Mentors

Should Mentors give a xp discount on Career Specs for everyone like they do on Force powers?

Basically, this is what holocrons are for, but it is not unreasonable to make a Mentor give such discount.

I was looking more for all specs not just force users

Well in real life terms, a mentor is someone who helps you improve certain skills, mostly skills around a knowledge. So in game terms he maybe could help scientists or mechanics, maybe politicos. If you want someone to help a soldier or similar, that is called an instructor, like a Drill instructor. Maybe it's like a chinese Sifu, who teaches you a martial art.

Anyway a mentor should not be able to branch out into EVERY discipline there is. It works for force sensitive characters, because he teaches ALL of them about the force, a singular study. I doubt, that the same person could help a Performer AND a Heavy.

Mentor is just a mechanic tied to a resource. The resource being a 5 xp discount on Force powers.

The discount is far from game breaking, so I am generally not very concerned with balancing it out against the non-Force users.

I certainly wouldn't offer a general discount on skills, that steps on the Holocron resource (which non-Force users can take advantage of, as long as a Force user is around to activate it).

Was looking more a like a Diplomat imparting his wisdom on a young inspiring senatorial intern thus granting a discount on a Spec he/she has to a PC looking to gain that Spec.

Works as a Drill Sargent/Jedi Master/Art Instructor etc.

Yeah why not go with several mentors/trainers/instructors?

Let me give an example that shows both how geeky and old I truly am:

Street Fighter the Storytelling Game had a mechanic called backgrounds. You could buy trainers, mentors, instructors and tutors with it (among other things).

  • A trainer helped you physically develop, like raising your physical attributes: strength, dexterity and stamina.
  • A mentor taught you social etiquette and behaviour and thus helped raising your social attributes charisma, manipulation and appearance
  • A tutor helped you with your mental abilities, raising mental attributes like perception, intelligence and wits
  • A instructor finally helped you raise a group of skills, you chose

Anyhow, you could buy more than one and even as a group together. So maybe you make some NPC chars, who represent the Mentor mechanic. Like an old mechanic who they regularily visit and who teaches the Technician of the group some new tricks.

And before anyone savvy in White Wolf Publishing says, that comes all from World of Darkness, to them I say:

I really can't stand vampires

That's definitely something outside of the "mentor" resource. But you could use that as a starting point.

Were it me, I would probably boil that mentor's service into a few skills and use the holocron resource as a basis (but for all party members). In your example, the diplomat would make Charm and Knowledge (Xenology) as career skills to her proteges.

In that case, I would model a mentor on a career, and its career skills are the ones he is giving a discount on.

Looking to stay away from skill discounts, don't see them as to hi.

was more looking at a 5xp (or progressive) discount on a new spec or something like that.

since it would be for all Career Specs I don't see it as unbalanced, but would like to get some input on it.

Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't having a mentor only give you a discount on the first talent in a force power tree?

Yes what I Meant was its not limited to Just Force powers or just one careers specs.

also what I was proposing would only give a discount for buy the Spec in the first place not for the Talents or Skills within the Spec.

i cant see a problem with the group having a Mentor for a Career, where buying specs in that career are 5xp (or even 10xp due to the lesser number of specs a character may have over force powers) cheaper. but there would need to be restrictions:

1. Only 1 Mentor at a time, not a different 1 for every character!

2. Only discount on the cost of purchasing the Specialisations of the 1 career, not talents/skills etc.

So a group that is playing as a group of Ace's that do other things as well (Rouge Squadron style) may have an ex Pilot trainer or commander that they meet up with regularly who provides this discount. Perhaps they are based on a Capital ship and its their commander who provides this benefit.

The only other method to use would be to have the Mentor remove the Out of Career penalty for that Career, esentialy making that career all Universal specs. this isnt ideal for those that wanted to start in that career, or for the purpose of using the Signature Abilities of that career.
