IG 88B and native gunner

By Stoneface, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Tonight I ran IG88B for the second or third time since they were released and a question came up. If I have a target lock on an enemy ship, can I roll an attack, miss, not use the TL, gunner kicks in and use the TL for the gunner reroll?

Also, since his card doesn't specify a primary weapon for the first attack, can I use the cannon upgrade twice?

Normally I would say yes to both questions but my record of correct interpretations is pretty bad. If this has been asked before I apologise. I'm not real fond of this search engine.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Yes, you can choose to not use the TL in order to trigger IG-88's ability, and use your target lock for the second attack if you wish. It's not compulsory to use a target lock during an attack, and because they don't get removed at the end of the round, you can hold a target lock for any number of rounds until you need to use it.

You can use a cannon or primary for the first attack, and if that attack doesn't hit, you must use a cannon for the second attack.

The ability to equip two cannons still give you plenty of scope, though.

****! I got one right! Thanks for the quick response.

Ran IG88B and four Binayre Pirates vs 2 Phantoms and 2 Ties and had the second worst game I ever played. On top of frigid dice, anticipating my opponent's moves was a bust. It was like he was reading my mind. Dismal play. The only bright spot was one shotting one of his cloaked Phantoms. Three hits and a crit vs one evade on 4 greens. Crit was a DH.
