Red Ace Ability Question

By Muz, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Just wanted to know the order in which Red Ace's ability kicks in, i was playing the other day and had 1 shield left when he suffered a hit and crit (direct hit too) from an attack.

Does the hit go onto the shield, then you get the evade token thus canceling the crit or do you have to dish out all the damage before receiving the evade token?

Cheers.

You can't use the evade token gained from losing a shield to cancel any damage from that attack.

Evade tokens are spent during the modify defence dice step of the attack sequence.

Damage is dealt after this step, after the modified attack and defense dice are compared, so the opportunity to use an evade token has passed

The bold portion is correct. Follow through the steps of attacking, and it should become clear:

1. Declare Target

2. Roll Attack Dice

3. Modify Attack Dice

>Defender Modifies Attack Dice

>Attacker Modifies Attack Dice

4. Roll Defense Dice

5. Modify Defense Dice

>Attacker Modifies Defense Dice

>Defender Modifies Defense Dice

6. Compare Results - Evade dice/tokens cancel hit/crit rolls here and anything left over is dealt as damage in step 7

7. Deal Damage

The shield isn't lost until step 7, so the evade token would be added after. This makes Red Ace harder to land a hit on after it loses a shield. It excels if Comm Relay is added to the Tech slot so that the Evade token is kept at the end of the turn (if not used during the turn).
