My repaint project

By Red 7, in X-Wing

So I have been looking around the forum and noticed that there are A LOT of fantastic painters on here!

I have been very inspired by all of these great works, and as such, have decided to give it a go myself.

I have really been enjoying painting them, and the results IMHO are pretty good.

First up is the man himself, Luke Skywalker piloting Red 5. There are SO many sources to use as reference material that I decided to go for a hybrid which incorporates the battle of Yavin references and my own creativity placing this Red 5 somewhere after the Yavin battle. This is why there are a lot of repair panels and battle damage added. I still have one more X-Wing to paint, but I am not sure which Red Sqaudron ship I am going to do...

Next up are the four Tie fighters that I got in the 2 Core sets that I bought.

For these guys, I repainted the "missed" grey areas, and darkened them up a bit with a wash.

I wanted to make them a little unique, so I added OSL to their ion thrusters, and changed the colors of their lasers to green.

Really nice repainted there; I like the glow on the X-Wing engines. What colours did you use for it?

Enjoying the green lasers too, it's something I did on my Armada TIEs for a bit of emphasis!

Thanks for the feedback.

For the X-Wing engines I first painted a progression from white to red (White, yellow, orange, red), and then made a very thin red wash to apply over everything.

Nicely done.

I do like the weathering on your XWing

Very nice.

All the best.

Barry.

Thanks Barry,

I was actually really surprised as to just how weathered the X-Wings are.

I need to decide which Red squadron members X-Wing to paint next...

I have decided to go with Luke's buddy Biggs Darklighter (aka Red 3 ) as my next X-Wing repaint.

Stay tuned...

That little bit of red on those TIEs makes a surprisingly big difference.

Good work!

Good work!

Thanks,

I took me a while to decide on what to do with the Tie engines.

I saw a lot of people painting the center ion screen as the engines which looked really cool, but I am glad that I went with the more cannon double ion thrusters.

Biggs Darlighter is coming along nicely, and I should have him done by the end of next week.

I think I would like to get a B Wing next. They look tlile they are cool models to paint AND they seem to be a pretty awesome rebel ship to play.

Biggs Darklighter is done:

Great stuff, really nice attention to detail and the 'feel' is spot on!

Great painting skills, nice to see some one remembers the candy stripes on Luke's X-wing. So many people forget

I'm not sure if everyone forgets the candy stripes. Speaking from my own experience, candy stripes can be rather tedious to get right so for my Luke X-wing I just didn't bother. Still, it's always nice to see those who makes the effort.

Thanks for the kind remarks!

I was struggling with the "feel" of the models.

I know that the X-Wings are supposed to look dirty and grimy,

but I wasn't sure if I was successful in making them look that way or if it just ended up looking like I was a messy painter! LOL :P

I think that for my next repaint I will save my pennies and buy either a rebel aces expansion, or a Force Awakens Core Set.

The B and A Wings are both favorites of mine :D

I would like to have a theme to my Rebel fleet, so I am going to continue on withe the Red Squadron for all of my X-Wings.

I am planning to use a little artistic licence though, and I was hoping for some feedback...

I am throwing around the idea of painting T-70s as my Red Squadron members... Thoughts?

I've not seen any Red Squadron T-70s, so for that reason alone I say go for it! It would also add a nice cohesiveness to the force as a whole.

As far as getting a dirty and grimy look, two tips that I've found instrumental; sponge weathering, particularly along the leading edges of ships, is a great way to simulate blaster marks and such, and using a pencil to draw on chips on large surfaces is super-easy too. Definitely worth looking into.

My vote goes to the Rebel Aces set, the A and B are really nice to both paint and play.

Here's a red squadron T70 I had a guy paint up for me, if you want some mild inspiration!

They do exist!

I just couldn't stop myself from adding blood stripes to my Ties.

Now I have the beginnings of my own 181st inspired Tie Wing. Perhaps the 179th

I decided to only have the stripe on the left hand side, and only on one side of the model.

My rationale for this is that it leaves room to distinguish veterans, and doesn't take away from the Aces like Soontir Fel

nice

Your Biggs is brilliant, puts mine to shame! Keep it up.

I am off to pick up a Rebel Aces expansion this afternoon.

I am really looking forward to painting them.

Wow!

What great models!

Yeah, they are, aren't they? Any plans to re-angle the B-wing at all? It's easy enough to lean the whole thing sideways a little, but with a little time you could cut and spin the cockpit and have it at all kinds of crazy angles.

Did you do any repainting on the TIEs other than the blood stripe? They look great either way.

I am for sure going to reposition the BWing.

I will get started on it next week.

I am also thinking hard about what to do with the A and B Wings in regards to repaints....
