Magic Wrench

By GM Hooly, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

My Tech PC came to me today and asked if she could fit a micro-repulsor to her wrench. She's got a favour wrench and she often uses it an an improvised weapon. Now I asked her why she wanted to add the repulsor, and she replied, "So I can throw it at people, hit them, then activate a remote, and make it fly back to me."

OK, so any thoughts of how to make this happen?

In Keeping the Peace, there is an attachment called "Magnetic Weapon Tether" that requires 1 HP and costs 250$. It gives the ability to recover weapon as an incidental if engaged with weapon. It also has a mod option for Quick Draw.

Yeah, probably use the Magnetic Weapon Tether as a baseline.

As for using the weapon offensively, I'd say it'd operate under Ranged (Light), with a range of Short, and that the attacker would need to spend 2 Advantage in order to properly time the attachment to make it return to their hand. Yes, Thor makes the trick look easy with Mjolnir, but he's got a hefty dose of Asgardian magitech working on his behalf.

And a weapon that has a mind of its own to decide if it should even be handled by someone.

Well, there is that software bug that makes it occasionally decide that someone is close enough to Thor to work.

What software bug is that?

Magic wrench? Who looks at a wrench and says "Oooh, this could be a bit more magic!"

That was something I was discussing with the player :)

"He whomever holds this hammer, if he be worthy..."

In reality we have now got mini drones with camera mounts that can be thrown out in front of you. They will self stabilise and take a photo before returning to you.

So Star Wars has much denser computing power, thus much smaller for the same computing power. There is also much denser energy storage, therefore smaller for the same amount of storage. And lastly there is Anti-Gravity technology.

Combine all this with a Hydrospanner in the hands of a creative PC and you have a spanner that when thrown returns to you without a physical tether or equipment in your own hands. But the Magnetic tether would work fine as well, just depends on the PC's choice.
