Just grabbed my third SC win in 2016 with Glittercrackbots at GothCon in Gothenburg (35 players). Went undefeated for the day, happy to say no wolfpacks showed up. Faced Soontir + Howlrunner and 3xBSP with crack in the final.

Why would you fear wolfpack/U-boat? DrugBots are favorable against it IMO. One Bro can manhandle that list once the missiles are spent, especially if they foolishly go after B first..

I don't fear wolfpacks as such since I know I have a pretty good chance against them as long as I don't mess upp the first approach. I just don't like the list. ;)

I won the Area 52 Store Championship down here in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia

My list was:

Miranda Doni (29)

+ Twin Laser Turret (6)

+ Tactician (2)

Gold Squadron Pilot (18)

+ Twin Laser Turret (6)

Blue Squadron Pilot (22)

+ Fire-Control System (2)

Prototype Pilot (17)

+ Chardaan Refit (-2)

The guy who came second was running Boba Fett, N'Dru & 2x Bandit Squadron Pilot, but I can't remember the specifics, unfortunately.

I got the chance to play at my 3rd and final Store Championship this weekend. I went undefeated in Swiss and then lost my Top 4 match. I have a weird streak going. The last time I lost a round in Swiss was at Worlds (round 3 and 4, so that makes 22 games in a row of Swiss I haven't lost), but I can't exactly remember the last time I won an elimination round -- it might have been at the NOVA Open.

  • Winter Kit: Only undefeated player through 5 rounds of Swiss. Did not make the cut. (draw + mod win)
  • SC#1: Only undefeated player* through 4 rounds of Swiss: no cut, won SC. (yay!)
  • SC#2: Only undefeated player through 4 rounds of Swiss, lost Top 4.
  • SC#3: Only undefeated player through 5 rounds of Swiss, lost Top 4.

This whole cut thing is obviously overrated. :D

* Actually Erich had 3 wins and a draw!

Here are this weekend's results. The TO, Brian Frost, did a fantastic job at running the event as always and is a great ambassador for the game. Side note, he himself has 3 SC wins out of 6 SC's attended!

The #1, #3, and #4 players after Swiss already had byes, so the bye went to the #2 player after Swiss.

The bumper scout is a cool idea.

The bumper scout is a cool idea.

It really turns it into more of a skill game of positional flying rather than just unloading a bunch of torpedoes and hoping for the best. In all 6 of my games the better player won. I did great in my first 5 games, but then had some tournament fatigue and made a ton of dumb mistakes that all compounded and led to a close loss. Kris flew great and won the Top 4 100-75.

On the table, did you like R4 or Overclocked better?

On the table, did you like R4 or Overclocked better?

I took Overclocked with the Plasma, because it has the same hit probability as R4 but is a point cheaper so that let me squeeze in Boba Fett while still having a point for initiative. If you use it more than once in a turn it loads you up with stress, and you need to set up your run with the Plasma guy so he doesn't have to turn right after firing the first torpedo. You have to spend a lot more time thinking about your opening with it, but that ends up being true of any squad I end up flying much, so it suits my playstyle.

There was one turn in my Top 4 match where he ended up with 3 stress on him. It was worth it to stay alive! Ditto in my round 5 match, he had taken 2x stress in the initial pass, but it was worth it to take 0 damage.

Edit.

The BumpMaster is a thing, and so is Boba Fett crew. Highlights include:

  • Facing off vs 100 point 3x scouts, and using Boba to discard Deadeye. Two of his Scouts never fired a torpedo all game.
  • First round of shots, blocking Omega Leader and then killing both Omega Leader and Wampa on that turn.
  • Getting pretty badly outflown in my Top 4 match (lots of little mistakes compounding), and losing my Proton guy JUST as he was about to unload his 2nd torpedo on Dengar, but still ending up in a potentially winnable endgame of BumpMaster perpetually blocking Dengar triggering APL.
  • In the same Top 4 match above, getting a crit on a Y-wing via primaries and deciding like a greedy idiot (tournament fatigue) to NOT to use Boba to discard it's TLT, trying to save it for Dengar's title instead. (The crit dealt was blinded pilot and he had 2 HP left, so I was hoping I could kill it outright before it shot.) I probably would have won the game if I had stripped the TLT mid game.

I was kind of curious what upgrades Boba got rid of during the tournament.

Why not use Boba to discard the torpedo instead of deadeye?

Why not use Boba to discard the torpedo instead of deadeye?

Because if they haven't fired any, the wording on Boba and on Extra Munitions is the same, so all Boba would do is take the EM token. Still one heavily modified torp left.

Shooting his (dead)eye out prevents the torpedo shot on the first dice exchange, and breaks the action-efficiency right in half.

Correct. And that ship is either dead in one round or it will get blocked next round. Either way it will never fire a torpedo.

Good to know, I hadn't paid any attention to the wording of EM until now.

Grand Slam in Greeley, CO

Had a great time, but couldn't stay till the end.

Top list was-

Chopper (Ghost)- fire control system, auto blaster turret, (missing one card here, might have been accuracy corrector)

Chewie (Falcon)- c3po, engine upgrade, gunner, falcon title, predator

After a few triple jumpmaster games, I actually had a similar idea in mind as well. You will almost never really end up firing 3 torps in a turn because of the real estate the ships take up and the asteroids, but a bumpmaster can break away and put himself in a different kind of position. I kept ending my games with torps in the bank so it felt like the third torpedo boat was wasted.

At an SC yesterday Boba managed to scrub the Punishing One title off of Dengar...

...somehow.

But yeah, Bumpmaster is definitely the way to go. I horribly flubbed my first two games in the deployment phase by facing head on and flying in aggressively, but after that Bumpy proved the critical piece each and every time.

I am still very new, but I do think the JM5K may be overshadowing some other very potent new additions. The Inquisitor is mean, can eat a fully modded torp hit, and gets significant bang for the buck, and that's with people still flying him like an Interceptor. The Ghost is also a whole lot of ship for under 40 points, and can be pretty easily set up as a VERY powerful blocker.

I fear for the Mist Hunter, but heard some bold ideas discussed on that front as well.

Megan probably would have done a lot better with some torpedoes on those scouts :)

I also have no idea how #1 beat #2...he must've really outflown him. That is a huge feat when #2 could remove 1+ ships before they fire.

Edited by bmf

The K-wings probably SLAMmed up to block and avoid the torp shots, then tore the Scouts up with turrets slowly as the Scouts struggled to gain arc shots on 3 small-based ships that don't really care about arcs.

Hmmmm... There must have been some oddness with inputting the lists into ListJuggler there. All of them had Proton Torps.

#2 had two ships bump during the initial exchange of fire, which really lowered his alpha strike. From there, #1 was aided by some really hot red dice while #2 had some really bad green dice.

This seems to become common practice with the 3 large bases. I dont see anything wrong or surprising about it, it's a real drawback of the 3scout lists.
