After new ships stop coming.....

By Sir Orrin, in X-Wing

Has another Star Wars tabletop game been around very long? I can't think of any, except maybe the WEG roleplaying game. For various reasons, I don't see X-Wing as a game that can survive very long without new products being published.

However, I also do not agree that the reservoir of possible expansions will be empty soon. There are four more films to draw on as well as the Rebels cartoons. Reprints in the vein of 'aces' or 'veterans' packs might become a bit more common, but there is also the possibility of an expansion branching out in some kind of new territory, like space stations, ground combat, scenario/cinematic expansions, or something we haven't really thought about. All this is assuming the prequels are left untouched.

Hopefully the community will continue to thrive well after Xwing stops being in production, but those are times I do not want to think about.

If anything, Xwing will come down to one expansion a year, draw it out, or re-release old ships in new packaging or create much different versions of imperial aces, veterans and maybe even elites for more ships. I have a feeling thought that with the coming of TFA a new wave of ships is on the horizon that will keep Xwing fresh and new for years to come.

We will get a second edition before it comes down to that.

And maybe they get the ships' costs right from the beginning, with no need of later "fixes".

I hope it takes some time, though. There will be plenty of content for the next 5-6 years (because of the new films). Anyway, there is always the prequels... (would need 2 new independent factions, of course) and even the Old Republic stuff.

PS: With an eventual second edition (remade cards and rules), I honestly hope at least the miniatures will be full compatible with the new game.

I'm making sure I have enough X-Wing stuff to keep myself entertained with the game long after it goes out of print. There are so many possibilities for squads that it will take very long just to explore them all, let alone master them.

I believe it will be played for many years after it's eventually out of print, if that ever happens just because there are no new ships doesn't mean they will stop printing the old ones. Something else to keep in mind in terms of available ships to use, what prevents them from making new fighters? They already made a brand new capital ship why couldn't they create new fighters? Perhaps even *crosses fingers* using a fan vote and/or worlds winners input to create new ones. When this game does eventually become out of print or they lose the license I think the community will keep it alive for many many years to come.

If this game ever goes out of print our collections will be worth quite a bit.

It will still be played just less.

Like other games that have gone the way of the dodo, the people who truly love the game will horde most of the figures for no good reason. Like my D&D minis, mechwarror, pirates, haloclix, heroclix ect, ect, ect. I still buy up anything I find for them for the most part, why? cause I'm sick in the head.

Id wager when and if it goes out of print Ill spend more then I have for the life of the game to make sure I can enjoy it anytime.

I will keep playing till I get to old to remember what's going on and they haul me off. Have 3-8 ships of all small ships and all the Huge ships.

My collection is set up so I can do 3-4 players who can literally play anything they want. Its setup to be a complete set after the end comes of the product line. I envision 3-4 years the x wing line will be pretty played out.

My son can have the set after I'm gone.

I know a lot of people who still play 2nd edition AD&D, and that ended in the early 90's. As long as a game is solid, balanced & fun people will play it. As long as I have someone to game with I'll be playing X-wing, regardless of FFG's support.

Did people stop playing Chess?

No. Never. Xwing Forever!

Disney just got the Star Wars rights. They are building Star Wars area in their theme parks. They are gonna want to get all they can for their $4 billion. We have a new trilogy, and in between those films we have Rogue One and a Boba Fett spinoff. Plus shows like Rebels. Plus new videogames, books, comics, etc. Even if the new films only introduce one new wave a year, that will be good enough to keep interest in this game. There is a LONG way to go in terms of new content. FFG's challenge will be too differentiate all the new content enough to be worth a purchase. How many ways can 2-2-2-2 ships be different? They will have to keep thinking of new abilities and actions for the different ships to do.

But even if FFG just stops/relinquishes license and producing the game, there is enough content available right now to sustain it, I think. Thousands of possible squad combos.

I hope they stop.

There's no point in continuing a game far beyond the point where you run out of material. At that point you're just diluting the game and filling it with stuff that'll never be used.

I love this game. When it stops, I'll keep playing. But I don't wanna see it full of crap that has no place

I think we've already reached the point where things are being made up that have no place, simply because they have to release a new upgrade with each new ship they sell.

Personally I hope for a new rules set entirely, probably from a different company, which is different and has more advanced and heroic rules and mechanics.

It might make sense to make a republic era core game, that doesn't have to compatible with x wing.

Could span any time between the old wars with the sith and mandalorians to the clone wars. A new core set, a few changes to the core rules, and you're good to go. A lot of history there, and lots of ships that could be made, without shoveling it all into the same game.

Wouldn't be a bad way to test the waters for a 2nd edition of x wing, both from a rules and a sales model pov.

I think they could slow down with the ship releases (one, two waves per year), but focus on other things. Some 3D terrain (asteroids, crashed spaceships etc.), a campaign (set of related missions with varying objectives, in a tree structure), scenario book, optional game modes. Stuff to keep the game fresh without forcing FFG to release new models.

It would also be good to open up the tournament scene to countries other than the US - organizing Europe Championships, for example.

I am sure FFG CEO Christian Peterson and the Corporate Board of Asmodee would love to reboot X-wing 2.0 in a couple years then sell us all the same ships over again with different paint jobs and new cards. TSR, and WOTC followed this find tradition in RPG community and its a money maker.

I wont be buying any new edition as its unnecessary but its very likely to happen from a business stand point.

I'm going to assume by "No more ships" he means that there has already been a few new editions and were in the crazy future world of 2036 where we all play augmented reality versions of x-wing on our smart tables that are connected to the internet with people all over the world and everyone is so sick of Disney starwars its been run into the ground.

Digital recreations of the game, other companies copying the game and making their own similar versions, 3d printed home brewed ships, community developed content and eventually reprinting when a company wants to make more money.

Its pretty much the cycle of these sorts of games and X-wing's way better then most of the ones that have come, gone and come back again over the years.

I still play Blood Bowl. Chaos Dwarfs for the win!

The games huge competitive numbers will die off.
