new HWK-290

By Ruakar, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

my first post.. heh.

So I have been playing Edge of the Empire for about a year as GM now. Recently i had to destroy a players ship.. It was a head hunter and sadly lacking in a hyperdrive as most of you would know. To make up for such a malicious attack on player property I had to make it up some how. Deep in the bowls of a large space station there was a vault. and inside was a HWK-290 Vornskr

I thought of sharing the art work i had done for the Vornskr. It was inspired by some of the Edge of the Empire community members here and their love for the ship. As to the scale issue i keep reading about. (seems a hot topic in the past) This is my interpretation of the scale from what i remember from the Moldy Crow because i played the crap out of Dark forces.

Next to a Lambda i did for a different session we had.

dude.

Nice artwork...

Fantastic...

Though for some reason the first thing I envisioned was how horrible a mechanical failure of the retractable head would be....

That really puts the internal size of the HWK-290 into perspective, and makes me wonder why so many recommend it as a "team ship" for a group of PCs...

truly superb

what program(s) did you use?

Because it has the stat that allow it to act as a somewhat forgiving heavy starfighter almost right out of the box. Just add weapons and you're ready to go.

Awesome

I think it's the best layout for the HWK-290 I ever saw...

I'm sure gonna use it for my campaign.
Thanks for the great work.

Just photoshop.

As to a team ship... originally i thought it was quite small myself. but with 2/3 folding seats, some space to put a few more if you want to crowd the cockpit, a double bunk in the mid section then a roughly 6" 8" ish cargo hold (which is probably going to be converted into some kind of containment cell knowing the player i made it for) i can see it functioning a lot like its the Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk of star wars... in those terms it becomes a lot cooler and more fierce to me, if a little close quartered. It would make an Incredible small strike vessel for some Rebels or perhaps a group of Rodian pirates Kidnapping an Ambassador in a campaign . :)

I see the utility.

However, just as you wouldn't live out of a UH-60 Blackhawk... let's just say that your entire team would have to get along VERY well to operate out of a 290 for months on end...

EDIT: looking at it again, I'm somewhat reminded of the space and crew considerations on a WW2 submarine. So, if a group of characters is OK hot-bunking and living within inches of each other, then I guess they'd be OK with the 290. :D

I dont disagree at all! I suggest getting a really hot co-pilot like Kyle Katarn did and call it done there. :)

For a moment I was really worried, as I am the proud owner of a HWK with an luxary seatie, which makes me wonder where everything fits...

Then, I remembered that my ship was a HWK-1000 and that meant to be huge, so I can be a smug fellow about my character owning one of very few! XD

Very well done! If i recall, the hwk-290 is shorter than the lambda shuttle. Going by x-wing. It really is a tiny ship.

Is there any chance for a copy of the image without the name?

Excellent work.

I was just wondering what new ship i was going to do today. I think that the 1000 is in Fly Casual isnt it? Im afraid i haven't gotten that book yet, how big do they say it is?

I've think that a pair of HWK-290s would be great "team ships" for a group of PCs.

Yes Fly Casual. I don't recall a specific length though. (away from my books)

Checking my spreadsheet it has nearly the same statistics other than being silhouette 4 instead of 3, 2 additional passengers and 25 additional encumbrance.

As I recall the drawing in the book showed it as having nearly the same basic shape. Perhaps the "nose" was thicker/ more hooked.

Looks to me like you have a lot of artistic license for it.

Ive yet to see a good version of the citadel cruiser.

Agree that a pair of HWK-290s would be a very effective combo. Especially considering the amount of flexibility that the ship brings for a Sil3.

Also agree that there is no real good depiction of the Citadel Cruiser.

To be honest I imagine it being a very similar ship, with same layout, just bigger and perhaps a little more accommodation. Unfortunately unlike Kyle Tobin is sharing his with an street kid apprentice! So the luxury suite the hutt gifted to him for saving the smugglers moon is the compensation for the long flights. Xd well, that and he stole the ship from a hutts skyscraper vault, but that's another story for another time.

Also has a hyperdrive 1, I believe the standard hwk is a hyperdrive 2, though I don't have books at hand. Funnily enough the party has a hwk-290 also among other ships, so the double hwk arrangement is definitely possible! (Though, considering that hwk also once belonged to Tobin, I imagine my character won't allow anyone else aboard otherwise he would never get the Gands smell out of the luxury seating! Bahahahah)

In short, it's probably similar enough to a standard hwk to not warrant another map, though my character has modified his ship particularly to be more open plan, with a jazzi suite, a personal armoury (he's a gadgeteer with 4 sets up armour, 12 guns a staff and lightsaber and a sith artifact.) and a impromptu workshop in the cargo hold at the back. Basically, since the rest of the crew has two ships and he took this one solo, he's fitted it out as a mobile home as his cover story as a bounty hunter.

What you have to take into consideration with the HWK-290 is that it handles really well. Almost like a X-wing. And you have a lot of hardpoints to waste on that baby.

But perhaps the biggest plus: It bein Silhouette 3 means it can fit into a Silhouette 5 retrofitted hangar bay. So your Action VI can hold a HWK gunboat...

Think about it!

I already started a project for today that i need for an upcoming game but i plan to be finish it soon.. I looked up the Citadel Cruiser and the HWK-1000, either of them seem like they would be fun to do next.

Well done!

You can do a search on these forums and you will quite a few posts on setups for the HWK-290.

General consensus is that, if you have the resources, the HWK-290 is the best Sil3 currently in the game.

I would love to see a HWK-1000 done!

one of the most expensive and rare light freighters in the galaxy if it's stats and write up are to be believed.

It pretty much is a larger HWK-290 which was created due to the contention as to the size of the HWK-290 being different depending on sources. The solution; there are two HWK type ships, one is large, one is small, the smaller is the 290, and the larger is the 1000.

Might as well take the windows out completely at that point...
