Hey guys one of the complaints I got from one of my players was that he felt I was giving away credits too easily the other members of my group haven't made a complaint about it but that may be because they don't wanna feel rude or just don't care. So I was wondering how much and how often should I give out credits.
Credits: How much is to much
To give you perspective I got a character who has been playing for 3 years (beta of eote), every 2 weeks for 5-6 hours a session. Just today he spent everything he had for a pawnshop on a space station. Total after upgrades 90k.
I don't give out credits as much as I give out equipment. They always tend to find the things they need, not so much what they want. Again this was what was left that he had saved up. He's spent around 10k in equipment and living expenses. They had to sell the ship. Hard times.
It really depends on what the focus of your campaign is. If its a Firefly style of campaign, where every credit has to be carefully earned and hoarded, the player might have some cause for complaint.
If that's not a major theme in your campaign, it really shouldn't matter to the player. The assumption ought to be that if you're giving them credits, and the possibility to spend it, they're going to have need of the resulting hardware somewhere down the line...
Like Bladehate said, it's up to how you are running your game. At first I wasn't giving away very many credits and having the PC's find more gear, but they let me know that they really wanted to find some good stuff then upgrade it and have money on hand to upgrade/buy new stuff as well. They were much more money driven than some so I adjusted accordingly.
By the end of my campaign the group had a total of about 1.3 million credits, but a majority of that was from boosting the Jewel of Yavin and properly hacking the bank to obtain the auction money as well. Over the course of the year-long campaign they bought and upgraded their weapons, got a new ship, and bought some property to make a small settlement on Ryloth. After all was said and done they probably had earned just under 2 million over the year, but I also made EVERYTHING cost money, want to do an underworld check to find a blackmarket dealer? Well you're gonna have to bribe the guy if you get a success...Want to do a job that requires you have a industrial landspeeder available for the getaway? You're gonna have to either buy one or steal one (and then accept any consequences that happen)...
Ask your group how they want to play, if it's more "Firefly-esque" then give them less and don't go crazy on making them spend it, if they want to own their own Super Star Destroyer then give them a decent amount, but make everything cost something!
It's a good thing to remember in ANH Obi-Wan offered Han about 20,000 in that 2,000 now and 18,000 on safe delivery of two people, two droids and no questions asked which was back in '78!
Today I suspect they would have had to offer 10 times that much IF the setting accommodated that shift in economics but that's something you do control!
It really doesn't have to be all money, barter often makes it easier if you carried something they wanted or valued so trying to obtain the second piece of that map from the Jedi Archives might require you to obtain some priceless Alderaanian vases that cannot be replicated as the process was lost well before that world was blown up, but it will allow you to copy their piece of the map whilst you haggle over its price as you KNOW the Empire won't let you walk out with it IF they know you're carrying it!
Just as well you know the current owner isn't interested in playing fair when he takes his prize back to his private vault so you can a hour later learn exactly where your prize is, what defences and where to park your airspeeder after it blows a hole in the wall so you can ****** it if your attempted copying failed to work...
Still if it does setting it off does make for a good diversion after all if they're thinking the burglars are still in the city and not aboard their freighter heading off planet that gives you more time to shake off their inevitable pursuit doesn't it?
Sorry thinking too much on this!
Thanks for the suggestions particularly to Ender and Copper
