Painting minis, Probe Droid primer (need help)

By Ariamn, in Star Wars: Imperial Assault

Hey,

I am currently following Sorastro's Painting guide and just made it to the droids. Now I went to store to purchase a primer and all they had was silver steel, the guy said that "Citadel The Fang" was also "grey", I asked if he was certain because it has the colour blue on the logo, he said yes. I got home and tried the spray, turns out it is blue.

The thing is, is it okay to prime the droids with this (Citadel The Fang) or would you suggest black / grey primer instead?

I primed mine white and then painting them with slightlight water downed coats of black to no lose detail. Worked if, if not more work.

I primed mine white as well and then basecoated with Mechanicus Standard Gray (2 droids) and one with Leadbelcher (I wanted to try something different). Then I did the drybrushing etc. mentioned on the video. It worked out just fine.

Hmm thanks for the replies, will try it out using the white primer then.

I couldn't get hold of a citadel Black spray primer so I got Dark Reaper which is a dark green and it's been fine to work with. I'm sure you can make do with what you have as well.

I primered mine black then dry brushed with runefang, nuln oil wash, then highlighted some of edges. The probe droids painted up fairly wuicklt

Not finished, but I clearly need a better brush to get in to the tricky areas

I primed mine in black, dry brushed with necron compound, shaded with Nuln Oil, and highlighted with Leadbelcher. I then painted all of the lenses with black and covered them with Ardcoat. Google "Imperial Probe Droid Sixth Scale" as reference. That model has some "panels" and "buttons" painted red. They make the figure stand out a little more.

I primed mine black, then painted with Leadbelcher, applied Nuln Oil twice. I painted the front light red incl. highlights. I painted all of the lenses black and covered them with 'Ardcoat.

I'm no expert, but priming does a couple of things. Mainly, It helps the acryllic paint adhere to the surface of the mini. (not entirely necessary with the IA minis). It also affects the hue/tone of the subsequent layers of paint.

The Fang is a fantastic and versatile colour to start painting on with. As you can see with Ariamn, the Blue will only really show through where the subsequent coats are thinnest.

I suggest a few thin layers of Leadbelcher, letting each layer dry properly. Then a shade with Nuln Oil or perhaps a mix of Nuln and Drakkenhoff Nightshade for a slightly blue shadow.

Then a heavy drybrush with something like Ironbreaker. If you dry brush with Necron Compound or Runefang Steel (which is a much lighter silver) then another shade with Nuln Oil over it to darken overall while maintaining the contrast between metals would be nice.

I painted the lenses really dark grey then glazed them blue or red. A final coat of thinned 'ardcoat is a fantastic effect.

I only had white primer, so I just Nuln Oil'd them to the level of gray that looked right. I've never painted before, and just cannot justify spending so much on paint. So I use what I have.

Blue won't be a huge deal as you'll be basecoating over it anyways :)

That actually looks impressive, nice job

Thanks! I've been learning a lot as I go along, making mistakes... and spending entirely too much time painting. Almost done with all my Imperials though, and the battles just keep looking cooler and cooler!

It's surprising how much depth the painted characters give the game. For one, the figures are easier to differentiate. And if you paint the rims with different colors, you don't have to use the squad markers etc. A lot of perks. And it's a nice hobby to spend (often way too much) time.

I feel like a slow painter myself as it takes me about 5 hours to get one character (e.g. Verena) done from start to finish.

EDIT: Oh, forgot to say that your probe droid looks very nice. A shade mix of 2 parts Nuln Oil, 1 part Drakenhof Nightshade is also worth testing if you haven't painted all your droids yet. It gives the droid a subtle blue hue.

Thanks! Great tip, and I'll need to try that on future paints. I tried to start out with about 5-6 different paints, and made it all the way through my Imperials, right up to the Trandoshans - those guys cost me a trip to the store and I now believe that I have spent more on paints than the game...

I tried some cheap paints that my kids had but the finish was just so chalky and required a lot of repainting and thinning - such a time-suck. I'm a Citadel fan-boy now.

By necessity, I have to be cheap. I use Apple Barrel and it's super cheap (like $1 - $1.75 for a 2 oz bottle). The only colors I've had issues with are orange (required multiple coats) and silver (it looked glittery, so I got a different brand). I cut them with Pledge floor care, and then make my own wash with distilled water, black paint, and a little bit of Pledge. Then when I'm done I use Pledge as a sealer (unlike most gamers I like the glossy finish better).
