A Pair o'YV-666 - does this work?

By MonkeyInSpace, in X-Wing Squad Lists

So, I really like flying the YV-666 and like the look of the pairing below but before I invest in a second YV over something I don't already have, I thought I would solicit feedback.

Would this hold water, competitively? It always feels a bit cheap to me to have a duplicate load-out (unless flying a simple swarm) but I think this combo would really be hard on other ships, given the total HP, the firepower and the combo of the pilot's abilities.

99 points

Moralo Eval (49)
YV-666 (34), “Mangler” Cannon (4), Outlaw Tech (2), Tactician (2), K4 Security Droid (3), Engine Upgrade (4)

Bossk (50)
YV-666 (35), “Mangler” Cannon (4), Outlaw Tech (2), Tactician (2), K4 Security Droid (3), Engine Upgrade (4)

My plan would be to have Moralo take off ahead while Bossk hangs back, to make most use from the Mangler.

Thoughts? Is this a dumb build based on how much I like the YV-666?

Thank you in advance,

Monkey

I don't really like Engine Upgrade on Moralo Eval. I don't feel that his pilot skill is high enough to really get much use out of it. With Bossk, I'd definitely give him Veteran Instincts to make the Engine Upgrade more useful. On second thought, the engine upgrade will help you turn around faster, so it could be pretty useful anyway. And if your PS is lower, you could always try boosting into a blocking position.

But with PS of 6 and 7, I'm not sure the initiative bid is getting you much, so I might just put the VI on Bossk.

No build is dumb! If you enjoy flying the ship, and would enjoy flying another alongside it, go for it. With Moralo, you've got your back covered pretty well and Bossk can manage some good hits. You also get tangible rewards for both red and green maneuvers on both ships. I'm not sure if running them identical is the best idea (and I'm only saying that because I haven't seen it in action), but go for it! Seems like a lot of fun!

So, if you add VI to Bossk then this is the exact build I have been using and am 3-0 with it. Have taken out Palpmobile, Poe/Wedge/Jake and Ye Olde TIE Swarm. These were all friendlies, no idea how it holds up against serious players, haven't tried it against TLT Thugs yet, that's usually my litmus on if I am flying something right.

Moralo wants a hlc, modified 180 degree 4 dice with no defenive range bonus' is brutal, and you get to keep crits from the k4 rerolls.

Imo EU is nearly an essential to give you near u-turns with your 3 hards and make sure high ps aces start in centre of your arc to make it so much harder to arc dodge.

With the k4, 1 moves are your friend with the odd 2-3 straight to get a surprise TL, also dont be afraid to tl something you might want to scare off instead of shoot. Using the bug out break to focus on your priorities.

When running 2 i'd imagine these guys dont want to split up, if they both aren't on the same target (tie fighters, sycks and interceptor excepted) they are going to have a bad day

Thanks for all the responses. I don't really get HLC - I mean, I do, I read a thread about it but I don't know how that is much better for me with Morelo than a Mangler, unless you're saying that when paired with the TL from K4, it has a significantly higher chance of hitting?

And thanks again, the feedback here made my choice for me and I ordered it via Amazon and look forward to giving it a test flight tomorrow :)

I hope it goes well for you. Boba+Bossk has been doing alright for me and running 2 YV-666 doesn't seem too different. Sounds like you're in for some exciting times!

Well, it depends on what you expect to see. If you're going against a Soontir Fel with Autothrusters and Stealth Device, you'll be glad to have pick the HLC... if you're going against a fat ship like the Decimator, you'll be glad to have pick the Mangler for the crit frenzy. Having both in the same list can actually be a good thing that add versatility.

As far as suggestion go, I would drop the EU on Moralo to upgrade the cannon to a HLC and give Crack Shot to Bossk. This way, if your opponent dodge your mangler cannon by a 0 margin, you could force him to cancel one of his evade and then tranfer the crit to a 2 hits strike. Crack shot also have the added benefit of forcing your opponent to overbid the dodge, spend some token he would otherwise not have spent. It then leaves them more open for the HLC shot coming from Morelo.

That is absolutely one of the best parts :P

I would discourage that, mixed lists usually are more flexible and therefor better in a tournament setting.

If you really like the ship, though, go ahead, there are worse squads!

Unless you plan on fortressing is it really worth it's points in this case?

But why? Outlaw is useful for the stop, sure but the turns can be done with a 1 bank + boost gaining a target lock and stress free........

1 bank + boost is not always possible with ships and obstacles on the field. You might be blocked with the one bank, after that you can't boost. With the turn, you might zoom past that ship.

I (almost) never make turns based on the token outcome, but if I'm going to make a red or a green move, it's certainly nice to get a reward for it. I have played with a bunch of other upgrades and this gives me that warm tingly feeling in my belly more than anything else does but I'd love suggestions to improve this build :)

My new YV turned up and I was surprised as how excited I was. Possibly the most excited I've been to get any ship (and I have almost all of them). Can't wait to try this out. Thanks again for all the help!
