Wave 10: We may need to start scraping.

By KCDodger, in X-Wing

So... There are only a few options left I can see for our factions as of now.

IMPERIAL

GUNBOAT

MISSILE BOAT

SCUM

SKIPRAY BLASTBOAT

That's seriously it though. I mean that right there is one wave but... What the hell else is there after that?

Today right here you suck real bad laxx...

X-Wing has the potential to grow indefinitely, but only if you don't care about it being a Star Wars dogfighting game... which seems a rather moot point, since that ship has long since sailed. It might be time for a rebrand, methinks.

I'll be honest, Joe.

I never have any friggin' clue what you're trying to convey with the smileys. I imagine somebody making those exact faces in that exact order and I'm just left with...

' Start ' scraping ?

There's an active thread with a huge list of ships for each faction.

Yes, but how many of those does anyone actually want to see in X-wing?

There's been advocates for quite a large percentage of them, actually. But let's not try and speak for other people, shall we? How many of them would you like to see in X-Wing?

Nah... ain't nothing left to put in the game... ER?!

:(

You know, I never said there wasn't anything to put in.

But X-Wing is a game that is hurt significantly by redundancy.

If there's one thing it doesn't need, it's a bunch of ships that do the same thing. The problem is however, that many ships from many games were made to be same-but-different for the sake of balance. That hurts the miniatures game. It really does.

So we have to ask ourselves, "What can each and every one of these ships do that is not already being done?"

And after finding that answer, we then need to ask, "Is that too much of a change?" or "Is that too powerful?"

That's when FFG gets to start making stuff up, like the TIE Offender!

I'm offended by that.

:D

I think the V1 shows that the designers can be creative and create niche rolls.

Well of course! They're very good at what they do!

But it's still always a huge concern.

And I don't want to see they Preybird. Nobody likes the Preybird do they?

Don't forget the Q-Wing!

I JUST REALIZED WAVE 9 IS THE NEXT ONE NOT WAVE 10

I'M SORRY

See, the fact that you listed 1 more wave you could think of made the title make sense anyway.

Apology accepted Captain Nee.. er, Lackwit.

We have been swimming in articles and releases in the last six months after all.

Lovely, lovely articles...

That's a lot of boats.

I feel like FFG kind of pigeonholed themselves into this problem with the small amount of numbers you can use for attack and agility. You can only have so many combinations of 1-4 attack and 1-3 agility. The fact that these are aligned with physical dice rolling though makes it a space that was bound to be cramped anyways. It's going to have to come down to the dial and upgrade slots that really continue to differentiate ships, and to a lesser degree, hull and shields.

It's called the Imperial Navy for a reason!

Somebody apparently doesn't have access to Wookieepedia.

FFG has been selecting a ship for each role each fation can play in. We are running out of playable roles to fill up, not ships. When we start looking at mining or hospital ships as the next wave, then we will be done.

A lot going by the thread.

Fair enough. As my post may have implied, we've already gone beyond anything I care that much about. Obvious TFA and future movie/Rebels stuff aside the only old EU ship I really still want to see is the Gunboat. I guess the Missile boat can come too, though I didn't enjoy that part of TIE Fighter as much as a kid because I'd already gotten to fly a Defender alongside Vader and the Missile boat felt boring after that. The Starchaser and T-wing showed up more in pirate fleets as I recall too, and it was always more interesting fighting the Rebels or Imperial traitors than them. Beyond that I don't really recognize anything else in that list; I bailed on the EU long before the Vong showed up and largely dropped out of Star Wars fandom in the mid-2000s really until X-wing came along.

So tl;dr aside from one glaring absence(gunboat), I feel like X-wing is largely 'finished' and could do nothing but release 'Ace' packs and alternate color schemes from now until the end of time and I'd be happy. Unfortunately I'm more likely to be doomed to be a grumpy old man before my time about it :P

Although the # of different ships in TFA was rather limited there is still enough to stretch it out over a few waves. Remember that Wave 5 released with only 2 large ships. You only need 3 ships to make a full wave. Also there are the special releases (in between wave releases) such the aces and newer veterans packs and Scum is still due 2 huge ship epic expansion packs.

Aces repacks will make up half the ships in the next couple years. I think that is a good thing.

Must have all the ships from SWG.

First Order TIE Interceptor

First Order TIE Bomber

Kylo Ren's Shuttle

Or, maybe we could get Clone Wars era ships.

I've seen a couple of people talk about not having ships filling the same role or doing the same thing because it would be too much and later coming back suggesting aces packs & repaint of ships that are already out... that confuses me to no end.

Having ships that fly the same but have a different model is bad and chokes the game out, but having ships that fly the same & have the EXACT SAME MODEL in a different color is a good thing?

...and before anyone says anything about putting fixes in the repaint packs, couldn't they do the same thing in the new ships? Personally, I'd rather buy a new hunk of plastic that represents a new ship than get my 13th X-Wing or 16th TIE fighter....
