Raider - To buy or not to buy one

By Dalcor, in X-Wing

In shorts I realy like the Raider...

And I dont realy like the prize,

Moreover I like the Raider, I dont use the cards as Palpatine, Tarkin, Pilots and two of the advanced/TIEx sets... Which I would probably try to offer to my friends or local players (or anybody).

Question is. What is the gaming with the big ship. Is it worthy of the money? Is that fun, or just moving one straight shooting from canons untill all oponents are down. Is it worth to play lets say scenarion for normal (small) ships - fighters - to hunt the Raider or it is needed to have Huge vs Huge?

Thanks for comments

Raider is like the CR-90 only way better, but you pretty much only want it for corvette vs. corvette games.

If you haven't played, how would you know if you want to get rid of the cards yet? They're pretty useful.

I've had fun with my Raider vs CR90, it's a lot more to it than just move and fire. You can give extra actions to your allies, share target locks with the right cards, etc.

Well, I know they are usefull, but I will never use them, as I do not wish to collect other models and I will not play competitive for need to buy new and new models. So I new I will never use pilots /and I already have Juno at home/ and Palpatine with Tarkin just because I dont like them as SW characters and finnaly I (will) have only two advanced, so two sets shold be given away...

Will you fly it?

If you have people to run epic with then get it.

Otherwise you can live without

I think its a nice shelf piece, if anything else, that said, I had to send mine back due to a bent solar panels....still waiting for it to be sent back...

If you have to ask then the answer is no. Unless your one of the 1 in a 1000 fans that is into epic then your going to use it as a cool shelf piece. Nothing wrong with that I have all the epic ships out on display and they look cool. But that's it.

I should add they make fun obstacles in casual play. Cool to fight around the big ships in the smaller dogfighters. That's the best use for them. If your real industrious and good with your hands use LED lights in the engines and the bridge of the ship for extra cool factor.

Huge ships come with campaigns or scenarios that are a blast to play. IMO they radically change the face of the game. There's a shift from tactical to the strategic thinking which I like. The cards you get, if I can quote Spock, are "sauce for the goose". They're just a bonus. As is the added small based ship.

If you tire of the 100 pt death match or just want to play several games with some continuity you have to try an Epic. There's also an added benefit. There's a certain perverse enjoyment to ramming a small or large ship and destroying it. Something that you don't get in a standard death match.

It all boils down to do you want to spend the money to pickup a huge ship and add another facet to the game. Only you can answer that question.

Corvette can destroy the raider - or vice versa - It's really an interesting geometry problem, all angle of attack and mounted weapons base. Single turbolasers, ion cannon batteries - they really affect huge ships. You can outfit either the corvette or the raider as anti fighter or anti capital - then it's up to getting the enemy in as many of your firing arcs as possible while managing energy.

I plan to pick one up later this week. I need something to fight the corvette.

I don't regret my purchase at all! Good cards that come with it and the model is pretty cool and really enhances the Imperial Fleet. Expecting it to perform well in Epic... but having to wait a little bit for that...

The Huntress still has yet to get a game in, but suuure looks pretty.

and I'll get games in eventually, when my current gaming life gets more stable.

I haven't gotten to run it against the CR90 yet, but vs. a Rebel fighter plus Falcon list, it was amazingly brutal.

I'm sure there are more than 1 out of every 1000 X-wing players that like Epic or Cinematic. I'd say those numbers are a gross underestimate.

To me, I ask if you will take the time to find players to play with the big ships? No one played with them in my area, but whenever I want to, I don't really find a shortage of people to play with. I'm usually the one to ask about it, but there are a lot of people that either want to try it out or want to bring out their big ships. It's just a matter of going out and looking for the players. If you have enough ships to field both sides then it's even easier to find players. You just need to find someone who wants to. I've found it easier to pull in new players when you put big ships on the table and run a straight forward match (with mostly generics for ease of play).
