Geronimo! -or- Is it time to make an exit strategy?

By Futant420, in X-Wing

My answer: Geronimo! I have only just begun buying Star Wars toys!...I mean collectable miniatures.

You act like FFG just released Age of Skywalker and removed the squadron point limit on all games.

Now for those that don't find X-wing as interesting as it was back in Wave 3 when all the OT ships were out and now want to move on it is understandable. The FFG business model was to go beyond the OT as the OT only provided enough ships for 3 waves. now at first maybe they only planned on it lasting for only 3 waves but X-wing clearly has expanded beyond that.

Now very few people are a fan of the prequels and there are Star Wars fans that don't like TFA (and you can't call them not a star wars fan for not liking episode 7 it is all a matter of perspective). So if all you want is the ships from the OT well good news you got it. Time to call it quits.

So what exit strategy, well as long as people are playing the game there is no need to worry about having to quit because of no players. But if the game is getting to a point where it is no longer fun anymore because of the meta or different models. Then your exit strategy should be based on do you plan on returning? Now if you already have a collection you would have a preferred faction and a 2nd faction. The best plan is to keep your collection and only sell off if you have ships from a faction that you don't have enough to play a 100 points. Other than that keep your miniatures. Now if you plan on quitting all together then selling your miniatures and getting into another game say like Armada. That is fine too.

Hey if OT is your thing, cool. But do me a favor, don't use the EU pilots in those ships, no howlrunner, Fel, hobbie, etc. Cause you know EU is evil.

If you feel like stop buying stuff that's fine, this game is a hobbie, you do what you want with your money. I think some fail to understand this.

I for one am a big fan of Star Wars, all of these ships so far feel just fine because they are rooted to the series already and I grew up with pretty much everything that's been made into a ship (TIE phantom being the exception). I do feel like we will be seeing some rereleases though for ships due to the next movie focusing on the Rogues and how the death star plans were stolen, so probably more X-wings, but that isn't a problem. One of the beauties of this game is you are fine with limited purchases. The whole need to buy everything to be competitive is a bunch of malarkey. Nothing stops you from buying single upgrades later as well.

I still want Corsec ships and pilots. There is a whole fourth factions worth of ships right there. I mean, we already have Corran Horn......

I bought/received only the ships I really like. I have three fairly balanced factions. I am no fan of the A-wing, but still have the Rebel Aces B-wing' as I do like B-wings a lot. I gave the A-wing to a friend who is no fan of B-wings, but is a great fan of A-wings :)

No need to buy every ship if you never use it and in casual play we allow proxies.

For beginners. Most expect X-wings vs TIE fighters anyway. So start with those :)

Hell, with someone just entering the game, I encourage proxies.

This has nothing to do with proxies or buying ships or telling anyone the ships suck without the fixes or how they need to buy the fixes to have fun. Stop being so judge mental and argumentative because that's your problem.

Bit of a defensive response there Gungo.

Always buy ships based on the ships you wanna play. Use a squadron builder if you need to proxy. It just cos there is a new card out that could be good for you doesn't mean that you need to own it unless you play official tournaments.

I would wait for the probable Rebel Veterans box, which should bring the T-65 fix as a threshold for whether you want to stop collecting new ships.

That's at least my threshold.

I also thinking that FFG themselves are pretty aware of the effect of that specific item, as the release of it might lose some of the veteran hardcore-only-OT-Fans. This might be the reason, we could probably see it only 2017...!

;)

Ha! This topic comes up every wave since the first.

Like always I will keep picking up the stuff I like and growing my collection slowly. I'm pretty interested in the new Star Wars ships and the old eu ships.

I highly doubt we have seen the last of ships from the original trilogy there are endless repaints and new pilots to make. But I see the release schedule for origonal trilogy slowing down greatly and that's a good thing in my perspective. Keep on supporting the game and fine tuneing it over the years.

I could however see Asmodee North America CEO Christian Peterson pushing for a X Wing 2.0 though as it would increase their bottom line and his bonus check.

Ugh.

FFG respects it's players and has been extremely careful with its games in terms of reboots. They only reboot when it is absolutely critical and they do give players ways to bring their old collections into a new game when possible (look at the decent 1.0-2.0 model conversion pack.)

I think we are all really underestimating the potential for new ships. This business of the original ships being the only ones with charm... pah! Pah I say! There are plenty of ships with character. The Hwk, Defender, Z-95, I could go on, the Scyk, the Starviper... my personal favourite is Dash Rendar and the Outrider. I have always been a big fan of Shadows of the Empire, so for me the Outrider was a must have. I had no idea when I bought it, it would be so good, I was in it purely to have my favourite ship. Punishing One, same thing. Dengar rules.

...

It's way too early to write off X-Wing. The sky is not falling.

Glad you like those ships, but for some of us, it just doesn't do it.

And I didn't see anyone say the sky is falling prior to your post.

My Plano is getting pretty full and I have to get creative on how to fit more into. Once I'm completely out of room, I will call it a day. But maybe I'll only "quit" Imperial first, since that is running out of space the fastest.

You missed the point.

Those characters and ships only appeared for moments in the original films. I don't think you ever saw much of Kyle and Jans ship in those games either, but here they are. So all those two second characters you see in TFA, will probably spawn their own stories and followings in the next few years.

No one said the sky was falling?

Looks at thread title... laughs.

And what was the point of your response to me anyways?

I was trying to corral this thread back on topic, but I should really know better. If you thought the thread title was saying the sky is falling, then maybe you should try reading more and projecting less. It was clearly a question of whether or not anyone felt that it's time to quit buying ships -as I do. If you took offense, that's on you. I never said X-Wing was finished, nor did anyone else in the thread. I just said that I was finished with it.

Get back on topic? You were complaining that the game had begun to lose it's charm. Everyone, including me, posited their opinion. Seemed pretty straight forward to me.

No one took offense. I didn't. I just think it's silly to give up on something while it's so clearly in full swing. You want to quit and that's fine, but let's not pretend that it's because FFG is losing steam. People complain that there is no OT charm? Well how about we give TFA 40 years and lets see how much more charming it seems then.

I once thought as you do - that I pretty much had everything I wanted now. I'm a purist, and so long as I had what I deemed to be the 'core ships' I would be happy to stop at a certain point.

But sadly these little models are like a plastic crack addiction, and now I'm hooked. I've already got 2 Carriers because I love the look of the blue TIES, so I plan to replace all my current swarm with these new models. I really would like to see a video of where these things are made and how they get them to look so **** good and consistent.

Then they release fix cards that are too good to pass up on - so I've resigned myself to the fact that FFG have made something really great in every respect that they truly care enough about to make it worth supporting, and while ever they continue to do so, where they lead, I shall follow because I can't wait to see what they're releasing next.

If anything they need to release crap more often so that people don't get bored enough to make countless threads like these.

I personally love this game. I got it for my nephew back in wave 3 figuring even if he didn't like the game (which he does) I could still display the ships. While I am mostly a scum player I will buy any ship I like for the simple fact that even if the game ends the models are worth collecting. So I have no exit strategy and doubt I will any time in the future. Just buy the ships you love and know even it the game died out tomorrow you will have to scale models that you can display. Not every miniatures game can claim that.

Well, i am one of those guys that only plays OT ships. I only have one advanced, and it only sees play as Vader. Only 1 falcon, and Just the one firespray (i do use all the pilots though). Only exception i made is the HWK, because dark forces was one of the first video games i owned.

I didn't do this because the other ships are crap, or they don't 'fit' in what i think is star wars, i just choose to do it that way in order to put a limit to my spending ;)

I play the following games : d&d adventure system, deadzone, blitzkrieg commander, blood bowl, warhammer, 40k, dungeon command, song of blade and heroes, ACW historical, napoleonic historical etc...

This means i spread my hobby budget over A LOT of stuff/games, and i just wanted to put a limit on my x wing colection, so i can spend on my other games!

Does this mean i made an exit strategy? Not really, i ordered another Y and B wing, and another bomber and interceptor for my new years present!

I have a lot of fun with just the OT ships, and don't mind proxying a card here or there. It's even more fun trying to adapt to what others are bringing when new ships /cards come out while flying your old and trusted friend, the double Y/double B * list

* the double Y/B is 2 x goldY with ion turret and r2 astro + 2 x dagger with FCS. Wich still is fun to play!

I've already stopped getting large ships I don't care about. But ****. The inquisitor tie looks fun. And the FOs are so awesome looking.

Sigh. I bet that new t70 generic is gonna need a fix or something too. Yuck. Amazing. I'd never think I'd say that. But 24 points is a lot to pay for a jousters dummy.

I rarely buy ships, just to get that one card I need for my killer list. For regular play, you need to get out of the tournament mind set with things like "You gotta get autothrusters for your TIE interceptor, so here, buy this ship that you'll never use also, so you can get the card you need." On regular play nights, have a "fun" list for newcomers and casual players, and keep your tourney list for the competitive crowd. Don't curbstomp a new or casual player with your Poe, Wedge, and stress hog Y wing list, play a normal list with cards the casual player would have access to. Will it be suboptimal? Maybe, but the new/casual player will have more fun, and be likely to spend money at the FLGS, and come back and play more. Then, if they get bit by the tourney bug, give them the skinny on what cards they need to get from various expansions, and let them go from there. All ships function PERFECTLY fine with the cards they come with, but they will function BETTER with a particular set of cards to go with them.

There is no way I would go all in on X-Wing 2.0. Buying another huge collection of the same ships for new cards and rules is ridiculous and I simply wouldn't do that.

I enjoy the game as it is and it doesn't need a complete revision. I could however see Asmodee North America CEO Christian Peterson pushing for a X Wing 2.0 though as it would increase their bottom line and his bonus check.

Why buy anything? If they come out with a 2.0 the rules will be available online. Some builder will have the updates included, so you can just print your lists! Easy-peasy! No need to buy anything except new ships that you dont already have!

you'll always have a competitive list: TIE swarm, Z swarm, BBBBZ, etc.

Still no Avenger, Hunter, Aggressor or Oppressor?

Nope. Can't stop yet.

Why, for some people, does it always seem to be a case of "buy everything or quit the game"?

I haven't bought Imperial Aces. Or the Decimator. Or the TIE Punisher. Or the Raider. I haven't bought any T-70 or TIE/fo expansions, andI've only got the Force Awakens box set because the damage deck was originally going to be required for comeptitive play. I've only got a HWK because I won it, and I don't intend to buy the Ghost or the Inquistor's TIE either.

That doesn't mean I'm going to stop playing any time soon though, and it doesn't mean I won't carry on buying X-Wing products for as long as they're produced, either. Buy what you personally want, or like the look of, or think will be fun to play. No exit strategy required.
