Sunder the armor with Cortosis

By Arrakus, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Was just reading over the latest Q&A posted on FFG developer thread, and saw the response regarding sundering armor & Cortosis. I remember a post a few months back that generated some discussion so I thought I would call this one out.

Question:

Hi, I have a question concerning the Cortosis quality in the Star Wars RPG line. It states that weapons become immune to Sunder whereas armour becomes immune to Pierce and Breach. So, can you still Sunder an armour with the Cortosis quality? Cheers!

Answer:

Rules as written, that is correct. You can Sunder the armor with Cortosis.

Do you read this as if you have a weapon with the Cortosis quality, then yes, you can sunder armor?

Or does not mean that you can sunder a piece of armor that has the Cortosis quality in it?

Or does it mean both?!

Thoughts?

If the weapon has sunder and the armor has cortosis, the armor can be sundered is my reading of it.

Yup, Cortosis weapons and cortosis armour have two different headings. Armour isn't resistant to shunder, but weapons are. Just naturally the armour is more easily damaged as it has to protect you.

If the weapon has sunder and the armor has cortosis, the armor can be sundered is my reading of it.

This is how I read that, also. No where does it state that adding cortosis to a weapon gives it the sunder property.

Ok, except i don't recall seeing the Cortosis attechment for weapons, unless you are only talking about the weapons that are Cortosis by design (which is just silliness IMHO, there should be an attachment for weapons as well as armor, but that's another topic)

Wow rarely do we see a bad or inconsistent dev answer. As per the rules Sunder allows you to target only wielded items such as shields, weapons, or item on a belt. Sunder does not let you shred someone's armor. Armor is worn and not wielded. This is why the armor cortosis quality doesn't mention it. Why mention something that can't be targeted by the Sunder Quality.

So the dev is wrong A. No you can't sunder armor and therefore B. No you cannot Sunder cortosis armor. See EOTE page 157

In a non raw sense for the purposes of narritive play I would allow a triumph on an attack roll open up a small hole in the armor, which others could aim at taking the appropriate penalty to bypass all the protection the armor gives.

I would think in the rare case with 2 triumph I would add in that the armor was damaged to minor and the penalty to aim would be reduced from 2 setback to 1.

If someone rolls 3 triumph and all they want to do is break someone's armor sure I'd let it go because man 3 triumph is awesome.

Imagine how even more useless armor would be if anyone with a sunder quality could spend 3 advantage and fully destroy your armor. Its also completely un starwars your sunder weapon is not a sarlac pit

Agreed, first time I've looked at a dev call and questioned it.. .Sunder allows you to target only wielded items such as shields, weapons, or item on a belt... sundering armor opens up a bag of hurt I don't want to deal with.
