Hello there! Lightsaber modification question incoming...

By DarrenAlde, in Star Wars: Force and Destiny RPG

First of all, let me start with saying: "Thank you!" I have been lurking through these forums since the days of Edge of the Empire Core Rulebook released.

The amount of helpful informations found on these forums is astonishing and the overall atmosphere is (with few and far exceptions) welcoming and friendly!

Secondly, let me applaud the merry company of Order 66 podcast, your thoughts on the game and adventure seeds that you provide are a constant stream of joy that allows me to pass through long journeys on the bus or train and come out as (hopefully) a better GM and player.

The same applies to the Tales from a Hydian way that carry me through my walking trips (as they tend to be shorter)!

Now that is out of the way, let me say this: I absolutely adore this system. I enjoyed the first glance we got with Edge of the Empire but, for me Force is the deciding factor of Star Wars. So I have waited till the last Core Rulebook to delve in. I succumbed and now own a shelf filled with... not only FaD Core, but I later realised I love the grittier themes of EotE so I bought the collection of the released books as well.

It was strained by many hardships as the books are quite hard to obtain in my country and as a college student my finances are rather limited. But as of now, I am always looking for new books to add to my ever-growing collection. The books are a work of love and artwork is one of the best I have ever seen in any book, not only tabletop rpgs.

With a few fellow law students, we have formed a gaming group and have already delved into our first adventure. I had to be GM (not as it is bad) as I knew the system and someone had to initiate them. We had a blast. Story I made up was inspired by the one in the core rulebook but as I hate single-path adventures, I decided to spice it up. A bit. Then a lot. My players loved it. As we are in the midst of exam time, our next session will take place, presumably next month, till then I have a lot of time to worry about some issues or rather ideas, raised during our session.

As a novice GM, I would be glad for any advice given by yoy! So there we go...

The subject-matter consists of lightsaber construction. One of my players (A Force-sensitive Archeologist) is looking forward to constructing one, but there is still a lot to happen before that, he just came up with a wonderful idea and asked me, if that is feasible.

As Force-sensitive he was bound to become Jedi, yet his parents an Alderanian noble and a smuggler did not believe in any of the jedi-nonsense and forced the Jedi Order to abandon their hope of securing him in his young age. Nevertheless, the Jedi Order could not risk a Force-sensitive to go around without control, so they assigned a Jedi from the Council of First Knowledge to look out for this young one.

During his studies in the time of the late clone-wars (we are playing in the time-frame of 13 BBY) he was a part of Jedi Excavation group that was working on Ossus, assigned to provide excavation assistance. The reason for this assignment was pulling of strings of the FK Jedi Master who set his padawan to find out more about the will of the Force with the young archeologist. So the padawan found out about the Force visions that the archeologist has and... wait, this is rather irrelevant for the question! Ooops, sorry.

Well, during these months, he once saves the padawan, using his glow-rod to blind the beast that assailed them and states that: "Sometimes a glow-rod is mightier than a lightsaber." (Direct nod to the Last Crusade)

His intention, as of individual heavily reliant on history not only his, but of entire universe is to build a lightsaber, that looks like a glow-rod. His reasoning behind that not only based upon his emotions but on the practicality of it too.

First of, a glow-rod does not attract attention as blatantly. Secondly - he wants too give his lightsaber the ability to work as glow-rod even by adding a energy-source into the base of the lightsaber. He is perfectly willing to sacrifice some HPs for that.

I really love the idea as it connects the character to the item and is really creative. Apart from this, I am unsure of how to do this mechanically as I am not that well-versed in the lightsaber creation rules yet...

As far as I am concerned, this could certainly fall under the category of (Enhanced Hilt) modification, yet forcing the player to spend 5K creds that as a starting character he has no way to get seems a bit harsh to me.

He envisions it as having a hidden safety-lock that allows the lightsaber use, as opposed to normal use as glow-rod.

I cas see this to work even in combat like: "Once per encounter, you may add either boost or setback die to the roll" - to represent the light flicker aimed at opponent“s eyes. Some species might be immune to this.

The overall appearence of the saber as glow-rod would give it an Stealth Hard check in order to identify it as a lightsaber.

How do you find that? Any ideas how to implement this better? Would you allow that? Thanks in advance!

And may the Dice (Force) be with you!
