Rogue One - we know the end

By Crabbok, in X-Wing Off-Topic

Do you think your enjoyment of the film will be hampered by the fact that we know that the rebels eventually DO get the plans? I usually hate backstories because we know how it ultimately ends, and any tension or drama that develops is typically irrelevant with regards to the larger story.

I think however, that it would be a significant plot twist if our main heroes actually FAIL at the end of the film, and it turns out that some other team ends up getting the plans. Imagine the audience is watching Rogue One the whole film, assuming the good guys will win, and it turns out they fail???

I'd be giddy.

I mean hell, you've got to figure it'd take the Empire years to build that thing, if not decades. So during that time, you honestly can't expect the first and only mission to get the plans to be a triumphant success. I think if the film shows them fail, yet possibly pass on some information to the next team, and show that even though they failed, they at least inspired an eventual success, then I'd be cool with it.

Also really hoping to see Kyle Katarn and Jan Ors in this movie. At the very least I'd love to see an HWK docked somewhere or something.

I'd imagine it won't end with transmitting the plans. By that point in the movie, we'll be invested in our heroes. I think they will transmit the plans and then get tracked down by Vader who will personally "interrogate" them and then dispatch them. We get a gritty film where everybody loses.

So, they are lying when they say that the movie is about the Rebellion's first victory?

This is actually sort of the vibe I get from the little teaser they put out. This is a bad time. The Empire is at max power, there's no cohesive Rebellion, and there are no Jedi to be heroes. The tension in the story well be how many of our band make it through the movie alive.

Does it bother you when you go into a movie and know the good guys win? Or that the hero will get the girl. Or that the bad guy will get what's coming to him?

I mean in ANH did anyone really think that the DS was going to survive the battle?

To me the end isn't nearly as important as the journey there.

In Titanic, you knew the boat would sink but you didn't know how Jack would steal Rose's jewels.

In The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, did you doubt for a moment that the King would return? Seeing Sam kill Frodo for the ring was the intrigue there.

In Pearl Harbor you knew Ben Affleck... wait, what was that movie about? Now I'm angry again that I wasted my time watching it.

So... what's the over/under on dead Bothans in Rogue One?

sorry, you lost me at "titanic";

how could any sane person..? :D

So, no Romeo and Juliet? No biopics, no historical dramas? No rewatching a movie?

Absolutely. Though typically the only time I KNOW the good guys win is when I see the same movie multiple times. I KNEW exactly how Episode 7 would end on my 2nd and 3rd time seeing it. But my 1st time i did NOT know that the good guys would win. Look at Empire Strikes Back - did you expect the good guys would win? Look at Pulp Fiction? Did you... wait who exactly WERE the good guys in that?

You never KNOW unless it's a pre-existing story from a book.

My belief is that Alan Trudek is playinng a CGI bothan, and he will narrowly escape death. "mebbie next time the empire builds an unstoppable superweapn, but not today."

It's a heist/spy/war film set in the Star Wars universe. What's not to like or get excited about?

Clearly you've not Sen the directors other movies.

And then a giant spear goes through his chest right?

We watched the prequels knowing how they'll end.

Gritty, heroes dying, Game of Thrones sort of stuff is my prediction. We will get lots of lovable characters ... and we will watch them die.

I quite liked 'Godzilla'. I've not seen 'Monsters' but it seems to have received a lot of praise.

Godzilla you mean the film that promised us Brian Cranston and Ken watanabi but instead gave us a bland family that was magically in the right place so he could cut away from the monsters to people we didn't care about every time there was a threat of action?

And monsters is criminally boring as it utterly fails to deliver any sodding aliens until the last five minutes of the film, instead we get two repugnant unlikable people wandering around the jungle for two hours.

Rogue ones not gonna be good.

It doesn't stop me from reading the 40k Horus Heresy novels. Those are a prequal, "how it all began" type of story and from the get go you know how it's gonna end: (Horus turns evil and in the end the emperor kills him in single combat, yadda yadda) But what's going on in between the start and the end that's what's interesting. (Especially once, several books in, they drop a few bombs regarding wich side some characters/legions are truely on!)

For all we know we might see some imperialist go "this death star is all a bit much" and decide to help the rebels. I wonder if we'll get that EU bit with IG-88 taking over the death star.

As the saying goes: It's not about the destination; It's about the journey.

The writers give us story, plot, and dialogue.

John Knoll the story writer and producer has never written a movie before. He's never produced a movie before. But he did the visual effects on a lot of movies known for their visual effects including the original star wars.

Chris Weitz is doing the screen play. He did Antz and Nutty Professor 2.

I'm not sure what to expect now.

If it's like the Radio Drama it seems everyone gets captured or dies after successfully stealing the plans and transmitting them to the Tantive IV.

But I'm sure we will see some cameos like Biggs and Porkins, maybe Wedge, Bail Organa. I would love to see Lord Tion, but that's a pipe dream.

Or Hamlet . ;) Just because everybody dies at the end doesn't mean it's bad.

#5000th post!

Which is why I knew that the good guys would win TFA. Just like I would say that in eps 8 there is a 90% + chance they won't win, or at least it will be a draw. I also knew that good guys wouldn't win in RotS.

I refer to myself as kind of a canon librarian in some ways, so in this case Rogue one interests me because I want to know the version of events that will be written into the historically significant capture of the DS plans.

It's it's badass and starwarsy tripply so.

In a situation like this, with the foreknowledge of the events surrounding the Death Star and the Battle Of Yavin pretty much worldwide knowledge, a prequel like Rogue One essentially becomes a character piece.

They introduce the team that recovers the Death Star plans, build up the camaraderie between them, build their relationships and dynamics, highlight their mission, and the odds they face... and then we wait to see who makes it, and who doesn't.
