new HWK-290

By Ruakar, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Ok, i admit the community's overwhelming love for the 1000 sparked my interest.. though my intent today was to do a freighter for an upcoming game i am hosting.... I had to stop and spend the last hour coming up with my own version of what a 1000 might look like. I know everyone has their own opinions, so please understand this is just my interpretation of what i have seen from the stats (i know many of you may have wanted it to be bigger) . When i do an interior i can show you why i made it the size i did (290 to 1000 jumped from Silhouette 3 - 4) . I have some ideas for some cool cargo/living areas that use the available space. I might make two actually. One that is for a group on the go, and one for a hot rod-esk cargo vessel.

Looks fine to me...

You work remarkably fast

For a moment I was really worried, as I am the proud owner of a HWK with an luxary seatie, which makes me wonder where everything fits...

Then, I remembered that my ship was a HWK-1000 and that meant to be huge, so I can be a smug fellow about my character owning one of very few! XD

I was just wondering what new ship i was going to do today. I think that the 1000 is in Fly Casual isnt it? Im afraid i haven't gotten that book yet, how big do they say it is?

I'm probably wrong but I was under the impression that the HWK-290 was 29 meters long. So, using the same for its larger cousin, The HWK-1000 would be 100 meters long.

100 meters is pretty excessive. Even the Gozanti (Sil 5) is around 64 meters long. I would put the HWK-1000 around the same length as the YT-1300, 35 meters roughly. It's just a lot more narrow, so it has reduced overall space. Though it's probably around twice the 290's width. Overall square footage is probably a bit less then the YT-2000's. That's my interpretation anyway.

Well, enough for today.. i changed plans to do a little HWK-1000 work. I did 1 1/2 Interiors for it. one utilitarian and one with a lounge option, that same one has a second Navigational seat in the cockpit. Later i will paint the hull for it.

As to 100 meters.. i also think that is excessive. Looking at the stats, it only goes up 2 extra passengers than the 290 and encumbrance from 75 to 100, to me that says its roughly 1/4 bigger. If you look at my previous post and consider length and with of the 290 and the 1000, the over all VOLUME is about 1/4 bigger.

You are amazing, thank you, with talent like yours you could go professional. I know this game does need more ship layouts, keep up to good work.

These maps are awesome, well done. Impressive, most impressive.

Very well done, again. If you wanted to artificially increase the length of the 1000, you could add in another cabin/room with bunks, and declare them as single berths.

One thing I'm not sure I understand is the zig-zag corridor... it appears to take up more space than just a straight corridor would.

Woh! This is awesome! You did a great job! Makes me super happy, I love this ship and the Dark Forces series.

spectacular work, Ruakar! Some really nice effects here. I'd be really interested in seeing your method if you ever felt like recording one of your sessions? ;)

I have only one thing recorded... ever.. I will post it. This video time lapse is for an unrelated character and is only the line work and color. not the concepting sadly, sorry.

I paint very loosely (very rough) very much like sculpting, chipping away at the shape, then when i have most of my ideas worked out i do line work and solid color over the concept to clean it up. Doing ships is pretty much the same. I will try and record my next ship which might be that citadel cruiser. or the YT-2400 i started.. The YT was my very first, and I got this far before deciding to do it differently. I could record that as i go back over it.

These are absolutely stunning. As an aside, does it seem odd to anyone else that the HWkK-290 is a light freighter? If I were shipping some goods across the galaxy, I would definitely not hire a ship that has, like, 30 cubic feet of storage space.

Based on the descriptions in books and online, and the layouts here, I'd call it a "courier ship" or a "package freighter".

It's the kind of ship you hire when a small package (or a person) absolutely, positively has to be there overnight.

Yavin Prime 2 day shipping?

I though I had spotted a YT-2400 in a hagar bay in your Mos Espa base... I was wondering if you'd map that one too.

When I RE-DO the yt-2400, i will make a dedicated post to that ship, but my very first attempt at it is on page two of this topic. :)

Got some time to finish the 1000 today. I chose to do something a little different with the color and make it a little more distinct.

This looks absolutely plausible for the interior. Great work. Also the slightly bigger "belly" and the longer "beak" give this ship a very unique look, as well as the longer thrusters. Great work!

See.. I would have gone with Alderaan.com for the joke.

Well, Amazon started out as Cadabra, which was apparently too close to "cadaver" so it got rebranded. After the Death Star, maybe a similar train of thought got Space Bezos (that's close enough to a Star Wars name as it is, I'll just leave it) to change it. I was just trying to think of a jungle-type place, and Yavin jumped to mind.

You know, now that we're talking about it... I've been told I overthink things sometimes.

Very well done. Are you thinking of doing a Citadel? That's a wonderful ship.

I am actually.. I have let it simmer in thought for a couple of days as i get caught up on my character drawings. It could also replace the "old Freighter" ship that i had started that i need for an upcoming game with my players. I have also been meaning to ask. Do many people here play online? My friends are all over the world so we play on Roll 20's site.

I play locally, but this is something every GM needs, ship layouts, in my upcoming campaign they are going to get a shot at a hawk 1000 now i can print it out and allow the players to get a feel for their new ship.
