Wampa with Palpatine

By AARONZEA, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Greetings.

Quick noob question.

Wampa attacks.

During Wampa's modify attack dice step, Palpatine changes one of his results to a Critical Result.

Palatine's card says that die cannot be modified again.

My question is, does Wampa's ability count as MODIFYING DICE?

So, does Wampa's cancelling of dice count as modifying?

Because if it does, then Wampa cannot cancel that Critical made by Palpatine.

Your thoughts are appreciated.

No, cancelling dice is not modifying them. This combo works.

A defender's evade results cancel the attacker's hit and crit results. If you couldn't cancel dice that Palpatine modified, those would end up being completely unblockable by the defender.

The combo works. But it is pretty expensive. In Epic format it is wonderful, but in 100 pts, not so sure it is viable.

Thank you for the responses.

I'm playing casually with my better half.

It's a just for fun list that includes

Wampa

Scourge with Juke

Redline with advanced homin missiles and extra mun.

Omicron lambda with Palpatine.

Thanks again!

I would say you would have to cancel all dice BEFORE the defender did his roll so that would be a kind of gamble might toss away a critical

The timing of Wampa is unclear. We used to have a rule saying that abilities that cancel die results happen during Compare Results*, which would mean that it happens after the defender rolls defense dice, but the current Rules Reference is silent on the issue. I've been assuming that's still the case, but I have submitted a rules question about it. If it turns out that Wampa does happen during Attacker Modifies Attack Dice, then I'll have to send in another question immediately asking if that means that "Cancel" is now considered one of the kinds of Dice Modification, and if so what that does with Palpatine.

*: Before somebody brings up Accuracy Corrector, it was errata'd to happen during Attacker Modifies Attack Dice specifically because otherwise it would have happened during Compare Results and not worked the way it was intended.

It seems like a very fun list.

The only other card that I could think of that 'could' fit into the combo is Colzet. Turn those wampa facedowns into crits! and actionless too, sort of.

Colzet would be fun! You are right! I'll make another list to fit him in.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Give Colzet a try with FCS, it's a great way to trigger his ability while leaving your actions free for Evades. He's pretty pure support with FCS, but that's OK if you have other ships to lay down the damage (like Wampa).

He's fine with Accuracy Corrector too, but then he's acting as a standard points filler with the PS to leave him out of Predator range that only occasionally uses his ability.

FFG suggested using him with Advanced Targeting Computer to take a TL, use it to add a crit, and then use the same TL to flip a damage card afterwards. Like many suggested builds in blog posts, it's a bad one. Low PS and no additional actions means you'll have trouble getting the TLs on the right targets and you'll get turned into mincemeat if you have to spend no actions on defense and facing turrets. So my take is to take FCS or AC.

Good insight.

Fire control system looks like it will work well in this case.

And the analysis regarding Advanced Targeting computer on Colzet is sound. Better to keep him with more actions available to give him a chance to survive and attack.

No problem! I'm a big believer in TIE Advanced options other than Vader, there's a lot to work with there!
