The ugliest Canon ship Ever

By patox, in X-Wing

And here I came all this way thinking we were having a discussion about the Kwing.

While not canon, i think the ugliest ship award still goes to the e-wing.

So, when wave 4 just came out, I was playing a game at my local store with a friend, testing out the new Ewings which I won two of! (Went to a lot of AoA tournies) I was so excited to see Corran, a childhood favourite, on the board in front of me. I was doing pretty good, and we were having a fun game when a kid, probably around 12 comes along. He asks who's winning, and I say I am. He replies with

"Oh, you should be losing."

"Why?"

"Because your ship's so ugly it should make to you too sad to win."

My friend and I both agreed I should take 1 burn damage for that.

Yeah, that dorsal cannon is ugly and impractical. How do you even get into the **** thing?!?

That is stupid. There is no way a competent military would ever use such a terrible design (I guess that's why it's a rebel ship). Whomever came up with the E-Wing design should be ashamed of themselves. If they so desperately wanted a third cannon on the damned thing they should have mounted it on the chin.

Hopefully they will release Corran Horn in an X-Wing with the inevitable Rebel Veterans pack and we can all just pretend the E-Wing never happened.

I can see this as an Epic Scum ship. We settle for scaled down versions of things all the time, even with epic ships!

I see no reason why this can't be an Epic Scum ship piloted by Han and Chewie. It would only need to be as big as a raider or cr-90.

I'd buy the hell outta this thing? What the heck is it called? I'm gonna start one of those things like the Gunboat.

Give us the thing! Thing for Scum Epic Representative!

All Hail Thing!

Eravana! It's called the Eravana, a Baleen class super freighter. She never enters atmo, the big lass. So she's exactly like a Teladi ship!

All hail the Baleen!

I love it - though I highly doubt we'll ever see it in X-Wing or Armada. It's a freighter, and in real life they never went well in combat, even with guns. If you bought it (on it's own, at least), you'd just be paying for your opponent's victory.

Not everything of use in these games is guns.

So a force multiplier that doesn't kill things, but helps buddies kill things in subtle ways?

I'd be all over that.

I like that thing.

Looks like it came from the Alien universe

Pretty much all of the ships and vehicles in the new movie that aren't based on preexisting designs (line x wings and tie fighters) are really, really boring, just flying boxes.

The lack of any seriously cool NEW ships is one of my biggest disappointments with TFA.

The really damned *INFURIATING* thing about that is...if you get a chance to stop in your local Barnes & Noble or other bookstore, sometime, check out "The Art of the Force Awakens" book.

It is mind blowing what kind of awesome designs were being considered in pre-production, and ultimately rejected as being not identifiable enough for the mass market. I mean, for real, there is some seriously cool evolutions of existing designs in that book - stunning work.

The Hounds tooth does look like a flying-brick-turd though.

Why, I oughta...

US Army begs to differ. :D E-Wing is horrible though. You can tell it was some fan doodle thing. The engines don't fire through the centre of mass, meaning it would fly in an uncontrollable spiral. But this is a sin shared by many, many SF ships.

Why, I oughta...

...examine a thunderhawk gunship that's been painted brown, and realize they are the same thing?

... make a custom pilot card for Bono out of U2?

Ugliest ship we have a model for is without a doubt the flying half brick known as the 'Hounds Tooth'

I like it. It is beautiful - for a brick.

Baleen for Scum Epic President!

Ugliness = not Imperial.

Star Galleon.

Lancer Frigate

Scimitar Bomber (ok, I kinda like this one).

TIE Punisher

Nebulon B Frigate (I like these too).

Carrack Cruiser (I like these but come on...)

Arguable the Delta Class Escort shuttle (I like and own these).

This Said: Anything by Cygnus Spaceworks.

The DX-9

Most TIE's.

Star Destroyers, from raider up.

ARGH KITTENS!!!

The Star Galleon looks like a turkey just waiting to be carved up. Which is probably what happened whenever it didn't have an adequate escort.

And outside of TIE fighter and associated games I've never seen Imperial Nebulon Bs, just references for them. This has led me to believe they were actually a design dating from the Clone Wars and may have been CIS, later used by the Empire in outlying regions, perhaps. Rebels using old surplus CIS ships is practically canon and it makes much more sense than the empire manufacturing such a ship just for the rebels to steal them wholesale.

Neb-B in oldcanon was an Imperial escort ship that rebels kept stealing/hijacking/defecting etc.

I'm so used to seeing Imp neb B's and B2s that I can't even consider them in my mind as non-imperial.

That, and canonically it's still a KDY ship. Sienar, Cygnus and KDY all contracted for the Imperial Navy.

It's not a direct, but for me it's good enough.

Action: once per round you may swallow one small or large base ship at range 1. Treat that ship as destroyed

Omnomnomnom...

I like this freighter... 0% style, 100% function.

So ugly.

Fair reminder that star wars ships are conventionally speaking, ugly.

They're great for it.

OK, Baleen is a whale, so that's why it's baleen class I guess.

Is the hound's tooth considered canon? If so, it definitely takes it for ugliest. It's weird. It almost looks like slave 1 collided with the back half and what's left is a tangled mess of the two.

I like ships that "feel" real. I realize all of this is fantasy, but when you throw in something ridiculous like the dorsal cannon on a e-wing, it really ruins and semblance of believability for me. industrial design for movies should have some engineering background because it helps to set the atmosphere for the movie as a whole. that's why great examples (Like the loader from aliens) Feel real. they are grimy, it looks like what it does, etc.

One of the reasons the original trilogy was so good is that it felt real in that sense. perfect? no, but weathered ships, ground crew equipment, and all the rest really drew me in and made it all seem much more real than fake CGI junk that is too clean.

my 2 cents. Also, as much as I love the falcon, no one in their right mind would design or fly an asymmetrical ship like that or the bwing. A hard left barrel roll, would cause you to black out from the positive vertical Gs, among other things.

Here's one canon ship that will probably never hit a gaming tabletop ever.

At least it's not a Space Dong.

Or a Starwing. (hi Lackwit! :D )

I'm not 100% on this, but Bossk is canon and I don't think they've removed any of the extra universe stuff from things that were in the movies. So, kinda?

That said, I love the Hound's tooth so much. Stapler win.

Luckily the grand tradition with Lucasfilm these days is "everything will get used eventually." The new Inquisitors in Rebels came from some of those sketches, and if you look at the castoffs from the previous movies, the designs saw the light of day throughout the CW and Rebels series.

It shows up in The Clone Wars (CG) at its now reduced size, so yup it is.

I don't really understand this... the engines especially on the FFG model are bloody amazing (and by extension the ones on the Khiraxz). It is a little plain on the top, but flat-out ugly I just don't see.

Will be interesting to see the re-paint in Rebel Veterans... mine went with gold, dark blue, and white stripes.

Why would it be on the table top when it is a table?

Is that a car in column 1 row 3?

Ford Falcon?
