Wave 10: We may need to start scraping.

By KCDodger, in X-Wing

I don't think I'm ready for X-Wing 2.0. I'm not sure what would be worse: having the old models be compatible and having a redundancy issue with new releases, or have it not be compatible and having to by everything over again.

You all might think im crazy, but I'd rather see an "Advanced" X-Wing version. Make it more simulationish.

Or mimic Imperial Assault. X-Wing as it stands is like the IA skirmish game. For X-Wing they would just need to release a campaign series. Let you make a team of pilots; choose their skills and equipment. They could either release new models with new colors, or release them unpainted, and let players get the painted "skirmish" models if they want them. They could still trickle out skirmish models like some scum huge, or new movie models but otherwise shift focus to campaign play.

Good call, that could be a way to go. Add new game formats - mission books, narrative campaigns and the like.

This, coupled with the ever increasing bloat of the game leads me to believe that rather than continue to release more and more obscure EU ships for X Wing, that sooner or later we will see an X Wing 2.0. Hopefully with some more advanced rules and using books and lists instead of cards, and using D6 dice instead of custom ones.

But I think that last part might be dreaming ;)

I think cards are a good choice, although I'd like to see a much greater use of keywords to save space and get some uniformity of effects.

But I actually think they need to keep the custom dice... but instead of two (red and green) they need Armada- or IA-style attack dice with multiple colors, and no defense dice. It would be interesting to see ships that are accurate but low-damage snipers, as well as brutal but low-accuracy bruisers, in addition to the middle we have now.

And I'm sort of with you. I have some ideas about how they could do it that would be healthy for the game, and I think it'll be healthier if they do it sooner rather than later.

But see, I don't think they can do that without releasing an entirely new ruleset with new cards and new... everything. Maybe that's not X-wing 2.0 for you, but I think that's how I'd do it: release an Advanced X-wing box set for $40 or so, with revised rules, plus new upgrade cards and pilot cards

for every game element.

I would kill for an IA+Xwing campaign.

FFG may never run out of ships but more and more of us will run out of... interest?

B-wing? You betcher sweet bantha!

Millenium Falcon? Well duh...

Starviper? Um, yeah. I kinda remember SotE. Was kinda cool.

Kihraxz? What now? OK, I guess I want some scum X-wing kinda thing sure.

R-41? No thanks. Those things were garbage and look like garbage and no.

Rihaxffkfazxxzz? What the what?

Tie version 72? Later y'all...

I was going to say somthing along these lines, but you said it perfectly.

And that's perfectly fine. You're 100% entitled to that opinion, and if that's the way you feel that's fine, you can go on your way while the rest of us enjoy our SHINY NEW TOYS.

there haven't been any ships so far that I don't like, it's just we are running out of stuff from the EU.

No, we're not. We're seriously not. Not even close to it .

And then there's Rebels. Clone Wars. Rogue One's right around the corner. Episode VIII. And beyond.

And then there's the contentious issue of the sequels. Of new game modes (people do keep on asking about Trench Runs, about snowspeeders and AT-ATs)...

Scraping the barrel? We've barely scratched the surface...

I'm here until they get the Ixiyen, Rihkxyrk, Vaksai, Dunelizard, Kimogila, Krayt, Sorosuub Yacht, YKL-37R Nova Courier, TIE Aggressor (and even the Belbullab-22 and ETA-2 Actis Interceptor). My interest won't be sated until I can field them all. SWG4life.

(I want creature handlers and dozens upon dozens of animals in IA - then I'd buy into that game)

Does anyone really want the bloat that Star Trek attack wing has?

I saw it by the xwing section in a hobby store, and they are finding the most obscure things to pull out. And the preview for the new bajoran sail,ship..?

The thing to remember for Attack Wing, is that the monthly release schedule has burned through ship so much faster than we will ever. And having it being specific ships helps them pad things out. Last year we had the most releases ever. Yet, we had 2 Waves, 2 Epic releases, a new Core, a mini wave for TFA. We had 9 new ships for the base game, with 2 epics, and content for 6 already released ships.

Compare that to Attack Wings 11 waves, for 33 ships, plus their single Epic release. We are years away from even being close to where they are at the end of 2 years.

If all else fails, FFG have already proven that they are not above collaborating with Disney and making something up.

This is not a bad thing.

Also R-41s are awesome.

Like I said earlier, there's PLENTY of ships left in the EU.

There's just no GOOD ones.

Now yes, I know GOOD is subjective, but brand recognition is super important for games like this. Nearly all gamers are at least a little bit of a Star Wars fan, so when they see some guys playing X Wing at the local store, those ships need to be recognisable as Star Wars ships. And likewise, when a prospective gamer starts looking into the game, it needs to FEEL like Star Wars to him, and the more obscure EU garbage that gets pumped into the game, the more that feeling dissipates.

FFG isn't silly enough to start pumping cash into developing things like Starchasers and TIE Droids.

I honestly thought you were being silly and typing in gibberish names to prove my point at first. I recognize that some many on these boards are willing to stick around and scoop up any old ship that FFG can pry out of the lore. There will, however, inevitably be a point of diminishing returns with fewer and fewer sales as ships become more obscure. The real question is where does that point lie? You can bet that folks at FFG have been thinking long and hard about this.

If all else fails, FFG have already proven that they are not above collaborating with Disney and making something up.

I wouldn't count on that happening very often, though. I imagine it's very time-consuming.

Though, The TIE/SF is about to do that. Probably better too.

The TIE/sf? You mean that TFA TIE that looks almost exactly like the TIE/fo, which looks almost exactly like the TIE/ln, which already had one repaint with the Gozanti?

And here I was thinking you were against redundancy Captain! :P

WEll then you clearly aren't very familiar with the TIE/SF. It's an extremely different ship in terms of capabilities, and offers far more than the TIE/FO.

Personally, I feel FFG needs to stop with all of the "Star Wars Galaxies" stuff. It's all terribly obscure (to most of us), and the ships all look a bit silly.

I would think that most people interested in a ship-to-ship dogfighting game would be more apt to buy starfighters that appeared in the "Rogue Squadron" series, the "X-Wing/TIE Fighter/X-Wing Alliance" PC games, and the "Shadows of the Empire" game/multimedia event. Not an abandoned MMORPG.

So far, we've seemingly got "Rogue Squadron" (basically the OT ships) and "Shadows of the Empire" ( Outrider , StarViper, Hound's Tooth , and IG-2000 ) covered. But we're still missing the arguably iconic Imperial Assault Gunboat from "X-Wing/TIE Fighter/X-Wing Alliance" ... as well as some of the EU ships in those games such as the Pursuer ("Dark Empire"), Cloakshape fighter ("Dark Empire"), Skipray Blastboat (Thrawn trilogy), and the Corporate Sector IRD fighters (original Han Solo trilogy).

Stuff like the Mist Hunter , Dengar's jumpship, the K-Wing, TIE Punisher, the Raider, and all of these "SWG" ships? They feel like bloat. And not just bloat, but *bad* bloat.

Well, I guess I understand the need for an Imperial epic, i.e., the Raider... But still...

If FFG keeps dredging up more and more obscure ships for X-Wing, I do believe interest will wane.

The only real strategy for FFG will be to abandon the OT altogether and begin to focus on TFA and beyond.

On the contrary, I have been waiting for the Mist Hunter since wave 1. Heck, since a year before wave 1 even hit when the game was first announced! It's not bloat to me -- it's the climax of the game!

I am fairly certain that the BH ships are a bit above those sources you listed as being better than Galaxies.

Also, your opinion is not the standard. Star Wars is a BIG fandom. There are ships I don't particularly care for, but that doesn't mean it is wrong for someone else to want it. FFG seems to be a fan of Galaxies, and that is fine. I though the Punisher was a stupid looking ship. Yet, FFG made a beautiful model that I wanted.

That is the joy of all the new media coming out. We get a movie a year for the forseeable future. Also Rebels and the novels, there is SO much to choose from. Personally, as someone who refuses to buy duplicates of any expansion, the repainted aces type packs are wonderful.

If FFG slows down the release schedule, and publishes ships from the media, they WILL have enough. Heck, the next Rebel Epic may be the Dornean Gunship - it has the virtue of movie screen time, and is featured alongside a CR-90 in twilight company - the battlefront novel. Also, it has docking space for x-wings!

Yeah, but look at your profile pic...

As for the rest of us? Yeah, Zuckuss and 4-LOM were "the other bounty hunters in the background." Nowhere near as iconic as Boba Fett, Bossk, and IG-88.

I can't even name one time I actually *saw* a picture of the Mist Hunter in some form of Star Wars media...

Umm, pretty certain that if you are fan of the ESB bounty hunters beyond Fett, you are a fan of all them equally.

I am still pretty sure a few more of these will show up...

:)

One or two more waves of new ships, and then what's left should stay left.

Bring on more epic ships!

Not necessarily. I, for one, dig Fett, Bossk, and (to an extent) IG-88. The rest I could live without.
