Star Wars Canon

By Imperial Advisor Arem Heshvaun, in X-Wing

So, this was an exercise to see if your copy/paste skills were still up to snuff?

Why not post in the off topic section where this belongs?

What are you trying to say with this topic, where's the discussion?

I was a developer and editor for nine years for Star Wars the Roleplaying Game by West End Games. These topics interest me greatly.

West End Games was THE Wookieepedia of its day.

You may not recognize me but many of the old guard in the gaming industry would. After all I had a hand with the conceptions of Victory Star Destroyer, the Imperial Security Bureau, the Inquisitorius, Boba Fett's sawed off blaster, Kashyyyk's multi level ecosystem, the Rancor being a species as opposed to a unique entity, the reproductive cycle of a Hutt, the origins of the Z-95 Headhunter and even the canon length of the Super Class Star Destroyer which I had MIT doctorates work on.

I have personally had long conversations over dinner with Timothy Zahn and Michael Stackpole and both are thankful for all the help we gave them over the years. Kathleen Kennedy staff put me on the guest list for The Force Awakens New York premier as a courtesy and she made a point to say hello.

What I am saying is, in a round about way child, unless the moderators say something to me, in The Emperor Palpatine's name, suck it up because I'll post what I very well please.

Thanks for this, OP.

Doing The Force's work.

Why thank you.

BY IMPERIAL EDICT, WRIT AND DECREE, YOU ARE PROMOTED TO RANK OF COMMODORE.

So Phasma's armor is from the junk yards and she is dumped into one as well.

I'd hardly consider armor plating from a diplomatic shuttle formally used by an Emperor to be junk.

For Imperials those are probably valuable collector's items.

It's like a Nazi building a suit of armor out of Hitler's car.

Kylo Ren: Look what I got on ebay! My grandfather's helmet! (Non mint condition)

Phasma: Neat! I've been collecting Chromium hull pieces for my armor from there, I've almost got a complete set!

Maz Kanata: I sniped you both on that Lightsaber and Hand auction. I'm keeping the Lightsaber, but you can have the hand if you want.

Snoke: Check out my cool Throne with built-in hologram generator. It's amazing that it survived the fall from Death Star 2.0 to Endor, but hey, The Force works in mysterious ways am I right?

Great work on the canon breakdown. Even stronger work with the name dropping! (J/k)

I do appreciate your work on the WEG front. That game was the major source of info and fleshed out an entire galaxy well before silly sci fi writers used it for granted in their attempts to put their mark on the saga.

Sounds like you worked closely with Dr. Saxton, one of my heroes who sadly seems to have finished his SW work long ago. I still bring up the Five Mile Fallacy when ever someone starts to quote old references without giving any consideration to actual canon evidence, such as the recent business with the TIE Shuttle and the proper orientation of the wings as seen in ESB.

First off, child? Really?

And why do you think this gives you some great and special power to post random stuff not related to the game in the main board when there's a perfectly good off topic section where this belongs?

I don't mind the content in and of itself, but can we please start using the subforums for what they're there for?

Or should we all just post anywhere we **** well please and never be able to find anything?

I have you to thank for the Empire not being flat and one dimensional?

Hell, even if you had a part in it, thank you. If you are ever in Vancouver, this nerd will buy you a beer!

I appreciated the d6 system over the level and class system/d20 that's for sure. I think it modeled cinematic adventure much better. I would say Fate/Fudge would be the closest system today.

It's easy to be the Wookieepedia of the day when you get to invent facts out of whole cloth. However, use of old concept art is a SW tradition and I'm glad to see Disney continue. That was something WEG definately got right. That and relying on the wookiee storybook as source material. Still waiting for the YT-1300 upgrade that lets Chewie use the the falcon's delta-7-esque scout ship to find his lost kid lumpy in time for Chewie's bicentennial.

You had me until this point, when your argument went from being mildly agreeable to majorly arrogant.

Lumpy? KILL IT, KILL IT WITH FIRE!!!

The Force Awakens Visual Dictionary and now officially canonized from Star Wars.com

lol I have a visual dictionary of Star Wars too now officially de-canonized. :P

So here is the question, was the Republic really destroyed in the first volley from Star Killer base?

The republic? No. However the head was cut off.

"Cut off one head, two more shall take it's place......"

What about TR-8R?

His name is FN-2199 or Nines. He's part of Finns squad from training. See the novel Before the Awakening.

I know, im just sick of the Meme, Star Wars should not be MEMED!

It is inevitable...

It is your DESTINY!

Hey guys, I invented TIE Fighters. You know this cause I said it on a message board. All of you now fall all over yourselves to praise me while I talk down to you and ignore forums rules!

Or should we all just post anywhere we **** well please and never be able to find anything?

To paraphrase Alfred Pennyworth,

"Some men just want to watch the whole world Galaxy burn."

After all, a Galaxy without The Emperor or His New Order deserves not to exist in my book.

Consider this.

We now have had 3 Death Stars. Obviously even when the Empire is down and out they can still pull off these massive feats of engineering and the human resource component is a non issue obviously. I can imagine that the First Order probably has a second Starkiller type in the projects, and even though they lost their base, they are still a force to be reckoned with. Perhaps the next movie will be different, and both factions come into this war on even ground?

I can also see some reuse of some more PT themes, like political corruption. Perhaps Snoke and the FO have already subverted the New Republic and the destruction of the NR Senate in TFA was another purging of the party. Perhaps this is why the Resistance gets no support from the NR? Perhaps they are FO sympathizers and once again the "Senate" will join with the bad guys, leaving a weary Princess to lead a doomed rebellion.

This treatment of the New Republic is utterly weaksauce... Darksaber level weaksauce.

"Imma go do politics instead of worry about military matters, 'cuz those are something you can separate from one another."

LAZY writing.

Also, thank you for helping keep star wars going long ago. That being said, I'll continue burning any copy of the old WEG material I find, as the game was overated in my opinion.

Woof.

Hey are you having a bad day man? If you are I hope it gets better. Really. We Star Wars fans just crushed those over grown smurfs in Avatar at the box office, I'm all smiles. Please have some chilled sake or a margarita.

Let's talk about that rule set.

To be fair here (and Padawan's humility aside for one snowball on Tatooine minute), I am fairly certain a complete NOVICE could build a staring character complete with skills and equipment for any alien race or human template for the Star Wars RPG, including some races we help define via the rule books. That was the point. We wanted Star Wars to be the point of entry for even non gamers to get into. It was created in the 80's, with a different gaming philosophy that tried to be more inclusive of the gaming community and was a product of a different era. It was a game made by Star Wars fans for Star Wars fans.

Also,

The game was made to have a Star Wars film feel, fast paced and fun, easy to get beginners and casual gamers into, action packed and lots of humor pilled in.

We tried to create more of a story telling game. It was not a mini tactical min/max opus like rule sets of today are.

If you were not a fan of those rules, then that's fair, BUT I hope you do have fun playing Heroes, Wookiees and Scoundrels with hearts of gold in a Galaxy, Far, Far Away in whatever rule set you do like.

Because that's exactly what we wanted you, your friends, and all Star Wars fans around the table to do. After all is said and done, we are ALL Star Wars fans.

As an aside at the very least, with respects to West End Games, in our heyday we kept the Star Wars fires burning when no one else took the torch. West End Games helped create several canon materiel that still survives to this day and are considered fact in the Star Wars Galaxy, from the Inquisitors you see in Star Wars Rebels to the Death Star Technical Manuals to the focusing crystals of a lightsaber to slave trade on Kashyyyk to almost all the little starfighters you play with.

How about this for a name drop. (Last one I promise.)

The names of the other three Star Destroyers, attached to Darth Vader's Death Squadron, (any fan can name the Executor, and some would remember the Avenger and Devastator but we needed to name the sister ships) - Conquest, Stalker, Tyrant, well that was me. And by golly it stuck.

Ditto for canonizing Grand Moff Tarkin's first name. :)

May The Force Be With You Samophlange, save some of the anger for the real villains, this thrice cursed insignificant Rebellion.

Then I have a question for you, considering your past: Who was the moof milker who thought up the imperial army trooper?

I'm not sure what the exact question is.

The Imperial Army has several movie related canon analogs/material that needed to be reconciled to have the Star Wars Galaxy "make sense."

General Tagge

Lieutenant General Veers

Major General Bast

Colonel Cass

The personnel and officers on the Death Star.

The AT-AT drivers on Hoth.

The AT-ST drivers and the ground troops attached to the shield bunker on Endor.

The Empire's Order of Battle had to be established, to give some logical resonance to the magnum opus of Space Opera that is Star Wars.

There was clearly The Imperial Fleet and analog to the real world navies. There was the Stormtrooper Core Legions which were the rough equivalent of the marines or in darker times the SS.

The Imperial Army was of course the mirror to real world armies, and whats an army without soldiers, hence the Imperial Army trooper.

The officers you see in the movie came up the ranks, they were all Imperial Army troopers at one point, they are STILL IN the Imperial Army when they are on screen.

I never met him but we corresponded very briefly via post in the late 90's. I was a fan of his technical commentaries for sure. He cataloged Star Wars vessels from all known sources at the time. I wish we did meet. Sadly by the time I had heard of his work West End Games had wrapped up.

My God that man is scary brilliant, I can play with numbers but that man could go to Las Vegas and crush a casino if he put his mind to it.

I have you to thank for the Empire not being flat and one dimensional?

Hell, even if you had a part in it, thank you. If you are ever in Vancouver, this nerd will buy you a beer!

Thank you Crazyterran. Do you have The Imperial Sourcebook? If not I will be happy to send you a digital copy.

I have been a Loyal Citizen of The Empire and the tenants of The New Order since 1977, happy you share the sentiment.

I love Vancouver, but how about if ever your in Manhattan for Comic Con or Indy for Gen Con I buy the drinks.

:)

Hey guys, I invented TIE Fighters.

No you didn't silly Ender.

But are you aware that the sound for TIE fighter was created by combining an elephant's scream with the noise of a car driving on a wet road.

The TIE engine noises were made to sound profoundly menacing, much like the distinctive

After all, Grand Moff Tarkin's Doctrine of Fear works in the real world as it did in Star Wars Galaxy.
