New Hope Level Play?

By tenchi2a, in Game Masters

To start off I would like to say that Knights level play Is the wrong name, it should be New Hope level play.

I say this because IMHO that is what FFG was going for here.

This name gives the Idea that you could make a Jedi with this rule, but in true it does make an effective Episode 4 starting Character.

IMO

example:

Han: Smuggler:this one is hard maybe a scoundrel or a charmer could be some gunslinger mixed in.

Chewy: Smuggler:Pilot

Leia: Diplomat: Ambassador with Recruit

Luke: One of the F&D trees to me either Warrior: Starfighter or Guardian: don't know ?

3PO: Not sure here (In truth does not do much)

R2: Technician: either a Slicer or a Mechanic or Both.

Ben Kenobi: Group Mentor / Nemesis where need

you can agree or disagree with the career:Spec choices, but overall this seems to me to be what the point of the Knight level play is.

Its so open to interpretation making posts about it will accomplish little more than starting fights.

You can make ANH characters at starter, or at Knight, or even higher. It all comes down to what you think you saw the characters do and what you think the characters need to do it.

(Sarcastic, in case anyone wants to use my joke to start a fight.)

1. So what your saying is if I have an opinion keep it to myself ?

2. You missed the point of this post. I was stating that Knight-Level play was an attempt to capture the feel of the first movie and not to show the power of a Jedi Knight.

First of all, whether all the protagonists of the film start with the same level of experience is disputable by itself. Han and Chewie, I can concede them that amount of experience. But Luke, he's a 17 year old moisture farmer, who hasn't been far from home or even had a formal education yet.

Then, I suppose it a little far-fetched an assumption, that the main reason for the introduction of the knight level had been the recreatability of any film characters.

But, I do agree with you, that knight level isn't a very well conceived appellation for a character of slightly advanced experience.

I'd be wary of reading too much into it, or feeling constrained *at all* by FFG's suggestion. First, the "150" number is arbitrary; and second, the title "Knight" is pure marketing. I doubt capturing their feel of the first movie was their intention at all, especially given the history of the core releases: they always talked about EotE being linked to E4, AoR being linked to E5, and F&D being linked to E6.

I'd have preferred it if they'd had a section on "advanced level play", which would basically: encourage GMs to feel free to award the players extra XP after chargen if they want; had some notes on how to balance the PC's power and the kinds of opposition they might face given a certain amount of extra XP; provide the Knight level as an example, without using that title. That would have been far more useful than a single formalized "level".

By all means state your opinion. This particular one has just come up before and turned into a flame war. Everyone has a different opinion of what you need to make a movie character, or even a "Jedi." Some are reasonable observations....many are just fanboys freaking out.
