Bossk and? Need Advice...

By Seamus013, in X-Wing Squad Lists

So, this Friday I am going to my 2nd tournament, took 3rd last month in my 1st tourney, got a cool gunner card, extra munition acrylic tokens, and some store credit (4th Kihraxz acquired)

Anyhow, I am having some trouble figuring out what to use with Bossk....

I have him at 57 points right now

His build: Bossk 35pts, Push the Limit, 3pts, Weapons engineer 3pts, Recon Specialist 3pts, K-4 Security Droid 3pts, Hound's Tooth 6pts, Engine Upgrade 4pts

This setup allows me to use nothing but the 1 banks, 1 straight and all stop manuevers with him and gain 2 focus, 2 target locks, and boost every turn without repercussions... I can have him complete a full circle with his firing arc covering the entire mat in 4 turns and in about 14 inches diameter....

my question is this:

How should I continue this list?

Currently I have inertial dampeners to give him the white all stop once so he can use actions, with 3 Binayre Pirate with Dead Man's Switches

This comes out at 100 points, but I'm not sure if it is a decent setup...

Any help would be greatly appreciated, and thanks to you all in advance. :D

Anyone?

don't know if inertial dampeners will do you much good, while it is a white maneuver you do get a stress so you won't have any actions, of course it does allow you to react to other ships that moved first.

TBH I don't use bossk much, I love the YV-666 but prefer the cheap slaver or moralo with a HLC, with a K4 and outlaw tech and if I have the points an engine upgrade.

A loaded Bossk is just a but too expensive for my taste.

as for the rest of the list I prefer feedback Z's over deadman switch, but I've been running my YV-666 with TBC with glittercrack and a 3rd ship as filler

I think it comes down to playstyle. My first thought was to cram another ace in there, like an IG 88 or maybe a firespray. Kath or boba fit with tactician and crackshot load out on either.

I like bossk setup there he's a strong beast built that way. I think feedback Zs are a great alternate.

This is a very expensive Bossk build. From some experience playing him and plenty of time spent reading up on how best to use the yv-666 online, I've concluded that the cheapest builds are best.

That said, why not shave just a few points off him to fit in Kath or a PS 10 Boba (if you're worried about aces and such). Kath would be my choice I think - two pilots at PS7 gives you a bit of versatility. I like her with Push the Limit, K4 and Engine Upgrade which takes her to 47 points (and she probably would benefit from dampeners!).

I suppose dropping the title might be an idea? I'm not convinced it's particularly effective, given that you have to lose a ship worth so many points just to enjoy its benefits.

Thanks for the replies everyone...

I guess this is why I enjoy X-Wing so much, there is a lot of variety to choose from...

I realize that This is not a cheap Bossk, but neither do I see it as an expensive one, at 57 points, I just have most of my experience with the YV and really love this setup... and I HAVE had good experience with the title... won me a few games now... :D

I could go with an Ace; Kavil, Talonbane Cobra, Guri, etc.... the only currently released Scum I don't own is the Scyks, so I have a lot of versatility.... for Scum, that is...

Ive rarely used this particular setup with Bossk, normally the engine upgrade and k-4 are not there, it is 50 points straight up. I was wanting to try this newer setup out against a variety of players though.

Thanks for the tips guys, I will look into some changes and see what I can come up with... and no, I don't intend on running 2 large ships unless it is the Brobots, but that is another list for another day...

Can you get Bossk down to ~50 points? First choice for me to exclude would be the title - I love the Hound's Tooth but only in friendlies and fun matches. I initially thought a Z95 for 6 points was a steal but - and this might just be me - I haven't had a close enough game when fielding Bossk that an extra Z95 would turned the match in my favor.

If you can get it down, you can add 2 Thug TLT's (boring but effective), you could add Boba (nice, fun build), you could stick 3 x Binyare Z95's in for blocking fun. Or you could pick a few generics from different Scum ships and see how a naked Syck, Kihraxz and HWK fly.

And no matter what you do, print this card out, always bring it with you and see if you can play it without your opponent noticing. The look on his face you start to round the table to lick his face is better than rolling 4 natural crits.

on second look if you can shave it down, lose the title. I like the bossk setup lots of actions, and very simple choices for movement. This helps alot on the 5 or 6th round of a tournament. I think this would fit and be very interesting to pair

Boba Fett (Scum) (39)
Veteran Instincts (1)
Proton Bombs (5)
Tactician (2)
Extra Munitions (2)
Slave I (0)

I think you could very easily drop that to 51ish and still have an effective Bossk.

Downgrade PTL to Calculation: it'll give you a way to consistently activate Bossk's ability and shave off two points. Not to mention PTL loses some of it's kick when you already have the K4, and it'll restrict you from using those tasty red maneuver's on your dial (which are all great to have as options).

Alternatively, downgrade PTL to Veteran Insticts: If your local meta is big on high PS arc dodgers, you can make Bossk a PS9 with Boost and go for an initiative bid, turning him into a nightmare for those kinds of pilots. You'll lose out on Calculation being able to trigger your ability more frequently, but you'll also potentially give Soontir Fel the fits trying to stay in your blind spot.

Drop the Weapon's Engineer: He's not Colonel Jendon or Latts Razzi, there's no reason to TL two ships at once unless you're really, really paranoid about not getting someone in arc, or I guess you might be able to red maneuver and possibly still have a TL to use (on a different target). Still, the Ugnaught can safely be dropped off at base.

Downgrade Recon Specialist to Outlaw Tech: This one isn't 100% necessary, but I'm a big fan of being able to use the YV's red maneuvers as liberally as I desire, and this just means I'm still modifying dice. Saves you one last point, to boot. With that said, RecSpec isn't terrible with Bossk, but given the choice I personally prefer my little Jawa co-pilot.

With that, you're now basically just running my tried n' true competitive Bossk, only you've fattened him up with the Hound's Tooth title. Still, 51 points? I think that's workable. 57 is a touch too chubby in my opinion, it definitely cuts out the space to put in true, blue threats outside of Bossk in your list. The last thing you want is the enemy to focus fire Bossk down early and not have enough "oomf" elsewhere in the list to make them regret it.

But 49 points? That opens up a second big ship like Boba, Kath, or IGB, all of which would be fantastic wingmen kitted out to fly with Bossk. Could even basically steal my list and throw in a pair of Black Sun Aces with Crack Shot, or you could put in a pair of TLT Y-Wings (or even go "old school" from a whole year ago and fly a pair of Warthog Y-Wings with Astromechs!). But with those points left over, I don't think a lone small-base "ace" is the right call. Maybe Guri, but with TBC and Kavil you'll just either be short on points, squeezing in a lone Z-95, or shoving in a bunch of upgrades that actually don't do jack for you. Even then, Guri only has five health and is one bad turn away from leaving you pretty much boned. Could drop The Hound's Tooth title and then literally have a carbon copy of the sort of Bossk I tend to run (which might be making me biased!), which would free up the points for TBC or Kavil, but I can understand not wanting to give it up. Heck, I might sling it back on myself sometime and see how it work with just Crack Shot on my BSAs. Then again, I already wanted to throw TBC back into my list once I've got a Cloaking Device.

With a "slightly overweight" Bossk, you're going for a second large base ship or a pair of little ones. Right now, your Bossk is a little too fat and the other 40+ points in your list aren't going to be able to be used super efficiently (in my opinion).

And no matter what you do, print this card out, always bring it with you and see if you can play it without your opponent noticing. The look on his face you start to round the table to lick his face is better than rolling 4 natural crits.

lol that would be epic!

I finally made my mind up, and since I will be getting free tgt locks to get my hits in with the K-4, I decided to drop both the engineer AND recon spec, and in their place I added a mangler cannon as well as Greedo and the Intel agent.

The hope is to get as many face up damage with him as I can, before Greedo screws me, hence keeping the Nashtah Pup. The Agent will keep me apprised to the situation, so I can boost accordingly, to keep the cannon in arc.

I decided to go with my favorite ship from the original trilogy, and use a Y-wing with him, Kavil by name... PTL, unhinged, TLT, engine upgrade, bomb loadout, extra munitions and proximity mines...

Tournament is tonight, wish me luck!! Thanks again for all the advice!!

Will be interested to hear how this went. Good luck!

To be frank, I would alpha strike that Bossk so hard the game would be over before it started. I can't wait to hear how you do!

I didn't fare too well, but in my defense, the first round of combat ended up with 12 attack dice against Bossk total, I rolled 1 evade vs 11 hits.... :/

Aside from that, not bad, I had the Nashtah Pup Fire off 3 times and each time got at least 1 kill, and once it was killing Kath Scarlet to victory... WITH Bossk's Ability firing off, was nice!

The Intel agent was almost completely forgotten, and the only time that Greedo took effect was a damned direct hit on me...

Kavil, however, saved the day, He removed Soontir Fel's Stealth device first turn, Bossk annihilated him, Kavil then followed suit with 2 hits and a crit on Carnor Jax with Proxinity Mines, before he nailed for 1 with the tlt removing his stealth device and opening up Bossk's 5 damage range 1 kill, victory, 4 rounds of game, took 10 minutes to destroy the Empires Aces...

Suffice to say Kavil in this format will see a lot of use, even more once my Ghost pre-order gets here...

Bossk will be getting some more work

I was announced as 3rd... but somehow there was enough bad math done that I ended in 8th actually :(
