Bounty Hunter Rodeo - game idea

By heychadwick, in X-Wing

With the latest leaked info about 4 LOM, it had me thinking about something. What if there was a scenario that pitted the best Bounty Hunters in the Galaxy against each other to capture some of the toughest bounties?

Let's say that all the Bounty Hunters were hanging out in Mos Eisley and bragging about who was better. They decided to pool their resources to have a test as to who could get the highest bounty on some of the toughest opponents. They all work together to set an ambush that traps the highest bounties that the Empire has put out.

TARGETS:

Han Solo

Luke Skywalker

Dash Rendar

Tycho Celchu

Miranda Doni

Hera Syndulla

All targets are maxed out in a good, defensive manner. Assign points for each target based on how hard it is to kill them. Whomever gets the final kill gets the bounty. Use as many or as few of these as you want. Want more? Throw in Poe or whoever else you think would be good.

BOUNTY HUNTERS:

IG-88 A

IG-88 B

IG-88 C

IG-88 D

Boba Fett

Emon Azzameen

Zuckuss

Dengar

Bossk

Set a points limit for each ship build. IG-88 pilots can decide whom of the other IG-88's they want to share their ability. Decide at the beginning of the turn for that turn. There are more Bounty Hunters you can add, but I tried to stick to at least ones with titles. Throw in Kath Scarlet, Moralo Eval, or any of the other pilots you think are worth it.

RULES:

  • THERE ARE NO RULES!!!! This is a fight to see which Bounty Hunter can collect the most points by the end of the match. Even if IG-88's form an alliance, only one of them can win. You can kill other Bounty Hunters, but you don't get anything for it.
  • Well....one rule....Targets can't fly off the board or try to kill themselves on asteroids. If someone does happen to die by asteroid, why did they get there? If it was an Ion shot, then the person who ionized them gets it. Did they risk it and just die unlucky? Whomever had the last hit on them gets it.

BOARD SETUP:

You can do anything, but I happen to know my local game store has 4x4 game table tops with space scenes. I think a 4x4 table space works great! 3x3 might be a little small. Scatter asteroids and debris fields around the board. 4 of each? Set up by Game Master....or whomever is playing the Targets.

Targets can be run by one or as many as you want players. They will die, but they need to make it a challenge. Maybe give points to the Targets to see who is the last to die?

Interesting dynamics come to mind. High PS can work great to finish someone off...but could also work against you. Your high PS is the first to fire at someone...so they might use their defensive tokens against you or you only wound the target. That means someone with a lower PS might be able to finish off a target at the end of the game.

THINGS THAT NEED TO BE FLESHED OUT:

  • What should be the point loadout for the Bounty Hunters?
  • What should the Target builds be like? After that, what point values should they have each? Probably each one at a different point level so that you don't have ties if everyone kills just one.
  • Should the Bounty Hunters have a pre-built list? If so, what should they be? Or...have a pre-built ship, but let the player change it if they want based on their preferences. Only 1 unique per game, so no double Slave 1.

What do people think? Who would you want to play as?

This is a really cool idea. I think I would go Bossk.

I'd really want to try out Zuckuss, but with that many enemies on the board, Boba Fett might be a good choice.

Me like.

Sounds fun. Gimme Dengar.

I think the best buildout for a Luke would be:

Luke Skywalker

-Lone Wolf

-R2-D2

-Shield Upgrade

Not sure what the best Falcon loadout would be.

I like it. I think for the setup phase, you should do a blind deployment. Get one of the presentation stands (or a large cardboard box) and put it in the middle of the field where the asteroids have been deployed and setup both the targets and the bounty hunters so no one knows where the others are so it is a random assignment. The bounty hunters still setup in PS order.

Not sure what the best Falcon loadout would be.

I'd be tempted to go slightly thematic:

Han Solo

-C-3PO

-Chewbacca

Do the targets attack?

I'm thinking to max out EVERYTHING on these ships. I mean, why not throw on an Assault Missile, right? What else can we put on that sucker?

Do the targets attack?

Yes, and with that in mind, I did forget to say we should bulk out all the ships. I say we can even give Luke a Torpedo!

@Grayfax: I almost think the GM pre-picks some start points it's up some method to pick who gets what spot. Targets get put in the middle, I'd say.

Oh... well, nothing like sitting ducks scrambling to get out of the way... heh heh... that works too!

Trapped, but no where to run! I think it could be really fun for the Target players, too. They will most likely die, but will have to play a very good game to make it difficult. I am not that good with the Rebel players to really want to be one.

EDIT You can make it a lot more interesting for the target players as well by establishing a winner among them, the one surviving the longest time. Some system where they get points for every round survived, corrected for hit points and regeneration systems (so that large ships and R2D2/C3PO etc carriers not have an advantage versus the other targets).

So 2 winners. Gonna be a lot fun with the right players.

Great idea. Sounds like a fun fur ball event.

I had a somewhat similar concept where there is a tournament (likely on Vassal) to see which Bounty Hunter is the best. Make 50 point list with one hunter and players face off in normal tournament fashion

You could use 50pts for rodeo too.

I think the Mist Hunter pilots get and extra modification slot usable only for hull/shield upgrade or stealth device. This would make 50pts more feasible for that ship.

One of the podcast crews could host.

I was thinking it could be a cool event at the NOVA open. I should send them the link to this thread.

Yeah.....you normally don't put too much extra stuff on these ships due to points restrictions, but why not go crazy? Miranda would be nasty to rush up to as she can do some damage to people. It would be cool to see if the Bounty Hunters turn on each other, as well. It might take some tweaking to make sure the Hunted weren't too powerful. I would probably gear them more towards defense with upgrades and EPTs.

You can kill other Bounty Hunters, but you don't get anything for it.

I like the idea overall. But, this goes against The Bounty Hunter Code ;)

It may be unnecessary complication, but if someone wants to be a little more thematic, I'd offer the following:

By Code, Bounty Hunters cannot interfere with or kill another hunter. If a Bounty Hunter kills (or even shoots at) another hunter, he is no longer a hunter and instead counts as an acquisition (i.e., the hunted). For the purpose of scoring, he retains the points acquired thus far, but any hunter killing the new acquisition will gain points for his take down just as they would for any other acquisition.

OK....if you want to go that route, we can. I'd say that anyone who opens fires is no longer bound by the code (is a free target), but doesn't offer up any points when killed.

I still kind of like the idea of the Scum players getting nasty with each other. Maybe that code would help and it would only be used to prevent someone else from scoring a winning point or something.

How about if you kill another hunter, they steal half of your points as "restitution?"

I kind of want the Bounty Hunters to take pot shots at each other here and there. Maybe they don't kill another guy, but maybe weaken them so that the Rebels kill them?

OK....so they have shown Dengar. I've talked to a few local guys and I really want to do this soon. The question comes in with......how many points do I give each Bounty Hunter?

My biggest concern is that some guys can't actually hit a certain point if they max out on everything while others might not be that good if they don't have too many points. Let me look at Zuckass. If I take the most expensive of every single Upgrade for him, he comes out at 49 points. Now, that's not the best build, but only the most expensive. So, it would probably be less. So....this makes me think 45 points.

IG-88 B would only have enough for Autothrusters and HLC. Then again....that might be just OK as it is there. That's still a pretty tough ship in this environment. He can always go for a lower grade cannon for other toys, or even just stay as that. Sure, not the most optimal build, but anything more would just be impossible for some ships to even spend.

DOES 45 POINTS SOUND REASONABLE ENOUGH? If not, please convince me otherwise.

EDIT: Oh, this scenario might be the perfect time to use Adaptability if it lets you change each round. 0 pts and the ability to change your PS to fire or move before or after someone else.

45 points isn't enough to get Dengar in the (titled) Punishing One with any other upgrades except 0 cost ones, so no, not enough.

Then what do you do for the Mist Hunter? Give him two Modifications? Or just say that he's screwed?

-Bounty Hunters may only target other bounty hunters when they are not in the arc of any other BH on the board.

I.e. It has to be unseen.

-if a BH's attack would result in another BH being destroyed, instead of destroying that ship, leave it with face down damage cards to the point where it has 1 remaining hull.

I admit that I want to allow them to fire at each other. If one kills another, so be it. It's meant to be fun and cut throat. Will people play nice with each other or will they fire on each other, as well? If one does it, will that one be focused out by the others or will it turn into a free for all?

Sounds like fun. To address the points issue, what if the following was applied?

Each player starts with a naked Z-95. One of the following happens.

1. All upgrade cards are shuffled and a random card is placed under opponent's card. If you destroy a ship you get the upgrade representing the bounty). it might be good or bad. Ships and upgrades can be sold for their point value and additional ships can be purchased.

2. 20% of points accumulated in a game (representing the bounty) may be put towards upgrades or new ships of the player's choosing.

Players may purchase as many or few ships as they like.

Regardless of ship, fellow bounty hunters may attack each other down to 2 hull points. At this stage, any damage or other effect resulting from the attack will not be applied.
