Negative upgrade cards

By Lord Tareq, in Star Wars: Armada

Would anyone else like to see these for Armada? What they would do is you buy them for your ships as (extra) upgrade cards (1 negative upgrade card per slot), but they provide a malus and cost a negative amount of points. An obvious example of what such cards could entail would be:

Exposed Bridge «Officer Upgrade» -3 points ~When suffering the Crew Injured critical effect, your opponent may look at the top 4 cards of the damage deck. If any of those cards have a 'crew' critical effect, replace any existing face down damage cards with those cards (opponent's choice) face up, and discard the others.

This helps create even more flexibility in our fleets as we can tailor specific weaknesses in exchange for more points on positive upgrades, ships or squadrons. Plus it would be so characterful ;)

I think cards like the refit in X Wing, R eventually do in Armada. It might not be the next wave or two, but eventually they'll want to balance something through that method.

Title, "Poorly maintained" your ship has one less hull.

Intermittent power, if you roll two crits on an attack, discard one of the two die.

Title, "Poorly maintained" the first damage card you receive in a battle is always face up.

Incompetent gunners, you may only fire at one target.

Incompetent gunners, you may not make two attacks against the same target.

Intermittent power, if you roll two crits on an attack, receive one face down damage card.

Crew, Jar Jar, your own fleet will shoot you if they have any attacks left ;)

Title, "Fastest Hunk of Junk in the Galaxy", up your ships speed by one, decrease it's hull by two.

Many of these could be gamed by only placing on ships where it would never come up, but that's what play testing is for.

Its kind of a nifty idea, but I don't think it adds enough to the game to justify the increased complexity.

negative upgrade, sounds like an oxymoron downgrade cards is a fun idea though.

This is how I see it too. I don't think they will make cards that are expressly designed as a downgrade, just to open up points for your build. However, I do think that eventually, as some ships become obsolete, they will go the route that they have in X-Wing and create -cost cards that are more designed to bring balance back to weaker ships. I expect this is some time down the road though, as nothing currently feels obsolete to me (not even VSD's, regardless of what some people think.)

i think i saw a DWRR ship the GR-75 Rebel transport maybe that gave negative fleet points but if it was destroyed was worth double for the opponent

What it will open the door for is new themed battle scenarios. Especially if you have a very creative tournament organizer.

Rebels vs Imperials. 10 teams of ea. Double elimination. Depending on how your match ends could determine what happens in your next match.

Whether it's a free upgrade or forced penalty. The down grade cards could be engineered away. Point for point. So a 6 point penalty would require 6 engineering points to discard it.

Of course this could also be used with the face up damage cards that are already in place. There are obviously some that are worse than others, assign a point value to them to start off with face up cards. The point value chosen has to be a minimal of twice your engineering score.

I would like to see cards that have a massive boost, but also have a penalty, for example:

Offensive refit - Carrier refit - Ship gets +2 squadron, but -2 structure. 0 points.

With the higher point limit that has grown from 300 to 400 I don't think a -2 upgrade card would be that good. As for -20 point upgrade card again with the turn limits and flexible 400 point negative point upgrades are not really needed.
