Target Locks are persistant until one of the following occurs:
Being able to hold a Lock on a ship when you can't shoot at it is one of the advantages of Target Lock over an offensive Focus.

...D'oh
I guess (3) shouldn't say different ship, since you can re-acquire a TL on the same ship.

You may NOT acquire a TL on a ship you already have a TL on.
You should find that in the rules and it is there to prevent potential abuses from a ship like Dutch who does other things when acquiring a TL. Now there are a number of way the game allows you to quickly reacquire a TL on a ship after using a TL but that is NOT the same as acquiring a TL on a ship you already have a TL on.
If your ship has a Fire Control System and you have a TL on the ship you shoot at you do NOT acquire a new TL on that ship automatically. You may spend your current TL on the attack you are making and at the end of the attack FCS would allow a TL to be reacquired but by that time the first TL is gone.

A ship can acquire a new target lock on a ship that it already has locked; the old target lock is removed.
They changed the answer about it in the FAQ as well.
Q: If a ship already has a target lock on an enemy ship, can the locking ship acquire a target lock again on the same enemy ship in order to trigger a game effect (such as “Dutch” Vander)?
A: Yes.
No longer true. Rules Reference, page 3, fourth bullet from the end of Acquire a Target Lock:

Well I'll be .....
Why the **** did they think they needed to go and change that? Are they trying to mess up those of us who have been have been with this game a long time but may not keep track of the little changes from the FAQ? Why wasn't there a big post about this change?
It is one thing when they finally come out with the rules on how something is supposed to work or when they fix something that is getting complained about a lot but who was having trouble with Target Locks and not being able to lock on a target you already have locked?

Redline+FCS. Not that it required this rules change as a fix, but it was a bit of a headache. It is one thing when they finally come out with the rules on how something is supposed to work or when they fix something that is getting complained about a lot but who was having trouble with Target Locks and not being able to lock on a target you already have locked?
I guess I can see that being a bit confusing although there I'd say Redline is a special exception. Without digging out the FAQ and looking at Redline in a builder I take it the "you may acquire a second target lock on that ship," means you get to hand a ship two TLs instead of just one when you acquire the first TL where I've assumed that is just the text that allows you to get that second TL.

Yeah, they did bury it in the corner with a "Do not disturb" sign.
