*SPOILERS* "Leading a fleet and avenging an old friend" Ep8 Speculation

By TheMOELANDER, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Interesting things are coming out from people who are licensees for the new Star Wars products coming down the pipeline. We talked about this on the podcast but it is late coming out today, so I’ll put it here. They’re being told “Lando is likely to return in Star Wars: Episode VIII to avenge a friend and lead a fleet.” If it goes that way, it makes sense as we know the Resistance Fleet is destroyed in VII and there is a friend to avenge.

That is actually quite interesting. It seems ol' Lando stuck with the military, or maybe he is an official in the new republic, or he gathered the smuggler's fleet (a concept borrowed straight from the Thrawn trilogy if so) or, or, or...

There are so many possibilities I'd liek to hear what you guys tink about this rumour.

Here are my interpretations:

  1. Lando is an official in the Republic. With a cushy administrative job for the war hero, the destroyer of the second Death Star tried to convince the Republic to take a more active stance against the First Order. He was away from the Hosnian system to gather support somewhere else and now climbed up the ranks big time: He's the new supreme chancelor (or whatever the NR is calling their head-of-state) and he's gathering all that he can get.
  2. Lando was an official as stated above, but he was disgusted with the stance of the NR towards the FO. So he took off and looked for support for the Resistance, which is also the reason, why he isn't at their base in Ep7. He comes back with the smugglers's fleet, because they see the threat in the FO.
  3. Lando went back to Bespin after the battle of Endor. He kept good contact with the old heroes and when he hears Han had been offed by his offspring (pun intended) he gets mad, gathers all the old friends of Han and joins them together in a smuggler's alliance to join the resistance, giving them much needed firepower.

What are your thoughts what Lando will do, based on those words above.

CAVEAT though! Those words come from the merchandisers, especiall the toy merchandisers. They got one Calrissian fact wrong in the past!

Where was the Resistance fleet destroyed again?

And did they even have a fleet other than the squadron of x-wings they sent after sk base?

Iguess that's been a misremember by them. The Republic fleet (or at least a big chunk of it) was seemingly destroyed in that Starkiller blast taking out the hosnian system. Huxtler says in his Nazi speech, that they are going to destroy the republic and their fleet.

The Republic fleet was damaged not the Resistance fleet.

There were 6-7 X-wings at the end of the Starkiller battle and someone in the Resistance war room said that was half their fleet, so the Resistance has a fleet of 6-7 X-wings...

I have a bad feeling about this :D

If you're looking for it, you can see several large ships get taken out by (presumably) Hosnian

Prime when it explodes. Bottom left of the screen.

I think that Lando and Leia are going to get something up and running against the first order together to avenge Han.

Lando was a general at the end of Ep. VI, so it's not implausible that he got a high ranking Republic position. Although, I bet he still travels to/ oversees things on Bespin now it's not occupied. Betting that's where he was when the first order started getting itchy trigger fingers......

The Resistance does have at least some capital ships according to the canon short story anthology Before the Awakening including Home One and at least one other MC80. They just weren't at Starkiller base (According to a poster on another forum originally there was going to be a capital ship battle over Starkiller Base but it was cut so no one would ask why the resistance capships weren't attacking the oscillator. :( )

And the way Ackbar uses the term fleet during the battle he could easily be referring just to the ships on the mission not the entire Resistance space force.

It makes too much sense that Lando would have charmed/weaseled his way into a cushy New Republic government position.

I agree, that theory is also my favourite. Also he can now boast with an even bigger battle he's a hero of.

Which small republic agency/government bureau doesn't want to serve under a war hero?

besides... the fleets (both sides) will be exactly the size they need to be in order to be compelling and visually interesting. If they want a big space battle, then you'll get a big space battle. If they want to tell the story of a small ragtag group, then there you go...

This thread is supposed to talk about Lando's possible involvement in Episode VIII

The problem is, your source of rumor on Lando is basing their rumor on rumors from before the film that have been debunked now that the film is out.

And even in one of the links, sooo many of their guesses are wrong about TFA that it's not worth considering their opinions on further speculation.

This time you have gone too far!

Ah, I didn't realize that. I found the link to the making star wars page in anothe list about Episode 8 facts, which was dated this year. So I guessed it was viable.

Too bad, though.
