Wave 10: We may need to start scraping.

By KCDodger, in X-Wing

I've seen a couple of people talk about not having ships filling the same role or doing the same thing because it would be too much and later coming back suggesting aces packs & repaint of ships that are already out... that confuses me to no end.

Having ships that fly the same but have a different model is bad and chokes the game out, but having ships that fly the same & have the EXACT SAME MODEL in a different color is a good thing?

...and before anyone says anything about putting fixes in the repaint packs, couldn't they do the same thing in the new ships? Personally, I'd rather buy a new hunk of plastic that represents a new ship than get my 13th X-Wing ot 16th TIE fighter....

Jamming more ships in when existing ships are lacking means that those present options are even worse.

Maybe so, but how would cranking out repaints be any different than jamming more ships in? Like I said in my previous post, fixes could be included in with the new ship just as easily as in with the repaint AND we don't get stuck with the same thing we've already bought a box full of.

Q-Wing?

So... There are only a few options left I can see for our factions as of now.

You know, I never said there wasn't anything to put in. But X-Wing is a game that is hurt significantly by redundancy.

If there's one thing it doesn't need, it's a bunch of ships that do the same thing. The problem is however, that many ships from many games were made to be same-but-different for the sake of balance. That hurts the miniatures game. It really does.

So we have to ask ourselves, "What can each and every one of these ships do that is not already being done?"

And after finding that answer, we then need to ask, "Is that too much of a change?" or "Is that too powerful?"

He is 100% correct. There are plenty of ships still out there that can be used. The problem is what roles are left to be filled by each of the three factions. We have light, medium and heavy combat fighters, light and heavy interceptors, large combat and support ships, huge combat and support ships. Most of these roles are already filled by each faction, when the missing ones get filled in what role is left for each of the factions to grab.

FFG has been selecting a ship for each role each fation can play in. We are running out of playable roles to fill up, not ships. When we start looking at mining or hospital ships as the next wave, then we will be done.

Precisely.

I disagree. They don't just package fixes in Aces/Veterans packs.

They also package brand new ships. Such as the TIE Shuttle. No seriously, it has a lot in common with the TIE Bomber, but it ain't a TIE Bomber , y'know..?

They give us a lot of options. I like- no, love these packs. It gives me a reason to not just buy a duplicate, but a really cool, visually distinct duplicate that also gives me new ways to play it.

New pilots for old ships is never a bad thing.

But redundant ships most certainly are. This is why the Dunelizard is going to have such a hard time finding its place in the game- because it and the Ixiyen fil the Kekrax's role. (which was ACTUALLY a light interceptor.)

There's heaps of ships they COULD release in the future. But most of them are extremely obscure, and don't have that instantly recognisable Star Wars appeal.

I can guarantee that FFG doesn't want potential new players to walk into a store to witness a game in progress that doesn't feature any 'Star Wars' ships. It turns new players off.

This, coupled with the ever increasing bloat of the game leads me to believe that rather than continue to release more and more obscure EU ships for X Wing, that sooner or later we will see an X Wing 2.0. Hopefully with some more advanced rules and using books and lists instead of cards, and using D6 dice instead of custom ones.

But I think that last part might be dreaming ;)

Does anyone really want the bloat that Star Trek attack wing has?

I saw it by the xwing section in a hobby store, and they are finding the most obscure things to pull out. And the preview for the new bajoran sail,ship..?

I'd rather have bloat than the end of the game

And I don't want to see they Preybird. Nobody likes the Preybird do they?

Uh... The Preybird would be one of the few EU ships that fits your criteria about doing new things. It has a rear concussion missile launcher. Small base, rear facing secondary arc from which you can only fire missiles. Throw a couple of Guidance Chips in the blister and a way of getting an extra munitions token and you've got a cool, unique ship from (arguably) the best part of the EU (Zahn's stuff).

Who doesn't want the Preybird?

We need Consortium.

Huh. Okay, sure why not. Though, The TIE/SF is about to do that. Probably better too.

What does 'the end of the game' mean to you? GW stopped producing Epic years ago, and the taccom forums are still running hot, and there's a thriving tournament scene.

Good games don't die when they go out of print. In fact, there's something to be desired about a game that is a complete unit. You can buy what you want, without fearing that next release or update which messes with the game balance.

Here at Sienar fleet systems, there is no such thing as a bad idea!

(We don't like to mention letting Admiral Zaarin head up the TIE Advanced project).

The relative badness of that idea is suspect.

He did produce several functional craft and the project met all stated goals.

Including the military coup goal?

They had to do something to explain why the Imperials lost at Endor. Replace all those Tie Fighters and Interceptors with Avengers and Defenders and see how well it goes for the Rebellion. Zaarin did as much damage to the Empire as the Ewoks, if not more!

Well, I suppose they could have not brought in the Avenger and the Defender in the game, and just let you use canon ties... Hm...

That seems to be fairly uncreative. I think I still have a list of 7 for each faction.

I wouldn't even know man, I'm just entirely out of ideas.

Your name serves you well ;)

People always say this as if they're the first one to do so, and as if they're being witty.

I mean there's a reason I chose this name.

hahaha this made my day

Kudos to you, Lackwit - I cannot like that post enough :D

Though, The TIE/SF is about to do that. Probably better too.

The TIE/sf? You mean that TFA TIE that looks almost exactly like the TIE/fo, which looks almost exactly like the TIE/ln, which already had one repaint with the Gozanti?

And here I was thinking you were against redundancy Captain! :P

The TIE/sf is much more different from the TiE/fo than the TIE/fo is from the TIE/ln.

But this isn't saying much - an extra antenna, different engines, reinforced pylons on which the solar panels are attached.

[iNSERT PLOT ARMOUR HERE]

I don't think I'm ready for X-Wing 2.0. I'm not sure what would be worse: having the old models be compatible and having a redundancy issue with new releases, or have it not be compatible and having to by everything over again.

You all might think im crazy, but I'd rather see an "Advanced" X-Wing version. Make it more simulationish.

Or mimic Imperial Assault. X-Wing as it stands is like the IA skirmish game. For X-Wing they would just need to release a campaign series. Let you make a team of pilots; choose their skills and equipment. They could either release new models with new colors, or release them unpainted, and let players get the painted "skirmish" models if they want them. They could still trickle out skirmish models like some scum huge, or new movie models but otherwise shift focus to campaign play.
