A good, hard look at a Tie Adv. Prototype generic

By f0rbiddenc00kie, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Let's see what the Tie Adv Prototype has that makes it stand out...

1.) Literally only ship in game with green hard 1 turns, but as a generic you can't exploit it with PTL.

2.) Tied for cheapest Imperial missile holder.

3.) Cheapest boost & barrel.

4.) Built-in extra action economy.

5.) Free Evade after getting TL in any way, shape, or form.

Now... what can you do with that?

1.) Nothing. Makes the generics stress-resistant, I guess...

2.) Best Imperial XX-23 S-thread Tracers holder. Acceptable holding the following:

Advanced Homing Missiles (3) = doesn't need to spend TL. Can hurt high AGI targets.

Ion Pulse Missiles (3) = doesn't need to spend TL. Cheap ion utility

Proton Rockets (3) = 3 AGI

Concussion Missiles (4) = easy-to-hit damaging missile for non-missile bays

Homing Missiles (5) = doesn't need to spend TL

3.) This has now become the cheapest, most infuriating blocker in the game. Boost also gives you options and allows you to turn at greater speeds.

4.) TL + Evade one turn for defense when you don't have anything in firing arc into a hard turn + Boost + spend TL the next turn is a pseudo PTL with proper planning. TL + Evade is also more potent than x2 focus. Constant TL also means that if you save it, you can attack on the same turn you K-turn with respectable accuracy.

5.) Opens up weird support options like a Jendon Lambda Shuttle tossing around Evade tokens like Oprah passes out gifts, especially with Weapons Engineer. You get an evade! You get an evade! Oh, and pairs insanely well when OTHER ships use tracers, opening up unique options like K-turning with a TL + Evade (from a friendly tracer application) in the same turn or getting to use focus/boost/barrel with TL + Evade.

Personally, I was having a hard time justifying using a generic, but after thinking it through, it does have some weird niche merits and a LOT of sneaky tricks. Hopefully I sparked some ideas. If anyone sees anything I missed, be sure to share!

vader, inquisitor, 2 generics with lots of thread tracers to clutch force evades looks like a soild list.....

As you mention, it makes an excellent blocker, and is 2 points less than an alpha. However, its PS 2 compared to the alpha's PS 1 (lower is better for blocking role). The one thing the alpha has going for it is 3 attack dice (although the TAP has better health). So over all, I think the alpha is still better in that role, but there will be times when you can't afford or don't want to spend 18/20 pts (for autothrusters) and then the TAP becomes a good alternative.

Missile carrier is an interesting idea, but the competition between autothrusters and guidance chimps...also, given the fact that a scimitar is the same base cost (and can carry extra munitions), I'm not sure it is a good alternative for that role...

If the Baron Generic Pilot has a EPT - they can make extremely good Juke platforms along with the TIE/v1 title.

I think leaving Autothrusters off the generics is a perfectly reasonable thing to do. They're tough for their points, so it's usually a pretty good thing for the other player to be shooting at them rather than something else. 2 points is a minor cost to pay on Fel or a Bot, but it's a little more significant on a ship running 16/17 loints.

keep in mind if you have XX-23 tracers on a high(er) PS ship and PTL on generics... its title is take a free Evade action (emphasis) you can get *PS9 (* assuming thats whats carrying the missile) actions to get out of dodge, or in to dodge?) to help further your missile propaganda.

I really want to try 5 generics with prockets, titles and chimps. Should be good fun.

Yeah, I'm not so sure, either. Bomber does almost all offensive missiles better, with the added option of LRS and EM. However, the Prototype has amazing synergy with the tracers, so it does at least that and prockets better.
