Explain reprogrammed skirmish mission to me

By kujoe1988, in Imperial Assault Rules Questions

I have read the mission multiple times and I don't quite under stand it. Do I put random mission tokens face down on the "a" spots. Then when I pick G up put my mission token down and that gives me 2 vp? Would love for some one to walk me through... The only skirmish mission I don't quite get.

You place neutral mission tokens where indicated. A player can interact with the tokens to switch them with a Rebel or Imperial token. (Whichever matches the side picked at the beginning of the game.) Then since the token is "retrieved" you place it under the figure that interacted with it. This figure then carries that token until it is defeated.

At the end of each round any tokens that show the symbol chosen at the beginning of the match earn you 2 VPs.

I'm sure I've missed something but that's the main idea.

oh I didn't realize people picked up the tokens. somehow i missed that part.

So: neutral mission tokens are on the board. People can retrieve them. if they do they change into an Empire or Rebel token, depending on which tokens were assigned to which player at the start. if you kill someone, they'll drop the token. You could then go and pick up the token someone dropped and switch it to your team.

I think that's all there is to it.

One other interesting thing about this mission is that each figure CAN carry multiple tokens since it does not specify otherwise. I've confirmed this with FFG.

So when a character carrying the token gets killed, does it change back to neutral? I had no idea that a figure could even carry the token. Seems like they didn't explain that very clearly if that's the case.

The mission doesn't say anything about them reverting, therefor they don't and you continue to accrue VPs while it sits there. But if an enemy subsequently "retrieve"s it, THEY re-reprogram it.

It should have been made more explicit. The key is in realizing that "retrieve" is a keyword for the game with a specific meaning, found on page 22 of the rules reference. Once you know that "Retrieve" is a term, you can look it up and everything makes a lot more sense, but if you don't realize that the whole mission is just kinda "huh?"

What did it for me was that I DID remember that "interact" was a specific action in the game and when I read the mission rules (and assumed that the tokens stayed put) I got confused as to why it didn't say to "interact" with it, so I looked up the term it DID use and suddenly it all fell into place.
