Chewie and the Pocket Rockets

By Karhedron, in X-Wing Squad Lists

This is an idea I have been toying with for a 100 point list. I really like the Falcon for durability and turreting but I want to run a 4-ship squadron with some decent damage output. Using Headhunters with missiles as backup achieves this to some extent.

Chewie in Falcon, C-3PO, Predator, Millennium Falcon 49 points

Z-95 Bandit Squadron Pilot with Assault Missile 17 points

Z-95 Tala Squadron Pilot with Concussion Missile 17 points

Z-95 Tala Squadron Pilot with Concussion Missile 17 points

The idea here is pretty simple. The headhunters use their missiles as an opening salvo on turn 1 or 2 that should be enough to destroy a smaller ship or strip the shields from a larger one. Then they close to dogfighting range and get stuck in. Chewie does his usual trick of being very hard to take down and covering rear arcs with his turret. Predator boosts his offensive output a bit.

One option is to trim a Tala down to a Bandit and buy thread-tracers for the Falcon. This will make a Turn 1 salvo much easier to pull off with the low priority Z-95s (as it stands there is a good risk of them failing to target lock on turn 1 as their targets will probably not have moved yet and still be outside Range 3) and will let them Focus for better damage output. Downside of this is that they all have to target the same ship. It looks good on paper with 4 ships, 25 hit points and decent firepower. Maneuverability is limited but the 360-degree shooting from the Falcon will mitigate this to some extent.

you could drop the assault missiles on the bandit to concussion like the others, then you could make the bandit a Tala too. Doing that makes the first round of shooting easier for the Tala's against other PS2 swarms.

However elusive aces won't have any trouble staying out of harms way with decent repositioning abilities. they definitely aren't going to joust you with the z's load-out. If you're worried about being dodged around then you could always lose the missiles for enough points to buy another Tala.

Yes, I think you are right. Talas with Concussion missiles are going to stand better odds of getting a lock on turn 1.

I like the idea of Thread tracers on the Falcon and possibly Homing missiles for slightly more reliable shooting but I cannot think of anything to drop for the couple of extra points it would take. Also the problem with Thread Tracers is Chewie needs to spend a turn focusing when he really wants to be evading. Also if the tracer misses then the headhunters are a little screwed.

I would love to throw Guidance Chips on the Headhunters but the cards are not out yet. :(
