Dash 'n' Jan

By namdoolb, in X-Wing Squad Lists

It's very possible that this may be old news, but after some judicious acquisition of ships over the Christmas period my collection has reached the position where this list feels viable, and I'm actually quite excited to try it out.

Jan Ors (25)

Moldy Crow (3)

Twin Laser Turret (6)

Engine Upgrade (4)

Nien Numb (1)

Cool Hand (1)

(40)

Dash Rendar (36)

Outrider (5)

Heavy laser Cannon (7)

Engine Upgrade (4)

Push the limit (3)

Gunner (5)

(60)

((100))

Yes, it's a very single-minded list :) The plan is to kite the opponent to death.

Nien Numb, plus the engine upgrade should enable Jan to keep up with Dash quite well, and should allow her to pump out her ability on most turns, turning Dash's HLC into a killing machine.

Obviously the list depends on my ability to keep the enemy at range 3, which ironically means the squad probably depends more than anything else on my ability to pilot it. I should be ably to manage a test game or two later in the week and we'll see if I'm up to the task.

In the meantime, any feedback/advice is more than welcome.

As to what ships/cards I have;

I've got at least one of most of the Rebel ships now, but no scum and no empire.

In terms of Rebel stuff I'm only really missing (unless I've forgotten something) the original Core set, and the Ghost, oh and Rebel Aces, (which my local shop is trying to get in for me. (I'd rather give my money to them than go online.))

Oh, and I don't have any of the epic ships. (probably won't be getting them either...)

Looks pretty fun. The only red flag is Jan at 40 points is a juicy fat hawk waiting to be hunted. With engine upgrade and Nien Nunb, you do have chances to keep her out of reach for a while though. Also not sure you're gonna need gunner with a 5 dice HLC, especially firing after Jan's TLT stripping tokens and the like. Also Cool hand is nifty for one time but I think Wired will be more beneficial even if it isn't helping on offense.

I was thinking about Wired, but if I get the chance to cache up a couple of focus tokens with the crow then Wired becomes substantially less useful. It's a quick switch though, I'll definitely try it both ways if I get chance.

Gunner is nice for insurance, but I did think it might be a little overkill. Not sure if I have much better in the way of options until I get my hands on Rebel aces and I can put Katarn in there instead. I did hover on Chewie momentarily, but since Dash probably won't be the primary target it felt like a waste, I also considered Mercenary Copilot, but that didn't seem like it would have a huge effect.

Ofc both of those options involve taking an initiative bid, which isn't a bad thing....

Gunner don't work as long as Dash is equipped with the Outrider title: your primary is disabled so no Gunner's second attack.

Well, that solves that conundrum then... Merc Copilot it is then until I can get my hands on Katarn.

Also strange though that Gunner is in the YT-2400 pack, why package him with a ship that can't doesn't really work properly with his ability?

Yeah with moldy crow, wired isn't as useful. But you might be able to drop that on her, and gunner from dash and you're almost able to slide a z95 in there or just different upgrades. I'm not sure moldy crow is worth it without rec spec unless you super slow play it.

Well, if you are a rebel only player, its nice to know that a ship in your faction has that card (prior to YT-2400, rebel only players would have to buy a Firespray to get it). Also, you don't HAVE to run outrider on your YT-2400...

That's a maybe... By my calculations I'd have to lose Engine upgrade & the crew upgrade off Dash, and the Crow title off Jan... Which would get me a bandit sq pilot.

I'll have to think about that one, Jan isn't losing out very much, but Dash is taking a bit of a mobility hit. is that worth it to get a Z in there?

I know it's good for blocking, but it'll likely have an extremely short lifespan, and I'm not sure if it's going to bring much EV to the table.

How about Predator instead of your EPT, and recon specialist on dash so when you do have to focus instead of boost barrel roll you basically have 3 actions. And predator on Jan will save you tokens to use on defense or let her use engine upgrade without sacrificing offense. I've personally used this set up and it's a ton of fun to fly. But beware, jan becomes public enemy #1 so fly casual and be careful

I really like this, seems fragile though. Still, I might try it myself.

No, a lone z-95 does nothing for a list like this. Two or three and they can do something positive, but one by itself? Despite being called a 'filler' ship, I find the lowly z-95 (and academy TIE) to be of very questionable value to a list when all you have is one.

Well, I managed to take it for a test flight.

My opponent was also experimenting with a list, and I don't think his experiment went so well.

He had a reasonably well decked out shuttle (don't remember the exact upgrades) and 3 fo tie's, shuttle was ps8, tie's were 4,7 and 4(12). He'd ptl'd two of them, and the third had the tech upgrade from the TFA core set (if I can only remember the name of it).

I realise that isn't exactly a top notch list, but it went pretty well. I was able to plot a circuit round the edge of the table and keep the ties at arms length quite easily. The shuttle (despite having the last move) went the whole game without getting a firing solution on anything. (I think he's sworn off the shuttle for life now.)

Dash and Jan both lost their shields, but didn't take any hull damage (I was able to keep dash inbetween Jan & the enemy most of the time). The 3 ties were all destroyed, he conceded when it came down to 2 vs the shuttle.

Thoughts so far:

Quite happy with the list, will be switching cool hand out for Wired. Might have tried predator (except I don't actually have a copy).

Recon specialist seems like a good call for Dash, since merc copilot didn't do very much (although it will probably be superceeded by Kyle katarn pending my purchase of rebel aces).

Moldy crow actually paid off, although that may be because I was a bit too cautious with the range, and it took a couple of turns longer than it should have for the shooting to start.

I'll have to think about ptl on dash though; pushing really cuts down on his ability to move on the next turn. It may be that I can find a better ept for him.

Overall quite happy with the squad. Might need a couple more games against different squads before I grant it the full seal of approval though.

Sounds like a good report on your match!

You say it took to long to engage though? I say it you have Moldy Crow there's no such thing as "too long to engage" that's how I want my Moldy Crow games to go.

And a huge suggestion for your Dash crew (as long as you're already waiting for ships) is wait for the Ghost pack to come out. Kanan Jarrus crew will allow Dash to clear stress at any speed!

Yeah, true :)

However, if it were a timed match (this wasn't) I'd want to make sure I had enough engagement time to kill their stuff.

I'll still be getting rebel aces; I don't just want it for this list, the stuff in there will still get plenty of use regardless.

But I will keep an eye out for the ghost and watch the prices. I wasn't originally planning to get one, but I may have to think about it now.

Yep, I might actually enjoy super Dash if he could do more than 4 maneuvers. As it is, I run Leebo instead of Dash to save a couple points for something else. PS7 isn't good enough for me to confidently Arc dodge when I'm stuck with greens moves.
