How to expand upon the starter box

By Iceeagle85, in Star Wars: Armada Off-Topic

Hello fellow fleet Admirals i bought the starter box last year and now im thinking about how to expand it.

Because at the moment i have no one how wants to start this game (but my friends like to play it) i need to buy ships for both factions, first i thought i should buy the ships from the starter box to add more card variety but then i thought it's more of the same except for the cards.

So if a buy a Gladiatior and an Asssault Frigate could i play a balanced and fun game with these ships + the starter? Next i woudl buy the squadrons and after that the ships from the starter box.

Or should i buy ships in a completely different order?

Yes, those two ships will allow you to play a good 300 point game with either side. Add in squadron package for either side and you can have a more diversified list, but they are not necessary. If your friends buy a core set you can easily do a 400 point game between the two sets.

Assuming you have access to wave 2 in the near future, I would do it in this order.

GSD and Assault Frigate.

One of each fighter pack, Rebel, Imperial and S&V*

Raider and MC30*

ISD and MC80

VSD, Neb B and CR90 expansions.*

Dice and movement tool to flavor.

* These steps include the cheapest 6 packs, at $20 each. Maybe one of your play mates really wants to play a Rhymer ball or a CR90 swarm, so you get him to dip his toes into the pool, as it were.... :)

Thansk, that's perfect.

Thanks for the shopping list.

You guys have been a great help.

Another question: Did anyone every try a "multiplayer" game? You know playing with more than two people and everyone is controlling a ship/squadron.

I started with two starter kits to get the game on the tables for people to see. Next I added an assault frigate and a Gladiator. Then the fighter expansion for each side. I normally find myself playing rebel so M80 and M30 were next. I've been playing with a fleet builder for a while and this gives me a fair amount of leeway to design Rebel fleets.

The other thing is I have had to buy some upgrade cards online because of which cards you get with which ships. I've sent an E-mail to fantasy flight asking them to sell card packs, like turbolaser pack or defensive refit pack. I'd really rather buy from them than from somebody parting stuff out. If anybody else finds this annoying please let them know and maybe they'll do something.

Is a second starter kit a good purchase? I could definitely use the dice and the objective cards (i have just copied them for teh second player) but are 3 ships of each type useful(i assume everyone buys the expanions to get the new cards)?. I have read here and in other forums that the VSD is not so good thanks to the other releases and the Nebulon has the problem with its sides so im not convinced i would need 3 Nebulons or VSDs.

FYI you can find that shopping list cheaper if you shop around.

I normally score a blister box for about 13 dollars...and the ISD is going to cost me 35.

Just need to find the Gladiator...that mofo has been outta stock for a long time.

Didn't buy the wave one expansions that were in the starter kit, just bought the cards I felt I needed online. When I was shopping for starter kits I watched E-bay and waited for a price I liked. I paid $65 a piece plus shipping.
