Help me choose and refine list for first store championship.

By miles127, in X-Wing Squad Lists

I have been playing Xwing for about 2 years, and I use the term playing loosely. Mostly, I watch twitch streams, lurk in the forums, listen to podcasts, and read strategy articles. I have played around 10-15 games, all of them casual with family or friends. But I finally have a opportunity to play in a tournament! And I am not sure what to bring! I have come up with a list from each faction that I think will be fun to fly and semi-competitive. Below are the lists, feel free to make suggestions, my current list of ships is shown in my signature.

KAX ACES ======== 100 points

Jake Farrell [Proton Rockets, Push the Limit] (30)

Poe Dameron [R2-D2] (35)

Miranda Doni [Twin Laser Turret] (35)

================== Whisper Mini Swarm ================== 100 points
Academy Pilot (12) x 2
Omega Squadron Pilot [Crack Shot] (18) x 2
“Whisper”[Tactician, Fire-Control System, Advanced Cloaking Device](40)
======== Bossk YY ======== 99 points
Syndicate Thug [Twin Laser Turret, R4 Agromech] (26) x 2
Bossk [Marksmanship, Tactician, Gunner, Glitterstim] (47)

I think either your imperial or scum list could do well. Your rebel list looks like not enough points to get all the goodies those 3 aces want...

Whisper + mini swarm is a tried and true formula that still has had success recently. Probably your best bet if you're comfortable enough flying it.

As with all bigger events though, you're going to be flying something for many hours in a day....things will get hazy, you'll get tired, etc. etc.....so you really want to fly something you are completely familiar with, so things come almost by second nature.

That's my take on the situation anyway.

Good luck!

I agree, I think the Rebel list is made of three great ships, but you don't have them decked out well enough, but don't have the points to do that. I would take out the rockets and put on the refit, and then add autothrusters and maybe PTL to Poe. If you don't put PTL on Poe consider Test-pilot and predator on Jake.

I think that in a meta with Red Ace and Poe, TLTs are going to have a difficult time, so that hurts your scum list. I would worry that you will only get 2-3 damage through, and if they keep their distance they could regen that. If you think you can keep your fire focused well enough to get rid of one of them in a round or two it looks solid. If you get lucky rolling crits with Bossk (and the outmaneuver definitely helps there) you can take one of them out in a single round, but that seems risky to me.

This leaves your Imperial build. It will hurt when you face people with high PS. Not sure if it is the right move, but I would consider dropping one of the Omegas and using Howlrunner, so that you up the output of all of your ships. The problem is that this will be a much bigger target than the omega would be, but it would make the decision harder for your opponent whether they should go after howlrunner first or use their high ps ships to take out Whisper first, so it could keep whisper alive longer. If they don't have high PS, then I think it is better the way you have it, but I have seen a decent number of people flying Poe with VI lately.

After thinking about it, I think better than the suggestions I just wrote, dropping one Crackshot and taking VI on Whisper might be your best bet. Keeps Whisper from getting shot as easily and doesn't give them the target of Howlrunner.

Good luck!

Yeah I was kinda thinking the same thing especially since I don't have autothrusters

Whisper desperately wants VI...but now that VI Poe is en vogue not sure it will hold up

Yeah, Whisper want VI a lot even in the current meta. Swapping Tactician for Intel Agent would fit it in and still come out with a useful Whisper build.

Thanks for all the great feedback. I think I will probably go with the imperial build and figure out a way to get vi on whisper.

I'd just drop tactician for VI, keep crack shot, and get yourself a point for initiative bid to help Whisper shoot first. Phantoms need their cloak and more than stressing other ships.

My family came to town so I did not get to go to the store championship. But in the mean time I got the gonzanti! So I decided to switch my list around a little bit for the next tourney in March. Is this better or worse than the previous iteration.
