Geronimo! -or- Is it time to make an exit strategy?

By Futant420, in X-Wing

Does anyone besides me feel like it may be time for an exit strategy?

Through the release of Imperial Veterans, if you ignore the TFA ships and the Rebels TV ships, the game is pretty well matched faction-wise. 10 ships a piece for Rebs and Imps, 11 for Scum, and most of the ships are viable/fixed. Covers the OT time era and a bit after, and is more than enough for any casual game I would play. Maybe more importantly, I feel like this game is more appealing for me when using the OT ships, so the new ships just aren't the droids I'm looking for.

I have been thinking a lot about what a 'complete collection' of things I actually want would look like. Barring the fix for the T-65, M3-A and K-fighter, and of course the two huge scum ships (or something too **** cool to pass up like a Neb B), I think I may have everything I require from this game. On the plus side. I will finally be able to get a custom storage solution going (once the aforementioned ships/aces/veterans are released) since I won't need to worry about buying new ships. Also on the plus side, my wallet will smell less like scorched plastic and it largely spares me from Asmodee's new sales policies. The downside is that I won't be competitive in the tourney scene without the new stuff, but I'm pretty much done with tourneys these days anyway.

Even though I'm pulling the rip-cord, I'm very interested in how my fellow x-wingers feel about the current state of affairs. Have you gotten what you want from this game, or will you await each new release with baited breath until the game stops? Is era something you care about? Is it all about the cards? Are there still ships that you hope get made?

What say you, forum goers? Are you still in?

MORE!!!!

Seriously, I have a pretty large list of ships I want to see made into beautiful FFG models.

There's always a TIE swarm.

I will say it's a lot harder now getting new people into the game after I give them the binder full of upgrades.

And everytime they pick a ship I tell them they should take a certain fix card because that ship is not going to play well without it.

I don't feel like it's the kind of thing where you have to make an intentional decision or declaration to stop buying. The game has always been very "buy what you like" with a few exceptions for important, not-quite-essential cards like autothrusters. For casual collectors, this is meaningless as you can just proxy the cards or not even worry about them if the level of competition isn't high enough to matter. For hardcore/tournament players, you still don't need every new ship to stay competitive, and there is a greatly untapped secondary market for both buying cards and selling unwanted ships (without some of their cards).

I have not been keeping up 100% with the latest releases myself. I bought in to scum a little bit, but I still don't have the scyk, IG-2000, or hound's tooth, and I don't really find myself missing them. In wave 8, I'm on the fence for pretty much all the ships, but I am interested in Imperial veterans. No one is twisting my arm to buy every single thing

That's your problem. Don't tell them that they need "X" to play a certain ship, because, in most instances, a ship is still a very playable, if not competitive, without the "fixes".

Tell them what they need to have fun, not what they need to be competitive. $100 buy in for a single faction is still a great starting point for most new players.

I once thought as you do.... YOU DON'T KNOW THE POWER of the Miniature side. I must obey my master. :P But yeah, I stopped buying anything after the Tie Defender came out, But since the T-70 and the F/O Tie's rolled out, I'm back in.

I agree with all of this. And I certainly am not talking about 200 points of every ship. For me, I like the symmetry between factions at this particular point in the game. Factor in the new ships I don't really want and it makes it easier for me to bail.

I feel you.

I am still eagerly awaiting the Imperial Assault Gunboat. (I'd want two of those.) And if a Y-Wing is present in a new Rebel Veterans expansion, I would certainly like to pick that up.

...which *might* lead me to purchase the Imperial Veterans expansion for symmetry.

Otherwise, I have all that I need.

I was feeling a little sad with Scum, but now I'm enjoying Guri... And then we are getting Imperial Veterans, wich makes me go for imps from the start! THAT red defender!!

There's still a lot of ships I'd like to see. I still think there are a few more years left.

And knowing FFG, once it starts to dip 2.0 will come out.

I agree with Sithborg on this. I saw a similar comment from Bulhalin in another thread and I just don't get it. Why overwhelm new players with stuff that may not pertain to them. The majority of players aren't tournament players and even if they are there are cheaper lists that can be competitive. Most new players need advice about how much ordnance on a ship is reasonable and examples of when Marksmanship is actually a good idea. Tell them not to purchase 3 expansions of a given ship until they see how it plays. Encourage them to print off a list from one of the squad builders so they can try out a couple things before they buy stuff they are going to regret. And if they don't play competitively then there is no reason that they need to run off and purchase 2 Star Vipers just so they can equip Autothrusters on all their A-Wings if they just play in friendly game nights.

I know a lot of long time players around here have gotten extremely jaded about certain things but there is no reason to project those feelings onto a new player that may have a completely different view and set of expectations than you.

Cut and run? Typical liberalisms!

Hell, with someone just entering the game, I encourage proxies.

I've been on the fence lately about it. I really do appreciate what FFG has done with this game, especially after all the other attempts at making a good Star Wars space combat game. I think they have one hell of a design crew, and in many ways deserve to be commended.

But each of the past few waves had at least one thing in it where I was just dumbfounded that it made it through. Whisper/Corran, Dash-v-Chiraneau, Poe, TLT are the culprits here. Then there's their insistence to not use errata, which I think is noble, but also a road paved with good intentions to hell. And that's caused other problems with what they release as work-around, aka bandaid, fixes, like Autothrusters to 'solve' the Threepio problem, which in my opinion was only a problem caused by its efficiency in a two ship meta, which was in turn caused by the quality of the Phantom in the first place.

So in the games current state, with as much as I want to continue play, I'm not sure how much faith I have left in them, or their ability to continue to make a healthy game that I find enjoyable, with the design philosophy they adhere to. I may soon be stuck waiting for 2.0 X-wing. And starting all over.

Honestly to say FFG can or should create these ships FOREVER is simply not sound thinking.

The game is pretty much balanced right now if you stopped and had a full collection of all factions 2-3 of most ships with 8 of the swarm ships, and at least 1 huge ship of each type you are set.

Much of the next 3-4 years of x wing will be filling in holes in existing ships. Aces packs etc. I would say 25%-40% of the releases will be these sorts of things. The EU is kind of unknown to most people and only has limited draw for most folks.

I enjoy the game and will keep collecting till they shut it down in a few years. 3-5 years is probably a realistic lifespan. Forever or open ended really isn't.

There is no way I would go all in on X-Wing 2.0. Buying another huge collection of the same ships for new cards and rules is ridiculous and I simply wouldn't do that.

I enjoy the game as it is and it doesn't need a complete revision. I could however see Asmodee North America CEO Christian Peterson pushing for a X Wing 2.0 though as it would increase their bottom line and his bonus check.

You need the bounty hunters from the movies. So at least get this next wave.

2.0 is where I'd drop out. I recently got into the game to play with my sons, and I would not buy into a non compatible new version. This one works for us, trading up and putting it all behind does not fit the values we want to instill in them. That being said, we'd be happy to then buy your "worthless" 1.0 ships off of you ;)

Reminds me how much of a sinkhole my high school saved me from when they banned MtG. Really happy I got to sell those dual lands for a few hundreds each 20 years later though! That buys a lot of ships ;)

This coming wave is the first where i'll only be getting 1 of each ship.

Hell no. Game is booming here. We just got two new players locally and had a thirty four player store championship today.

I think I'll be perfectly happy with my collection by the time wave 8 comes, and I won't even be getting all of that. I just don't find myself interested in scum.

This sums up my feelings. I just started around Christmas and I own 6 ships and I'm almost done buying until imperial veterans. I don't feel that I lose games due to inferior lists because I don't own the new hotness, but due to piloting mistakes.

I think we are all really underestimating the potential for new ships. This business of the original ships being the only ones with charm... pah! Pah I say! There are plenty of ships with character. The Hwk, Defender, Z-95, I could go on, the Scyk, the Starviper... my personal favourite is Dash Rendar and the Outrider. I have always been a big fan of Shadows of the Empire, so for me the Outrider was a must have. I had no idea when I bought it, it would be so good, I was in it purely to have my favourite ship. Punishing One, same thing. Dengar rules.

But that's all subjective, and more to the point, needs time to grow. I can think of three Scum ships off the top of my head from TFA. And what about all the two-bit characters who will spawn their own fans? That pair that Finn almost joined? That's four Scum ships now, and this is from just one movie that everyone has written off as a source of new ships! I can only imagine what's in the comics. What about future video games and books? Give the new movies time to sink in. At least let's see what the trilogy holds eh? Only a fool would discontinue X-Wing now, when FFG holds the license. Perhaps after all three movies have cleared then we'll see some business moves, but nothing is going to happen right now to tip the cash cows.

It's way too early to write off X-Wing. The sky is not falling.

I will say it's a lot harder now getting new people into the game after I give them the binder full of upgrades.

Are these people planning to immediately jump into tournaments? No? Then they don't need any of the fixes and the like, if they're just going to putter around casually on the kitchen table they'll be fine. Obviously the game is going to be intimidating if you hand a new player your binder full of 2-3 years worth of upgrade cards or pilots and try to start immediately walking them through it.
