Haldir & Fair and Perillous

By 13nrv, in Strategy and deck-building

I would like to share with you a funny strategy based on Elves.

The main goal is to give a massive attack boost to Haldir heros with :

ffg_MEC41_60.jpg

And so one-shot some big ennemy before attack.

I need to boost the willpower of Haldir and so use the discard mechanic of Noldor with :

ffg_MEC44_145.jpg ffg_protector-of-lorien-core.jpg

1) Discard Elven-Light for protecor of lorien and boost willpower of Haldir
2) Play the Elven-light from discard pile, return it to hand and draw a card
3) return to 1)

With ressource generation and multiple Protector of Lorien, you could give an indecent boost of willpower to Haldir and draw a lot of card.
If no sufficient ressources, you could use drawed cards or Silver Harps for protector of Lorien.

Then use Fair and Perilous on Haldir which could easily gain a bonus of +11 attack.

We can also use these card to boost willpower of Haldir :

The miruvor could boost and ready Haldir. So Haldir could use is capacity for killing a big ennemy before ennemy attack and then reattack another ennemy after ennemy attack phase keeping boost from Fair and Perillous.

But with this mechanic, Haldir could be a strong questor or defender if needed with protector of lorien + Elven light.

I build a deck using this discard mechanic for boost and draw cards :

Discard
Total Cards: 51

Heroes (starting threat: 23)
Arwen Undómiel ( The Dread Realm )
Glorfindel ( Foundations of Stone )
Haldir of Lórien ( Trouble in Tharbad )
Allies (3)
3x Master of the Forge ( Shadow and Flame )
Attachments (27)
2x Steward of Gondor ( Core Set )
2x Elven Spear ( The Treachery of Rhudaur )
2x Rivendell Blade ( Road to Rivendell )
2x Rivendell Bow ( The Watcher in the Water )
2x Light of Valinor ( Foundations of Stone )
3x Silver Harp ( The Treachery of Rhudaur )
3x Unexpected Courage ( Core Set )
1x Asfaloth ( Foundations of Stone )
3x Protector of Lórien ( Core Set )
1x Wingfoot ( The Nin-in-Eilph )
2x Song of Battle ( The Dead Marshes )
2x Song of Kings ( The Hunt for Gollum )
2x Song of Wisdom ( Conflict at the Carrock )
Events (21)
3x A Test of Will ( Core Set )
3x Dwarven Tomb ( Core Set )
3x Elrond's Counsel ( The Watcher in the Water )
3x Elven-light ( The Dread Realm )
3x Fair and Perilous ( Across the Ettenmoors )
3x Daeron's Runes ( Foundations of Stone )
3x Deep Knowledge ( The Voice of Isengard )

Deck built with Rivendell Councilroom

I have used this deck on multiplayer games and one times Solo.

This deck use Elven spear for another discard/boost/draw mechanic with Elven-light and Stewart of Gondor for ressource generation.
With Stewart of Gondor & Arwen (ressource generation) / Protector of Lorien & Elven Spear (Discard for boost) / Elven-Light (Draw), you could each turn give +6 on a statistic of your choice and draw 6 cards.
The drawed cards could be used for more boost if needed.

With Fair and Perilous/Protectore of Lorien and/or Elven Spears, i can quickly boost Haldir to a total of 10-12 attacks, regulary 14-16 attacks and some times 20 attacks.

I play Dwarven tombs to replay Fair and Perillous, some untap effect (Unexpected courage) for multiple strong attacks with Haldir and some Silver Harp for free boost.
I have finally added draw effect from lore sphere and master of forge for fetching important attachments.

This deck have oneshot, with Haldir of Lorien, a Hill Troll, the Lich King and some other strong ennemies.
When needed, i have used it for strong questing with protector of Lorien. At last quest step, i can easily quest for 17 willpower.
With the strong draw capacity, the deck is steady.

You never fail to find cool combos with newer cards 13nrv!

Thanks for this, I'll be adding protector of lorien to my ranged deck :)

Sounds like it could use some help on Defense for solo but can be pretty awesome in multiplayer if you let the other players take the enemies. Personally, I think the Dunedain attachments would have been nicer due to their permanence vs needing to keep up the discard shenanigans, but the use of Elven Light also help draw cards too, so the impermanent discard stuff looks quite good as well.

This is a really nice concept 13nrv. I think I will try it with Spirit Merry to keep my threat low enough to never engage...

One shot is nice, but in solo... how will Haldir one shot before the enemy attacks?

His action can only be used if you not engage an enemy.

@Noccus

Thanks for your feedback and Glad to give you some idea.

@joezim007

For solo, i have done some modifications like adding some Feint instead of Rivendell bow. But like you said, we can add some defense stuff : A Burning Brand and Cloak of Lorien.

@Seastan

Thanks.

I have also think about your modification to this deck. You will replace Arwen or Glorfindel spirit by Merry spirit ?

I can not wait to see your modification and maybe a video ?

@JanB

My threat is low. Many enemies will stay in staging area and i do the oneshot in the staging area. As said above, these deck is mainly made for Multiplayers game. So other player will make engagement.

I have beaten A journey along Anduin with this deck (Solo). Quickly two troll in staging area and turn one an ennemy engage me.

I have used Protector of Lorien to defend the attack and kill him after.

One hill troll has been killed in Staging.

Next turn, i have defended the second with Haldir thanks to protector of lorien. After attacks, i kill the second Hill troll with Glorfindel spirit (with a rivendell Blade) and Haldir with Fair and Perilous + Elven Spear.

The proposition made by Seastan (adding Merry spirit) will be good for solo game. With Merry spirit, you can maintain your threat very low and no ennemy will engage.

Interesting concept. Note that Protector of Lorien got errata'd to say 'limit 3 times per turn'.

Was wondering how this hadn't been brought up yet.

Overall it is a cool concept and could work gangbusters at times or for particular quests.

Isn't it 3 times per phase?

That said, it works wonders with Elven Light. You can discard Light over and over again to Protector of Lorien each phase, making it possible to liquidate your entire resource pool into cards if you want. No more floating a ton of resources!

Yes, Protector of Lorien is limit at 3 times per phase.

Elven Spear is also limit at 3 times per phase.

With these two discard attachments, i have a good capacity of questing (even if the quest is siege or battle) and then use these attachment in combat phase.

With 5 spirit resource per turn (Stewart of Gondor and Arwen), i can draw 5 cards per turn. I can use these card for more boost if needed.
