Geronimo! -or- Is it time to make an exit strategy?

By Futant420, in X-Wing

I don't have a complete collection yet, but I do buy ships just for that one card I need for a killer list.

As for balance in the collection, you can always artificially limit your collection whenever you choose. Say, for example, you'll only play with waves 1-3 for a month. Or say OT ships only. I'm going to keep plugging away at this game for as long as possible. I don't see an end in sight.

There is no way I would go all in on X-Wing 2.0. Buying another huge collection of the same ships for new cards and rules is ridiculous and I simply wouldn't do that.

I enjoy the game as it is and it doesn't need a complete revision. I could however see Asmodee North America CEO Christian Peterson pushing for a X Wing 2.0 though as it would increase their bottom line and his bonus check.

Why buy anything? If they come out with a 2.0 the rules will be available online. Some builder will have the updates included, so you can just print your lists! Easy-peasy! No need to buy anything except new ships that you dont already have!

Yes that is what I would do. Assuming I like the 2nd edition rules. FFG usually does a good job of going from 1st to 2nd editions of games in terms of rules revisions. But you never know they could pull a move like Hasbro did with D&D. Hasbro wanted to maximize profits so a TOTAL revision of the rules meant you had to repurchase everything literally. They even blew up the Forgotten Realms to help sell their new Forgotten Realms book. They were going for maximum profit but instead ended up printing 3rd edition books again to try to get some sales.

I was done back at wave four or five... Whenever the Defender came out. No scum. Factions have unique feel and I recognize the vast majority of the ships. Definitely not a "Have to have everything!" type of collector;)

Blew up the Forgotten Realms? Wow, that sounds familiar. I had no idea there had been such a high profile precedent. Minus 1 nerd points for me. :(

As much as I hate to say it, a reboot might be in X-Wings best interest. Just not now, or any time soon. Two more movies to go yet, plus video games, comics, and books, not to mention TV shows and spin-off movies, I think there is barrels of ships and upgrades left in Original X-Wing . We may have to wait a while and let the creative juices percolate, but I have faith. Perhaps once the franchise has gone back into hibernation, then it will be time for X-Wing 2.0.

The core of this discussion is 'value'. Not of the dollars and cents kind but what we (consumers and players) see value in. Value is subjective and measures differently within consumer groups.

Personally, I see no value in the EU. It does not interest me in the slightest, nor does Rebels, comics, etc. I have the ships that add value to my interests and probably won't buy any more. Others place their value on different things. Are they wrong? Am I wrong?

FFG will produce product until we, the consumer, place less value in their product than the cost of creating the product. Their challenge is to continually creating and adding value to ensure this doesn't happen.

Personally, I find two things largely drive my choices on what to buy, and they're running out options that will motivate me. First and foremost, I'm driven to buy ships that I recognize, be it from the EU stuff I've enjoyed, the movies, or from the new "EU" (i.e., ships like Ghost, the Inquisitor's TIE, or whatever else may come of interest from the new canon outside of movies; Shadow Caster is one of the few things not yet released I'd want). Second to that is ships I've never seen, but thought looked cool, such as the TIE defender, the Raider or the Decimator.

I have a very small scum collection which will only grow when I see really cool pieces for it (such as Shadow Caster), as opposed to the Rebels or the Empire that I've tried to flesh out with ships for various roles in my squadrons (not hard as most of those roles are filled by fairly iconic ships).

The last Rebel and Empire releases I found rather ugly and undesirable (K-wing and TIE punisher). Short of venturing into the Clone Wars, the only ships I can think of that they haven't released yet I'd be interested in would be the Shadow Caster and the Rogue Shadow. (No, it's not just because shadows are cool...)

As I see it, why buy stuff if it doesn't interest me? Those who want more scum, I'm sure there's still a lot to be produced. I personally find a lot of the TIE variants rather distasteful, so I'm not exactly awaiting them eagerly. Others are really enthusiastic in their hopes for the TIE Aggressor, and I hope they get it. Same with the XG-1. Far from saying the sky is falling, I only acknowledge that FFG has rather little left they can produce to get my interest.

Maybe if they keep Imperial Assault going long enough for me to get the Ghost crew. I haven't gotten into IA, but it's my best hope for minis of some of the characters Wizards of the Coast never produced, and brewing custom stats for the Wizards rule set is pretty easy.

Allons-y

Ummmm have u actually seen the rogue shadow... Out of shadows? Let's just say it makes the falcon loom sleek...

I once considered buying ship for cards then realised I'd have crap to trade if I just bought stuff that I wanted to play with anyway. Come to worst if you want to play in a tournament, make friends who will loan cards, trade for cards with stuff u don't need, or just pony up some cash and buy singles.

For me personally; I love Star Wars. I grew up on the EU so some of these ships that may be unfamiliar to many are just as much a part of my childhood as the T-65. It makes me want them all regardless of cards. Still; I like to have all the cards available for total freedom of list building and to be able to play whatever tickles my fancy at that moment (variety is the spice of life and all that).

What I do find, however, is the schedule of releases has picked up somewhat and satisfying my OCD is hurting my wallet increasingly all the time. Does this mean I'm going to stop buying? No. Does this mean I may have to wait a few more weeks to get new toys AND eat? Yes. I'm in my 30's, single with no dependants and can pretty much spend my money however I choose so if it's tough for me to keep up; I'm sure it will be for the majority of people who have less disposable income than myself. Yes, I've read the thread and yes, I know I do not NEED everything. But I want it and will eventually buy it all. That's my choice and maybe not the most sensible of choices but it's what I'm happy with.

X-Wing to me is still a fantastically balanced game with the only down side being the ever increasing cost of competitive builds. That said; there are other games I play who's designers have irked me massively and I still play so I think it'd take a lot for FFG to really push me over the edge to an exit strategy. I'm certainly going to be slowing down though....

The game has always been very "buy what you like" with a few exceptions for important, not-quite-essential cards like autothrusters.

That is crap. Have you ever tried flying a squad of TIE Advanceds against a squad of post-Raider TIE Advanceds? FFG has made progression part of the game. Do not pretend otherwise.

No, it hasn't there have been mass topics on this very subject. The releases have been the same speed since wave 1.

This only matters if you play in tournaments and lots of people don't play in tournaments.

Myself I'll keep doing what I have done. I'll buy ships that look interesting and have upgrade cards I want. I won't buy ships solely for the upgrade cards.

Referring to the Opening Post.

I've thought of getting out more than once. Each time Fantasy Flight has either come out with cards or ships that looking interesting to me. The TIE Defender and Bomber fixes coming out look nice. The Ghost, for me at least, seems to go well with the Gozanti since they are both in Rebels. But still the game has grown and there are just too many options for my liking. Not everyone is the same nor does everyone have the same tastes or interests in the game. I am hoping to find a stopping point and save my wallet and storage. I thought I was there then... well FFG must know what grabs my interest.

For what it's worth X-Wing has influenced my decisions in other purchasing areas such as Imperial Assault and Armada. I've definitely already bought in and stopped. Odd though, if there were less upgrades, fixes, buffs (read complication) I might have continued to buy ships and not even thought about it.

[Edit] P.S. Thinking about another thread going on. I wish FFG would publish a guide to ships and best upgrades plus pre-built squads. Something that you could down load since it changes every Wave. They could build it solely from tournament lists and input from the community. Tell me what the synergies are and best combos and I'd feel better. Other's can enjoy building and tweaking and the rest can enjoy just plopping down a squad and playing.

P.P.S. Too many upgrades tend to slow down Epic to the point it can be unplayable. Just too much going on per ship.

The Wave's may be the same speed but the schedule of available products has increased as has the price tag. All of 2012's releases total £78RRP (based on one of each ship/pack and excluding accessories), 2013's £135RRP, 2014's £263RRP, 2015's £299RRP and Wave 8 alone (excluding TFA ships as they're already out) reaches a whopping £92 alone. By far the most expensive wave yet. It's not so much the pace of release but the fact that each year see's progressively a higher price tag on "all the toys" that makes it hard on my wallet.

I like variety and, as previously stated, will continue to buy the toys; just at a slower pace.

Not bothered about other threads; was simply giving my opinion to the OP. I'm sure this years releases will total more than 2015's as is the trend; making it harder to be such a slave to OCD. I'm not bitching; simply stating an observation. Let's face it; £300 per year is a bigger bill than £135 per year. This, simply, does make it harder for me to keep buying minimum of one of each ship.

Personally, I'm hoping that enough of us keep buying any form of ships on a regular basis so that FFG will keep this great game going. I'm not hung up on what ships are released. I think they do an excellent job of presenting quality models (with a few minor quality control issues) with more than adequate paint and a thriving balanced if progressive game. I want to still be as excited about opening up a new model 10 years from now as I still am nearly a year after my first one.

As I am not tied into a single faction and I'm not a fanboy of any one single ship, I don't mind having a lot of ships floating around the house. As the bank and I currently are in agreement on how long it will take till I have satisfied the requirements that the house is mine, I can do pretty much whatever I want... which means, as long as I keep my wife happy, I can do what the heck I want with my spaceships, and I hope the rest of you find someone that you can make happy for decades (we just hit our 20th last month, so I feel like I'm doing pretty good!).

I am also not buying this game for the 100 point PvP game, though I enjoy those plenty too! I want to eventually run some serious month long Epic Games / Campaigns with more than 300 points per side. I'm not buying one or two ships a year. I'm buying one or two ships a month (or more) and I'm buying Epic ships several times per year. Basically I have a budget and I'm pretty consistent on buying new things. I've also eliminated most other gaming in my life, and I'm not regretting that one bit. If I can get a local group finally started this year, it will be a very successful year for me.

TL;DR!

Are there going to be ships that I don't personally like and may not buy? Probably so. Am I going to quit a game I love with a great player base and very new player friendly because someone loves something else more than I do? No... for the same reason I'm not going to quit buying my favorite pair of tennis shoes if the same brand puts out one in gaudy colors and it is featured on a tv commercial... that's just doesn't make sense.
