Is Tripple A-Wing viable?

By Jiron, in X-Wing Squad Lists

I'm now considering my next purchases. I have 5 ships at the moment and I am planning to go for a tournament (mostly just to see the meta and fly some ships). I really love A-Wings and I came up with this list:

Tycho Celchu

-Push the Limit

-Homing Missile

Jake Farrell

-Test Pilot

-Proton Rockets

-Push the limit

-Cool Hand (so I can make two barrel rolls with focus+push the limit)

Arvel Crynyd

-Test Pilot

-Proton Rockets

-Daredevil

The plan is to Arc Dodge or block depending on the opponent. What are your thoughts?

3 Awings where Arvel has limited actions seems a little soft. Someone has a Green Arrow thread out there discussing running Awings that would make sense for you to read.

I also love a-wings and have run a couple with Corran. For a straight a wing list this is one I'm waiting to try:

All the A's (100)

Tycho Celchu (37)

Push The Limit (3), Proton Rockets (3), A-Wing Test Pilot (0), Experimental Interface (3), Expert Handling (2)

Jake Farrell (33)

Push The Limit (3), Proton Rockets (3), A-Wing Test Pilot (0), Autothrusters (2), Veteran Instincts (1)

Gemmer Sojan (30)

Proton Rockets (3), A-Wing Test Pilot (0), Autothrusters (2), Push The Limit (3)

There's a player who took 3 A-wings to a bunch of tournaments last year, and wrote up some battle reports on the battle report forum. You might try searching there.

If you like a wings you could try

Prototype pilot x 3 with the refit (15x3)

Jake with refit and ptl (25) add in Cool hand and test pilot (26)

Tycho with refit, ptl, a wing test pilot l, VI and autothrusters (30) remove autothrusters if you want jake with cool hand.

Not sure how it would fly but would be good at getting out of arc with the speed if you use them well. Iv ran a few a wings and the speed seems to throw some people just lack reliable fire power

Triple a-wings are always going to have trouble at timed events due to the lack of firepower. For that reason, you really need ordnance. Of course, then they get really expensive fast...

My triple A list is:

Tycho w/ push, test pilot, daredevil, experimental interface & proton rockets = 38

Jake w/ push, test pilot, VI, autos & proton rockets = 33

Green w/ push, autos & concussion missiles = 28

I haven't used it in a long time, and I have never taken it to a tourney. Its a pretty fun list though that relies on 'cat & mouse' flying. You want to use Tycho as bait since his crazy move shenanigans are the most effective at keeping him out of harms way. Send him straight for the enemy while the other two try to get into flanking positions. Then, on the turn when your opponent thinks he's got Tycho dead to rights, reveal a bizarre move, like 3 bank or 3 turn away from the enemy. Use daredevil and/or boost to get Tycho right out of any arcs (even better if you can keep him with a shot). Meanwhile your other two a-wings should be getting into firing range, ideally picking up a target lock if possible. And then the fun begins!

It will struggle against certain builds though, particularly stuff that's all PS9 or higher, and also high agility can be problematic unless you get the ordnance in successfully...
