Tournament Kits

By Funkleton, in X-Wing

I want that challenge coin....I dunno why, but I do.

Because it's awesome. Loved my LCG coin from 2013.

They didn't do challenge coins for the X-Wing 2015 store championships, did they?

...least, I don't recall seeing them...

I don't believe so.

I like that it's just the Imp logo as opposed to a ship. It makes me happy. Hoping the opposite side is the Rebel logo

It is double sided. I held it in my hand today.

Also good. Still much want.

I wil snap some pictures of it tomorrow during the event so you can see both sides.

We have a Winter '15 kit that we'll be using very very soon. I'm TOing for Gamer's Sanctuary in Flint. Our season was supposed to start on Sunday but it looks like we're in for some incredibly dangerous weather that night so I may postpone it a week (as loathe as I am to do something like that).

Winter kits with Vader, Gunner, Extra Munitions tokens and Falcon dice bags should be circulating now. They haven't announced Spring kits yet.

I'm sure I saw an announcement about the 2016 kits with the 3PO cards - but it seems to have disappeared.

I'm trying to get some info together for a SC I'm To-ing in Feb - was hoping to get some info from the store owner today but the distributor sent a tournament kit for the LCG by mistake

That's the 2016 Store Championship kit. 32 C-3PO alt arts, 8 blue acrylic range rulers, 4 X-wing themed challenge coins, plaque and Regionals bye for the winner.

Fixed that for you.

Really? I am going to an 8 player max event, lucky me I guess! (my fifth range ruler...)

I really hope you are outside the US. Cause limiting to 8 in the USA is a good way of never holding a store championship again.

It depends on the size of the store I guess, my FLGS is probably only going to have 20-24 because it's quite small and there simply isn't enough room for more players.

That sounds risky too. If your store can't support at least the amount of give away items, I don't believe it should be hosting.

8 maximum. That's crazy. We are expecting 30+ today. We rented extra space for the event.

It is the second one at that place I believe - the problem is that the store is freaking tiny. The store is on pretty good terms with the German distributor, though, they host most FFG community events at store level here. To be honest, even though the conditions are far from ideal, it would suck to lose them. The tournaments are run really well and smooth, the only limitation is space. I think the more stores are allowed to run community events like this the better, especially where the community isn't anywhere near as strong as it is overseas. We need those events.

I will also go to a 32 person store championship, but I have to travel there 1.5 hours by train, which isn't exactly cheap.

That's understandable, but, I know plenty of stores that are small and set up to allow it, or rent out space. If you have people show up and you turn them away, that hurts just as much, especially if the regular/locals pre register before hand taking all the spots.

Well then I'm glad you aren't the arbiter of who gets to host the event. Some stores are small and some of us don't have the option of travelling to attend larger events.

Yes, that is too harsh. I would like the option of smaller kits for those stores that can't afford to run a larger event.

That has never been an issue, since pretty much all tournaments for any tabletop system are preregistered only in Germany. This store allows people who didn't register to fill up spots, but usually no one would come unless they were sure about a spot for them.

Travelling has nothing to do with it though. Stores can usually rent out space and provide a larger playing area. Thus not cutting off your none traveling needs. I just don't find capping it before 32 is far. I know of a few people who have had this happen where they were turned away because the venue wasn't big enough or all the available slots pre registered for due to regulars taking them. So what happens then is the other handful of players that can't travel also can't play in a tournament they were excited for.

I'm not sad at all for people not being able to attend an event due to regulars taking up the spots. Where do you expect them to play?

I also find your comments about renting out space extremely naive, you have no idea what the prices are like around here, if anything is even available to rent.

No, I don't, but you are also misreading what I said. Never once did I say you shouldn't get it, I just know that it's risky to keep the count low for US based tournaments of the store championship level and higher. And you should always be welcoming to new players, some can't make the time to come to game nights but they support the store with in house purchases. They also are some of the ones that help continue the support for the company that supplies these tournaments. So I find your lack of concern naive if anything. :)

How is it "risky" to run tournaments for people that wouldn't otherwise be able to attend these events? Why should I be concerned that the slots get taken up by regulars? Again, where should they play?

I never brought up any of that, its risky when the distributor gets told not to allow kits to be given to said store, most of the time this is with stores selling the kits, but as this game grows more I could see it happening to limited tournament providers. You are arguing a completely different point, one that was never even mentioned.

Regulars should be able to play, no doubt about that, but I also know it to be unfair to the non regulars. I know a few people that buy a good deal of ships but can't make game nights, thus making them not "regulars" nor do they stay up to date with tournament registrations. So yes I know its only a few but that can sourer someone's perspective of the game and store when they find out that a store only had enough spots for the regular crowd and no one else. Or even when a regular can't attend because they heard the date later then the next guy. So again there is nothing wrong with running the events, but I am more worried that behavior like this could end up making said stores unable to gain a kit next time, which for someone like you would mean having to travel, and how strongly you feel about it, that not happening.

I see no evidence to suggest that smaller stores won't keep getting kits just because they can't fit 32 people into the building.

That's fine and dandy, but how many called and got told no because it was limited to 8?

A few, but the community is as small as the store and I'd rather have this than nothing for us. localy there is maybe 4-5 people playing regulary, 3-4 others have a few ships, but mainly play 40k.

Nor do I, but it could happen, and I don't think it helps foster a growing community.

A few, that alone is to many. I would think the organizer would try to expand, even if placing tables outside, if you don't help grow the community, how do you ever expect to have more regulars?

They simply can't afford to expand. The tournament is run on saturday during normal opening time. There are two guys working at it, for the tournaments they run the store together, usually they are alone.

Then possibly look to the player base for a TO, I know myself and a few others that are versed in tournaments do such for kits and tournaments. A single person would be all that is needed for up to 16 people.

In what way? It's a store championship, not a regional, how would removing a store from having a championship foster a growing community? In this case, that's 8 slots that wouldn't be available if they were denied a kit, those 8 slots aren't moving to another store, they'd just be gone.

I agree that it can be run better, I just don't see why it shouldn't be run at all.

Last year we also had 8 slots. Wanna know how many people registered? 7. Of which 6 showed up. Of which 3 played fat turrets, but that is another story.
