systems slot and a tech slot. That would be interesting. I guess.
